Chapter 4924

~11 min read 2,023 words

This farce is still far from over.

Shiler also realized that he truly lacked the basic knowledge for experiments; if he continued like this, he might not be able to learn it himself and then go teach Gordon and Ethan. So their team simply logged out collectively and came to Jonathan's place to learn how to conduct experiments.

Jonathan was really about to break down. He now felt that this was Brainiac's new method of torture and interrogation devised to retaliate against him for destroying his server room. Unfortunately, this evil artificial intelligence always reads but does not reply when facing such problems, and Jonathan could do nothing about it.

The good news is that after coming into contact with Ethan and Gordon, Shiler has actually become quite respectful of safety regulations and possesses a sense of reverence as a scholar.

Shiler is "doesn't understand," Ethan is "doesn't understand and doesn't ask," while Gordon is "doesn't understand and doesn't ask, I'll try it first." If mathematics is the ladder to heaven, then chemistry is the ticket to hell. Physics is standing on the shoulders of giants, but chemistry is also standing on the corpses of giants.

You cannot say they are fearless due to ignorance. Aside from Ethan, the other two know how formidable Jonathan is. Shiler is the evaluator for fear toxin, and since Jonathan began producing this toxin, he has not missed a single version. Gordon is even more of a benchmark in crime-fighting, having faced Jonathan countless times, not only having inhaled the fear toxin himself but even having once overcome it.

But who knows if it's the influence of Gotham's feng shui; once these two people entered the laboratory, the supervillain Scarecrow amounted to nothing, and the fear toxin was just some roadside thing. I inevitably used the method of a witch brewing potions to concoct the most toxic poison in this world.

Shiler could still be somewhat better; at least he is a scholar and can have a bit of patience to listen to Jonathan's long-winded principles. Gordon originally couldn't focus, and he was also very curious about how the fear toxin is actually made. His understanding of chemical experiments basically stays at the level of potion-making: just chop this, dice that, throw it into the crucible and stir, and then you can get a potion.

Before Jonathan even finished speaking, he was already impatiently wanting to pour all the contents of these test tubes together. Regardless of distillation extraction, catalytic reactions, or chemical formulas, whenever Jonathan said something was corrosive or dangerous, he would just add that in.

But however you say it, Jonathan can indeed be called a supervillain, and he very wisely chose to dual-cultivate in psychology and chemistry. If his psychology level were even slightly worse, he wouldn't have understood Gordon's meaning and thus stopped him in time; by now, they should have already been called together by the Lord.

Jonathan stood at the chemistry lab bench, just like whack-a-mole, having to say just two sentences before stopping them from touching the experimental materials. After finally finishing explaining the principles, when it came to letting them conduct the configuration themselves, it was truly thrilling and suspenseful, full of ups and downs.

Various racks and fixtures were not used; all flasks, test tubes, and beakers were held by hand, pouring one thing into another, all like drizzling olive oil while cooking. A most basic bleaching reagent was prepared back and forth several times, the color wouldn't wash out, and the fabric would dissolve as soon as it was put in. All that can be said is that the corrosive agent Jonathan used to corrode Brainiac's server room still used rather conservative materials; if they used Gordon's formula, not even a trace of evidence would be left.

When the experiment finally ended, Jonathan let out a long sigh. The reputation of this mad scientist has truly been wronged. An amateur waving a hand lightly surpasses the lifetimes of many supervillains. The explosives that even the Joker dares not touch, passing teenagers might not dare either, and the hazardous chemicals that Scarecrow cannot produce—perhaps even the Gotham Police Commissioner couldn't concoct them.

"Alright," Jonathan shouted loudly, "just like this!"

It's not that their experiment was done well enough or the process was standardized enough to pass; rather, even the strictest teacher, seeing their experimental method, would also have to let go. There truly aren't that many people who are at odds with their own lifespan.

Shiler is indeed the one who learned the best among them. But he also belongs to rote memorization—he just memorized the procedures. Although some operations are not very standardized, this is playing a game, not really taking an exam, so close enough is fine.

Ethan also learned quite well. Although his operations are especially non-standard, he did indeed memorize the procedures. Gordon truly has no aptitude for this; he's just not the material for learning this, and in the end, he didn't really remember the procedures either.

As expected, Shiler and Ethan passed, while Gordon did not. Those who passed are qualified to enter the teaching building of the Chemistry Department for exploration, and Gordon was directly thrown out.

But he just doesn't believe this. He indeed has no talent in this area; after all, experimental operation is required, and it's still a bit too beyond his level—who without a foundation would bother with this? He decided to go try his luck in another department.

Although Ethan passed, he felt that two people exploring this teaching building together lacked efficiency. After all, he is a medical student and still has confidence in his medical level. So he decided to go check out the medical school.

Shiler originally also wanted to just take the fear toxin and leave, but it was utterly unsurprising that the monster very much like a scarecrow was exactly the area boss of this region. When Shiler broke into his laboratory, battle was imminent.

"Run, run fast!" Ted used a holographic projection to raise a shield, letting his teammates hurry and run. Meanwhile, behind the others, one large and one small figure were sprinting frantically through the sewers.

The sewer exploration had been going fairly smoothly; several people were gradually approaching the underground of Wayne Tower. But the trouble was, there wasn't just one boss in this sewer. Just short of two miles from the target location, a huge Lei Ting crocodile popped out.

It looked somewhat like Waylon, but actually its size and tonnage were much larger than Killer Croc's, almost filling the entire sewer, and it was obviously irrational, with extremely strong aggression. Wearing a set of EAWAQE for sprinting, it almost knocked Ted out.

Ted also used a flamethrower, but the surface of this crocodile monster was covered with a layer of slime, which prevented the viscous gasoline from adhering well to its body; it burned for a while and then went out, while the pain instead stimulated it further, making it chase even more fiercely.

If it were just this one crocodile, it might still be manageable, but on their way forward, they encountered another monster—the ice-attribute monster they had previously prepared to deal with. It should be a gang member from the northern district, only turned into something similar to Mr. Freeze, with ice-mist spray and an ice spear gun.

Strangely, these two monsters don't seem to be hostile to each other; they joined forces to attack this group of people. Solomon Grundy originally wanted to intervene, but he needed to clear the small fry first, otherwise he would have no space. And among the remaining people, aside from Ted, it was very hard for them to cause damage to the monsters; instead, they were easily hit by the monsters if not careful.

The skill combinations of these two monsters are both disgusting, and together they are nearly invincible. That ice guy just hides behind Killer Croc and shoots; anyone wanting to get close for melee gets frozen. Killer Croc dies dead blocking in front of him, firmly protecting him behind. Besides, the sewer space is narrow, so only frontal attacks are possible, no flanking. All that can be said is that this dung-monster combination is also something this game forces you to endure.

"First, retreat from the sewers!" Solomon Grundy said, "We can't fight them here—let's run upward first."

Their original plan was to avoid appearing on the surface to prevent encountering the final boss. But now this situation also doesn't allow for much consideration—first go up and deal with these two monsters, then talk.

Arriving at the sewer entrance closest to Wayne Tower, several people scrambled up in a hurry. Solomon Grundy still didn't forget to turn back and tell the scout: "If I had known, I'd have let you use that cannon."

The scout gave a light snort, saying nothing. After reaching the surface, combat became much easier; Solomon Grundy took the lead, first chopping off the right arm of the crocodile monster with one sword strike, and nearly splitting the distant monster behind him in two. If not for the ice mist interfering with his movement, he would have already resolved it.

Nightwing used grappling hooks to restrict their movements, while Ted, carrying a flamethrower, kept interfering with them, and the scout used a shotgun to clear the surrounding small monsters. These two monsters were soon beaten to a pulp.

Just as Solomon Grundy made a big leap upward to prepare for the harvest, the sky suddenly darkened, as if dark clouds had covered all light. A black shadow appeared at the street corner.

"Hiss..." Nightwing turned his head and looked, "Batman!"

No one would question Robin's judgment in this regard. But now they face a rather awkward situation: these two bosses have already been reduced to low health, seemingly about to be killed and drop equipment, yet another even more formidable monster has appeared. What should we do?

It can be seen that Solomon Grundy and Ted both want to be greedy, but the scout very decisively said: "Withdraw!"

Solomon Grundy hesitated for a moment, but still followed the scout. After they left, the others had no objections either and could only leave. Several people returned to the sewer at the fastest speed, after all, the monsters there had basically been cleared, making escape relatively easier.

After the scout led the people down, he did not rush to leave but waited there, carefully listening to the movements above. Not long after, a tragic cry suddenly came through, which sounded like that of the crocodile monster.

"They've started fighting!" Ted said excitedly, "Is Batman fighting those two monsters?"

"Looks like it." Nightwing was also listening carefully, "It seems there are factions among monsters too—like those two earlier were from the same faction, so they don't attack each other, but Batman and them are clearly different..."

"Let's go." The scout said.

They left the Wayne Tower area at the fastest speed. This was obviously a very correct decision, because soon that dark shadow appeared at the sewer entrance. But due to the activity zone restrictions, he didn't stay there long and soon left.

The team members groped their way back, opened the sewer door and looked up, and instantly saw equipment scattered all over the ground.

"We struck it rich, we struck it rich!" Ted could hardly contain his excitement, "My goodness, did I missee? Why does it look like there's a golden item?"

"You didn't missee," Nightwing lowered his voice and said, "It looks like golden equipment dropped. Could it be..."

After confirming the situation above, they went up, and as expected, the ice spear gun in the hands of the distant monster exploded out, its quality being exactly golden.

"My goodness!" Ted was so happy he almost jumped up, "It really is an ice spear gun—we have an ice spear gun now!"

"But this thing probably needs ammunition, right?" Nightwing frowned and said, "Where can we get... wait, did the Arkham Knights open the underground cold storage of Gotham University's cryogenics lab? If so, then we'd have ammunition too?"
