Chapter 4613: The Day of White (79)
"Shh!" Schiller gestured to the people behind him.
Strange looked at him in disbelief: "I thought we were here to stop them."
"Yes, but if you rush over now, it might be counterproductive." Schiller held him back.
"You at least owe me a recap," Strange couldn't help but say. "What is that pendant? Why is Lucifer angry?"
Schiller paused, glanced at Charles, and then said: "Please send the background story to him, Professor."
"Should I know?" Charles was also a bit confused.
"Come to the High Tower. I'll send it to you."
Soon, both Charles and Strange fell into deep thought. And the Batmen obviously didn't need such a complicated method.
"Do you remember?" the Main Universe Batman said to Arkham Batman in the mental realm.
"What?"
"Mephisto," Main Universe Batman said. "He seems to have told us this story."
"Are you talking about something like a body double? What was it he said?"
Now. Beside the Source Wall. The Multiverse Justice League stood to the left of the "tanghulu" (skewered planets), all looking confusedly at Lucifer and Anatoly. The Marvel personnel brought by Schiller stood to the right of the skewered planets, whispering the background story to each other.
"I'll go report that we're safe first," Main Universe Batman said. "By the way, Professor, send me a copy of the background story too."
Soon. The Multiverse Justice League also fell into deep thought.
Facts proved that when people read gossip, their brains turn incredibly fast. Anatoly and Lucifer hadn't even said two sentences before both sides of the multiverse had basically swallowed the huge melon between them whole. Thus, the situation began to become subtle.
Lucifer seemed to be lost in his own emotions and had no time to read others' minds. So much so that now, with two multiverses combined, he was the only one who hadn't recognized Anatoly.
"This is the downside of arrogance," Main Universe Batman commented. "He doesn't care about our thoughts, so he can't obtain information from them either."
"I actually think this is a private matter between the two of them, and we shouldn't interfere," Main Universe Wonder Woman said. "He might not necessarily be willing to be watched by so many people. If he gets angry, we'll all be in trouble."
"Is that the point?" Main Universe Superman said. "Us watching the show is definitely not the thing that would make him angriest right now. If Batman had faked his death for so long without me knowing, and then came back using a fake identity, I would definitely be furious."
"Looking at it this way, Watson is truly gentle," Charles said in a low voice. "I remember when he saw Sherlock Holmes return, he was so excited he fainted, right?"
"If only they could actually faint," Schiller sighed, trying to ignore his boiling brain. "I'd be fine with either one of them fainting."
"Not very optimistic," Strange shook his head and said. "I think we should still prepare to fight the War of the Fallen Angels."
"Are you talking about this?" The First Lantern reached out and took the pendant down. "I won this from someone while drinking."
He lightly bit the pronunciation of the word "someone," making it sound slightly heavier. But Lucifer was still immersed in his own thoughts, recalling the situation that day.
"What is this?"
"Nothing," Lucifer took a deep breath and said. "Did Constantine give it to you?"
"Yes. He told me that it contains the aura of Satan's anger and can repel angels. The fact that this thing appeared on me seems to be outside your expectations, Mr. Satan. Did he steal it?"
"No," Lucifer gritted his teeth and said. "It might have been left behind with him."
"Oh, so that's how it is. This thing is actually useless to me," the First Lantern handed it over. "Help me return it to its owner."
Lucifer finally realized that he seemed to have lost his composure. Even at his lowest point, he was still the Lord of Hell; running up to someone else to demand something like this was really too undignified.
Not to mention, people from both multiverses were watching. If he just took it like this, it would become a literal case of highway robbery.
Although the First Lantern said this thing was useless to him, it sounded completely like an excuse. It was like saying, "Anyway, I can't beat you, so if you want it, I can only give it to you."
But unfortunately, Lucifer couldn't find any suitable reason. He had already remembered that it seemed he was drunk and broke his wine glass. Although he had picked up all the fragments, one was missing at the end; it was possible he hadn't picked them up cleanly, rather than Constantine stealing it. He still disdained to do things like wronging people.
Since it was something he had dropped himself, and Constantine had picked it up and given it to someone else, his angry questioning seemed too aggressive and truly lacked grace.
Lucifer took a deep breath and said: "No. You keep it."
"Then can you tell me what this thing is? After all, Constantine isn't always that reliable. Is he?"
Did he tell you what this is? Lucifer just subconsciously looked up, or rather, out of politeness, looked into the other person's eyes while speaking. But when he saw those eyes, he felt something was wrong. This strange feeling lingered in his heart, but it was a thousand threads, and he couldn't grasp that fleeting inspiration.
"A fragment of Satan's wine glass," the First Lantern said. "Forgive me for being a bit curious, I really can't imagine what kind of situation would make Satan break his own wine glass. Did angels invade Hell?"
"How dare you think that?" Lucifer's expression turned cold. "Am I the kind of person who would be so scared by an angel invasion of Hell that I'd throw away my glass?!"
"I don't know," the First Lantern shook his head and said. "It looks like you should cherish this glass quite a bit, otherwise you wouldn't be so angry. I really can't imagine what situation would make you break it."
"I was drunk," Lucifer said.
"Is that so? I think alcohol is just a catalyst and can never cause the thought itself. Since this thing makes you unhappy in my hands, I'll return it to you. I don't want to get into trouble, Lord Satan."
The First Lantern threw the pendant in his hand directly out. Lucifer's eyes widened, he caught it, and then stared coldly at the First Lantern: "What you're doing doesn't look like you don't want to get into trouble. Are you trying to use me to establish your authority in front of the Multiverse Justice League? That would be a stupid decision, Volthoom."
"It should have been. But considering you're acting so much like a British football hooligan, forget it," the First Lantern shook his head.
"How does he manage to be so righteous?" Arkham Batman asked, somewhat puzzled. "Is he really not worried about being exposed at all?"
"His attitude is also too terrible," Adventure Batman said. "He clearly faked his death to deceive his friend, how can he still humiliate the other person like this when he returns? This is really somewhat..."
"Shameless?" Main Universe Batman continued.
"Why would it be like this?" Adventure Batman truly didn't understand.
"Perhaps he really thinks he's not wrong, or rather, that the other person is more wrong?"
"Impossible," Arkham Batman said. "Lucifer didn't do anything wrong, he was just deceived."
"But, is he someone who can be deceived?"
Arkham Batman looked at Main Universe Batman, and Main Universe Batman said: "Universe Administrators can directly see the backend data. He didn't recognize him, which proves he has never looked. Not even until now."
"But this only proves... he's not very serious about his job," Adventure Batman racked his brains. "It doesn't prove he doesn't care about his friend, right?"
"Yes, this isn't quite right." After saying so much, Main Universe Batman finally threw out his argument. "If he isn't truly a shameless person, then he's doing it on purpose."
"I don't understand," Arkham Batman shook his head.
"Why do I feel like the First Lantern is deliberately provoking Lucifer?" Strange asked. "Insisting on asking about the wine glass fragment, and even calling him a football hooligan. No one could tolerate that, right?"
Schiller was actually observing as well. After all, he wasn't really just here to watch the show. What he wanted to know more was why Anatoly wanted to hide it from Lucifer, and how he managed to hide it from him.
You have to know, Lucifer can see the backend data. Logically speaking, he shouldn't have been unable to discover it. But he just didn't discover it. This proves he never looked at it at all. And even if he discovered the pendant on Anatoly, he never suspected it.
This might be because when Anatoly used Schiller's body before, it was Schiller's appearance. And now this look should be his original appearance. The difference in appearance between the two is relatively large.
Schiller's appearance tends to be mixed-race, with certain Eastern features. But Anatoly has a very standard Slavic look, high brow ridges, a high bridge of the nose, and deep-set eyes. Although not blonde, those blue eyes are basically only possessed by white people. Appearance has a relatively large influence on demeanor and temperament; it's understandable that Lucifer couldn't tell just by looking.
And as for why he didn't look at the data, Schiller felt it might still be because of Lucifer's arrogance. First, he felt Anatoly was dead, so he wouldn't easily change his opinion. Second, he looked down on characters like the First Lantern anyway. Don't look at the First Lantern's setting as being quite strong; he's still not enough in front of Lucifer. Dealing with such characters doesn't require the power of a Universe Administrator at all; even using his Archangel or Satan power would be enough, no need to bother looking at data.
This is the downside of not working properly. Schiller thought, it must be that the doctor knew Lucifer was slacking off on this job, not thinking of checking the backend data for decades, which is why he dared to be so blatant.
As for his attitude now, it doesn't look like a genuine counter-accusation; instead, it's like he's been provoking Lucifer all along. And because he knows Lucifer very well, this method is quite effective. Lucifer absolutely cannot tolerate such humiliation; his wings have already fully spread, which is the prelude to taking action.
However, Schiller couldn't let him take action just like that. Because once they started fighting, Anatoly could stage a retreat of the First Lantern and slip away logically.
Afterwards, Lucifer still wouldn't remember this defeated subordinate and wouldn't investigate what was going on. That wouldn't do.
"Send me over," Schiller turned his head and said.
Charles still looked a bit hesitant, but Erik had already taken action. When approaching Lucifer, Schiller shouted: "Lucifer!"
Lucifer's flapping wings stiffened. He turned his head to look at Schiller and said: "Why are you here?"
"You know, Arrogance will stop at nothing to save his broken student. I have to find a way to get the Earth down from the Source Wall. As for you, what are you doing here? Didn't you tell me you were fixing compatibility issues?"
Lucifer opened his mouth, obviously not knowing how to answer. He hadn't intended to show up at all, so when Schiller sent a message asking about the progress of the compatibility fix, he habitually replied "fixing it." He didn't expect to be caught skipping work.
Distracted by Schiller, Lucifer's anger dissipated by half. He changed the subject somewhat stiffly: "How do you plan to get the Earth down?" ===== CHAPTER 4614 =====
