Chapter 4337
When walking into the guest room, Clark looked up and examined it. This was definitely the most luxurious room he had ever stayed in, bar none. Even the star-rated hotels he stayed in when traveling on official business weren't this beautiful. He felt his vocabulary was somewhat lacking. He could only say that he now truly believed the window frame in Bruce's study came from a 16th-century French castle.
After sending him to the guest room, Bruce didn't say much and turned to leave. Clark sat on the edge of the bed, tidying up his luggage, not forgetting to call his friends and family to report that he was safe.
Clark wasn't very worried about their safety. He didn't need to worry about Diana; those people from A. R. G. U. S. couldn't possibly threaten her. Lois was currently in the limelight, and if Amanda had even a bit of brain, she wouldn't touch such a well-known reporter. Martha was the most vulnerable one, but Bruce had already sent people to protect her before.
Therefore, after arriving at the manor, Clark set his mind at ease and prepared to get some good rest first. After washing up, he lay on the bed, looking at the ceiling carved with exquisite patterns, and couldn't help but feel a bit emotional.
If the version of himself that had just entered the Fighting Realm had met a future version of himself that had traveled back and told him, "One day you will live in Batman's house," that version of himself would definitely have punched him to see who was impersonating him.
The development of events was truly too far beyond expectations. He was now actually lying in a guest room in Bruce Wei En's house and planning to just get a good night's sleep like this. It was truly crazy.
Accompanied by such thoughts, sleepiness gradually crept in, and Clark slowly drifted into dreamland. The next morning, he was awakened by the ringing of his phone. He squinted his eyes, fumbled to open the phone, and after bringing it to his ear, was startled by the cold touch.
"Hello?" Clark turned over and forced his eyes open. But upon hearing the voice on the other end, he was immediately startled awake.
"It's me, Mr. Kent. Do you know a woman named Amanda Waller? Yesterday, she stormed into my laboratory and claimed she wanted to arrest me on charges of illegal human experimentation..."
The person calling Clark was none other than the expert who was conducting desensitization experiments on him. Clark almost jumped out of bed. He said: "She went to find you?! That damn lunatic!"
"Don't be anxious," Clark started changing his clothes and then said, "I'll rush over there right now and guarantee she won't hurt you..."
"No, the reason I called you is so that you absolutely must not come over. She came to find me just to force you to show yourself..."
"But," Clark's movements paused for a moment, and then he said, "if I don't go, what if they really arrest you?"
"Then let her arrest me; sue me if she wants."
"No," Clark said immediately, "once the charges are established, you might have to go to jail."
"She wants to accuse me on charges of illegal human experimentation, but all the experiments I've done recently have revolved around you—are you human?"
"Uh..."
Clark was indeed stumped by the question. He thought about it, and the expert's words also made sense. Now that his background had been made public, everyone knew he wasn't human. Therefore, the expert conducting desensitization training on him couldn't be accused of illegal human experimentation.
They were just conducting experiments on an alien; regardless of whether the alien cooperated or not, it didn't involve human experimental ethics. So, charges like human experimentation couldn't be successfully brought. As for the rest, it would depend on how capable this Amanda Waller was.
However, just being able to break into the laboratory proved she was indeed somewhat capable. You have to know, the military had been forced to the point of announcing his identity and still hadn't broken into that laboratory; although Officer Jones had exerted influence, it also proved the military wasn't as omnipotent as he had imagined. And this inexplicable A. R. G. U. S. was actually able to do it, which meant she couldn't be underestimated.
Having figured this out, Clark no longer had the heart to rest. He hurriedly climbed out of bed, preparing to resolve this trouble. He picked up his things, ready to go to the A. R. G. U. S. base to demand an explanation from Amanda Waller. But just as he was about to leave, he stopped again.
Clark thought it over and felt he couldn't just rush over like this. After all, the other party had long since exposed their base location but still dared to do these things to him, which meant they weren't afraid of super-powered individuals raiding their base at all.
In the past, both the federal government and the military had been wary of the power levels of super-powered individuals. But this organization specifically managing super-powered individuals seemed fearless in this regard; perhaps they really had some tricks up their sleeves?
If that were really the case, they must have set an ambush at the base long ago. If he just ran over there blindly, he would be walking right into a trap. He couldn't do such a stupid thing.
So, he stopped his movements, sat back down on the edge of the bed, and began to think. A. R. G. U. S. should be a secret organization, which meant the public didn't know of their existence. Under these circumstances, public opinion warfare was useless against them.
Clark couldn't expose their existence because that might instead cause him to be charged with leaking state secrets or endangering national security, which would play right into the enemy's hands.
If he couldn't expose the other party's existence, he couldn't use tactics like public opinion warfare. Organizations like the federal government or the military mostly still cared about their reputation; even if it was just to win votes, they didn't want to cause scandals. Exposing them through public opinion could make them restrain themselves slightly. But this trick was useless against an organization like A. R. G. U. S.; they didn't care whether they were popular or not.
Clark increasingly felt that this matter was very tricky. Among the various crises he had faced in the past, there really hadn't been such an omnipresent, extremely difficult-to-deal-with intelligence organization. These people had few weaknesses, but they could always irritate him, making everything in his life go wrong until he yielded.
But Clark would absolutely never yield. Such things happen once and they will happen again; today they can use this method to force him to join, tomorrow will they use this method to make him kill? Judging by the character of such an organization, it wasn't impossible.
Moreover, being coerced by others itself leaves behind a handle. Once people think you are someone who will compromise, then every time someone needs to be made to compromise, you will be the first one they think of, and then you can only be forced to endure again and again.
Clark himself was a very tough person; even if it was just to win this argument, he would absolutely never compromise with A. R. G. U. S.
But now he also understood that getting angry was useless. Not compromising was the result, but he also absolutely couldn't pay such a huge price just to not compromise, letting that group of people harass him for a lifetime. He had to have a way to solve the problem once and for all.
Clark thought left and right there, thinking for a moment about the Fighting Realm matter, and then thinking about the case of Martha being kidnapped. Bruce, Diana, Lois, and even Schiller—the actions taken by these smart people when dealing with trouble kept flashing through his mind.
Clark vaguely felt that he seemed to have grasped a bit of the way, so he followed this line of thought.
What is the best way to deal with an enemy you cannot confront head-on?
Clark thought that since he couldn't do anything about this A. R. G. U. S., then surely someone else had a way. As long as they could deal with A. R. G. U. S., it didn't matter whether he was the one who took action, as long as the result was good.
First, he had to determine who could deal with A. R. G. U. S. There were actually many candidates; it could be said that all the friends he knew could do it. However, Clark wouldn't choose them. He didn't want to use his friends, nor did he want to add more trouble to them. Even if he needed their help, he would say so directly, rather than playing little tricks behind their backs.
Conversely, the only ones he was willing to use were his enemies. And among his enemies, both the military and the federal government could actually deal with A. R. G. U. S. But Clark estimated that it would be somewhat difficult to incite these two parties to deal with A. R. G. U. S.
He had great self-awareness, knowing he didn't have the brains to maneuver among a group of seasoned officers and politicians, not causing trouble for himself while skillfully using them to deal with the people he wanted them to deal with. If he had that ability, A. R. G. U. S. wouldn't even be worthy of being his opponent; he would have cleaned them up easily.
Thinking about it, Clark felt he still shouldn't overestimate his abilities. He likely had no way to manipulate other forces. This required not only wisdom but also a certain talent; he really couldn't do it.
Then the best method was for the target he found to already have a conflict with A. R. G. U. S., and then the two of them could cooperate. The enemy of my enemy is my friend; that is exactly it.
But who would have a grudge against A. R. G. U. S.?
Clark had too little information; waiting here wouldn't yield any more. Clark decided to go investigate. And this time he didn't bring Kryptonite; to deal with this cunning organization, he had to be extremely cautious.
Clark had already discovered that after a period of desensitization training, not only did he really not have such a strong reaction to this stuff, but perhaps because of long-term weight-bearing, his abilities had really increased. Take super-senses, for example; now, as long as he concentrated his attention, the range he could perceive was more than double what it was before. The current Clark, if he tried hard, could even hear the wind on Mars.
He knew A. R. G. U. S. had been monitoring super-powered individuals on Earth, which certainly included himself. So, to ensure his investigation wouldn't be discovered by the other party, he decided not to monitor from Earth, but to fly directly to the Moon.
He squatted on the Moon; the other party couldn't possibly throw a rocket up there to watch him, right? As long as he was far enough away, the other party's information would be one-way transparent to him, and being a bit further away also made it easier for him to oversee the overall situation and monitor the movements of all parties.
No sooner said than done. Clark took some random things, mainly water and food, and incidentally snatched a very comfortable recliner from Wei En Manor, flew out of the Earth's atmosphere, rushed upwards all the way, and not long after, landed on the lunar surface.
There were actually quite a few lunar rovers launched by humans on the Moon, but the Moon wasn't small, and it wasn't that easy to run into technological equipment. At least when Clark landed, he didn't see any traces of humans; everything here was very primitive and looked very desolate.
Fortunately, the beautiful Mother Earth was spinning quietly in the distance. Clark put his things on the ground, set up the recliner, and prepared to start monitoring.
However, the Moon is a low-gravity environment, and this recliner wasn't designed for such an environment, so it was a bit unstable. Clark had no choice but to fly back to Earth, get some nails or something, and nail the chair to the lunar surface before he could lie down comfortably.
After lying there for a while, he felt uncomfortable again. The recliner was comfortable enough, but not as comfortable as the one he lay on at Wei En Manor. Looking down, it turned out he hadn't brought the throw pillow. Clark flew back to Wei En Manor again and brought a throw pillow over.
