Chapter 627

~3 min read 440 words

Just as the atmosphere in the room grew unnatural, the door suddenly opened, a flashlight beam shining in and blinding Angela, who raised her arm to shield her eyes.

Female agent Kela entered, saw Angela and Constantine, paused for a moment, then said: "The building just lost power— are you two alright?"

"We're fine," Angela replied, her tone slightly unnatural, but Kela stepped in and said: "Are the clues you're investigating also in this room? I've searched the entire fourth floor— this is the only room left unexamined."

"Then go ahead and search," Constantine said, pulling Angela away into the hallway. Angela shook off his hand and snapped: "What are you doing? I won't let that agent rummage through my sister's room!"

Constantine stopped and looked into her eyes: "Have you forgotten? She said she's here to investigate the missing agent."

Angela took a deep breath, calmed herself, thought for a moment, then said: "If someone here is conducting illegal experiments and brewing a vast conspiracy, then besides the Soviet spy embedded in this organization, the missing agent this female agent is searching for might very well have infiltrated the organization too—and been murdered by them."

"What's certain is that my sister's death is tied to those conducting illegal experiments here—they are my targets for revenge. Even for the sake of the people of Metropolis, I cannot let their conspiracy succeed," Angela said firmly.

"So you want to cooperate with that agent?" Constantine asked.

"Yes," Angela stepped before Constantine, meeting his gaze: "Our top priority now is to stop this organization's conspiracy. We share the same enemy."

"Don't you want to deal with those demons anymore?"

Angela glanced back and said: "Regardless, demons can't possibly launch a large-scale invasion of Metropolis right now—but if the water supply is contaminated, countless people in Metropolis will die."

With that, Angela turned resolutely to walk back—but suddenly Constantine grabbed her arm. Angela paused, turned to look at him, but his eyes weren't on her; they were fixed on the hallway ahead. He said: "I smell something… unnatural…"

No sooner had he spoken than the hallway lights flickered and went out again. Angela opened her mouth to ask—when her arm was yanked violently to the right, sending her tumbling down. She saw a massive black shadow flash past her left side.

"Hellhound!" Constantine's voice rang out: "Damn it, how did it get here? Go! Run! To the room with the magic array!"

The two sprinted back toward the room they'd just left, while Kela, confused by their sudden return, stared—when suddenly the darkness coalescing above the ceiling thickened, as if about to drip down.
