Chapter 59

~10 min read 1,881 words

"Later, go deliver this report to Mrs. Felton in the Academic Affairs Office. Of course, as for matters related to the club, organize them after the final exams. I don't think the students have much spare time to deal with these things right now."

Evans, holding the documents, nodded and said, "Indeed, almost everyone is studying very hard. Even those who previously had records of skipping class have been running to the library frequently lately."

Schiller rummaged through his desk, then handed him another stack of papers and said, "Although I told you all that the entire book is important, I think with your current level, trying to memorize the whole book is probably wishful thinking. This is the scope of the thesis topics; tell them to hurry up and finish reading it..."

Just as he was speaking, Bruce knocked on the door. Evans said, "Then I won't disturb you, Professor. I will arrange everything as soon as possible."

After Bruce entered, he sat down in a chair very naturally. Schiller, while tidying up the teaching materials on his desk, asked him, "Have you finished reviewing?"

"Of course, it wasn't that much." Bruce was still quite proud of his own intelligence and memory.

"You'd better make sure your thesis can pass, otherwise I'll call your butler... what was his name again?"

"Uh, Alfred, Professor. My butler's name is Alfred."

"Oh, right. If you don't pass this exam, I'll call your butler, Alfred."

Bruce was silent for a moment and said, "Fine, you'd better give me some more materials..."

He had a subtle feeling that Schiller's matter-of-fact "calling the parents" attitude made him feel like he was being treated as a little kid. He felt a bit resentful, but as soon as he imagined the scene, Bruce felt that he should just go back and read some more.

"What do you plan to do during the holiday?"

"I have a lot of things to do, you know. What do you plan to do?"

"The attending physician at Arkham Asylum called me yesterday. We are old classmates. He's a bit overwhelmed over there and invited me to go help. I plan to take two students there for an internship."

"Oh? And who do you plan to take?"

"I've already spoken to Falcone. Evans is definitely going; his grades are quite good, and he is now the top of the class. As for the other one, I haven't decided yet."

Just as Bruce was about to speak, Schiller said, "But it's definitely not you anyway; your grades are too terrible."

Bruce curled his lip and said, "The situation at the East Docks hasn't calmed down yet. Without the Edward family, it's a bit chaotic there again. I've been very busy at night lately, and so has Gordon."

"I see, you must be busy at night with more than just your heroic career. How is that heart-stealing female thief doing?"

Bruce said, "Of course, I've only been busy with the other half of my career lately. Selina's good friend Maggie hasn't been feeling well, so she hasn't been out and about."

"However..." Bruce smiled and said, "Our righteous lawyer, Mr. Harvey, seems to have some movement."

Schiller raised an eyebrow and said, "He's fallen for a Cat Getan girl? That's truly rare. Who has such great charm?"

"Christine, it's Christine."

"That head of the cheerleading troupe? But isn't she a fan of Batman?"

"That old principal was sued and imprisoned again precisely because Harvey helped Christine testify against him once more. And this time, due to Harvey's defense, the old principal had no excuses like medical parole to use. He was sentenced to 137 years; I'm afraid he'll never come out again."

"You know, being eloquent and showing off one's prowess in court, how could that not earn a girl's gratitude and admiration?"

Schiller touched the corner of his brow and said, "Tsk tsk, our lawyer friend is truly lucky in love."

After Bruce left, Schiller also returned to the apartment building where he lived. He was still chatting with Green Lantern in his mind.

He was too experienced with this kind of situation, because the current Green Lantern's state was exactly the same as that of little Spider-Man when he had just acquired his superpowers.

Clearly, he had already obtained the Green Lantern ring from that alien.

Compared to Peter, Hal was more mature. After all, he was older and had a pilot's license; his psychological quality was much better than that of the high schooler Spider-Man. So even though he was very excited chatting with netizens, he didn't reveal anything about aliens or the magical ring at all.

Schiller chatted with him for a while, then clicked on his avatar and found that Green Lantern's abilities could indeed be copied.

Schiller clicked copy, but didn't expect that this time it was delayed for a long time, and the system's prompt sound didn't come either.

After a while, he suddenly discovered that the symbiote in his mind was emitting a slight buzzing sound.

He called out to the symbiote a few times, but there was no echo. After a while, the system finally sent a prompt sound:

"World Within Restraint loaded."

Just as Schiller was confused, the symbiote suddenly sent a series of excited brainwaves, and then Schiller felt that there was something extra on his finger. He looked down and saw that it was a silver-gray, simple, and ancient ring.

Schiller felt very strange. The system's ability to copy shouldn't be able to copy external objects, and even if it copied Green Lantern's Green Lantern ring, it should be green. Why did it turn gray?

Then, the symbiote gave Schiller the answer.

Green Lantern is a very special hero. The vast majority of his abilities come from the Green Lantern ring, including shaping green energy weapons, Green Lantern energy force fields, teleportation abilities, and healing abilities, etc. These are all special abilities brought to him by the Green Lantern ring.

Therefore, the abilities belonging to Green Lantern that the system copied must also have a carrier.

Schiller didn't have a Green Lantern ring, so the system turned the symbiote Gray Mist into the carrier for this ability.

"So the carrier is you, then what is the use of this ring?"

"It's useless, but it looks good." The symbiote said.

"Fine." Schiller said.

He glanced at his finger. The ring was actually very simple; it was just a silver-gray ring band with a pattern made of a few wavy lines on it. It didn't look out of place. The only thing a bit strange was that it was worn on his ring finger.

"So how do I use this ability?" Schiller asked the symbiote.

"Think about it in your mind."

Schiller closed his eyes and concentrated. Soon, he discovered that there was a mass of gray mist within his pitch-black field of vision. The mist gradually enlarged, and after a flash of white light, his consciousness appeared on an island shrouded in gray mist.

This island was not large; one could see the end of it as far as the eye could see. Schiller controlled his vision to fly to the edge of the island and then looked down.

Below the island was a boundless, enormous city.

Between the island and the city, it was still shrouded by layers of hazy gray mist. That city was unimaginably large. In the haze, all the buildings presented strange shapes. From time to time, enormous creatures whose specific shapes could not be seen would shuttle through the city.

This was an isolated island floating above a huge city.

Schiller began to recall Green Lantern's World Within Restraint. In the comics, the interior of the Green Lantern ring contains an independent world. Green Lantern once shrank his enemies and locked them into this world, and he himself had also been trapped in the Emerald Dunes of the Green Lantern ring's World Within Restraint.

Even the owner of the Green Lantern ring seems unable to fully control their World Within Restraint. Just like Schiller now, his consciousness could only stay within the range of this isolated island, while the huge city below, where no details could be seen, was completely beyond his control.

But fortunately, this isolated island seemed to have no connection with the city below, and those enormous shadows that suddenly appeared in the mist didn't discover that there was something extra above their heads.

And Schiller was surprised to find that he seemed to have entered this world in his physical body, and here, he could still communicate with the symbiote.

He cut off his consciousness and returned to reality. He looked up at the clock; time was flowing.

In other words, that place was equivalent to an independent shelter. Theoretically speaking, if he encountered an irresistible danger, he could directly enter the Gray Mist world and then wait for the crisis to pass.

Schiller thought that the huge city beneath that isolated island, and those enormous figures looming in the gray mist, probably must hide huge secrets and were also very dangerous. Staying there for too long was not a good idea. Unless he encountered a danger that could threaten his life, it was better to go to this strange and bizarre World Within Restraint less often.

Later in the day, Mrs. Felton from the Academic Affairs Office came over. She had originally come to check the textbook fees for the next semester with Schiller, but she was a very enthusiastic lady. She said to Schiller, "Our new principal was just discharged from the hospital yesterday. Perhaps he will return to the office tomorrow."

She reminded Schiller nonchalantly, "He seems a bit anxious; he might want to take drastic measures."

Just as Mrs. Felton said, Schiller received a call from Principal Xie Dun that evening.

This time, Xie Dun seemed to have learned to be smart. He didn't aggressively demand that Schiller complete any tasks like he did at the beginning, but instead said a bunch of empty words about working hard, and finally told Schiller that there might be changes in some professor positions at Cat Getan University recently. He invited some old friends he knew from Princeton to introduce experts and professors to him to form the new team of professors at Cat Getan University.

He seemed to want to use this method to make Schiller feel nervous. After all, in a university, the resources in a professor's hands depend on the school's emphasis on their subject. Now Schiller is indeed a golden signboard of Cat Getan University; his resume is really strong, and there are even some students from other places who specifically came to apply to Cat Getan University because of this professor.

But if more world-class experts and scholars join this university and organize their own laboratories in the school, leading students to research world-class topics, then whether the school's resources will still be so tilted toward the subject of psychology is hard to say.

Schiller originally had no opinion on this matter. After all, he also hoped that Cat Getan University could be better and add luster to his teaching resume.

Until he saw the name Victor Fries on the list of professors newly hired by Principal Xie Dun.
