Chapter 719: U: Infinite Event (35)
Three female Spider-Women let out a simultaneous scream, causing the figure across from them to freeze.
At that moment, Gwen Spider-Woman looked around and realized they had landed right on the same rooftop as before; it was now dusk, and the man before her—Shiler—appeared to be enjoying the view.
Gwen stepped back and said to the spider-girl: "... idn't you say you had a powerful ally?"
"I'm calling him now," Spider-Thread said calmly and coolly. "Everyone stay still. Don't provoke him. Wait for the ally to arrive—then we'll move the wounded to safety first..."
"You'd better hurry. I have a feeling he's about to strike."
Just then, a thunderous boom echoed from midair, and an eerie melody filled everyone's ears, accompanied by English lines spoken in a peculiar accent: "Hell's visitor! Spider-Man! Here he comes!"
Instantly, a massive mech landed in the center of New York City, perched atop its head sat a red-and-blue Spider-Man.
He braced one hand on the ground and raised the other, shouting: "Reo Burton! Let's go! We are friends of the youth—Spider-Man!"
Both the Spider-Man on the rooftop and Shiler stood frozen. The robot's design was indeed majestic, but the music blaring from its built-in speakers was anything but pleasant—constantly emitting booming tremors and shrill screams.
This Spider-Man's lines carried a strange cadence. Gwen squinted and asked the spider-girl beside her: "What's he yelling? What friend? And what's 'Four Hundred Auntie'?"
The spider-girl shook her head, but at that moment, she saw Shiler leap into the air and land on the edge of a nearby rooftop, very close to the mech. The self-proclaimed Four Hundred Auntie Spider-Man narrowed his eyes and said:
"I sense it... the aura of a powerful one! You are a worthy opponent! State your name—let us engage in a glorious duel!"
"My name... is Pei En!"
As his voice faded, the rain over New York intensified. Shiler's figure vanished, replaced by multiple afterimages appearing beside the mech.
Four Hundred Auntie Spider-Man spun wildly, snorted coldly, and said: "Is this the legendary Shadow Clone Technique? I knew I wasn't mistaken! Back in my day, one of my opponents used this very skill..."
Gwen, standing on the adjacent rooftop, nudged the spider-girl with her shoulder and asked: "What's going on over there? Why aren't they fighting?"
"How should I know?" The spider-girl raised her binoculars and said: "From their lip movements, it looks like he's recalling past opponents..."
"Is now the time for reminiscing?!"
Gwen raised her voice: "Are you just going to let that purple-eyed bastard keep reminiscing?!"
"Looks like it," the spider-girl said, peering closely through the binoculars. "Wait—no! Even the purple-eyed one's fallen into memory!"
"This... they're stuck. What do we do?" Spider-Thread said, troubled. "During the transfer, some of the wounded's wounds reopened—we need to stop the bleeding now..."
Just then, the sound of metal tentacles scraping the ground rose as Otto climbed up from below, bringing several medical robots with him. Watching the Spider-Men being carried off by the robots, Otto said:
"Thanks to my experiences in another universe—Stark from that world invented these robots. I only glanced at the schematics, but I still managed to reconstruct them..."
Gwen Spider-Woman remained wary of Doctor Octopus, but with a major threat looming, having any ally was better than none.
She turned and whispered to the spider-girl: "Go with him. Don't let him do anything suspicious. I'll stay here with Spider-Thread—if they start fighting, I'll lure them out of New York..."
The spider-girl nodded and followed Otto away.
Gwen Spider-Woman stared grimly at the battlefield. She knew that if the two clashed, New York would likely suffer catastrophic damage, injuring countless civilians. She had to lure these two destroyers somewhere uninhabited.
Half an hour passed. Gwen's stance shifted from standing to sitting. Spider-Thread beside her asked: "... till not done reminiscing?"
Gwen raised her binoculars and said: "They'd just finished, then said one line each—and slipped back into memory."
"Do you think," Spider-Thread mused, rubbing her chin, "if they keep reminiscing like this, we might get a chance to capture Shiler?"
"Hard to say. Depends on how long they'll keep going. I think it's almost over. Get ready," Gwen Spider-Woman said.
Another hour passed. Spider-Thread reached over, plucked a chip from the bag in Gwen's hand, and popped it into her mouth. "... till not done? Where do they even get this many stories?"
"Who knows? It's dark now," Gwen Spider-Woman said, eating a chip.
Two more hours passed. Gwen Spider-Woman lay flat on the ground, pressing her forehead with her palm. "How long are they planning to stand there? They've been reminiscing for three and a half hours!"
Spider-Thread turned the empty chip bag upside down and shook it, then peered at the center of the battlefield. "That new Spider-Man and his mech have made New York's traffic even worse. If he keeps standing there, at least twenty thousand people will be late tomorrow..."
"Wait! They're moving!"
"They're finally moving!"
Gwen Spider-Woman shot upright with a *whoosh*, raised her binoculars—and saw both the mech and Shiler moving.
The mech extended its arm toward Shiler; one of Shiler's clones flew toward the arm. When they collided, a brilliant flash erupted.
Then... they stopped again.
"My god! How can they stall even here?!"
Gwen Spider-Woman threw her hands up in exasperation. "What are they doing? Why did they stop again?!"
Spider-Thread took the binoculars and peered. "Judging by lip movements, they've slipped back into memory again. Let me see..."
"I don't know Japanese well, but they seem to be recalling who they each used this move on. The mech Spider-Man's at the third person. Shiler's ahead—he's already at the fifth..."
Watching the suspended mechanical arm and Shiler's clones frozen in midair, Gwen Spider-Woman waved her hand. "I'm going to find a hotel. Maybe when I wake up, they'll finally fight."
"Take me with you," Spider-Thread said, following her.
Early the next morning, Gwen Spider-Woman awoke on the hotel's plush bed. She walked to the window, yawned, pulled back the curtains, and raised her binoculars.
On New York's skyline, the massive robot and five identical Shilers still maintained their collision pose.
"Let me see... Spider-Thread! Come over and translate—what are they saying?" Gwen called to the still-sleeping Spider-Thread.
Spider-Thread, half-asleep, shuffled to the window, took the binoculars, and said: "Oh, they're remembering childhood—ramen shops and stuff. I don't get Eastern food..."
"Why don't we suggest they take their chat to a bar? They're blocking traffic so badly." Gwen looked down. The streets below were filled with drivers who had gotten out of their cars to scream curses.
After all, Four Hundred Auntie's mech—one single leg—could block an entire intersection. With such a massive robot standing there, no driver, no matter how reckless, dared approach. All five main arteries of East New York were completely jammed, vehicles stretched from one end of the road to the other.
Gwen Spider-Woman acted immediately. She shot a strand of web, swung over, leapt across rooftops, and approached the two. Then she shouted: "Can't you two take your chat to a bar?! There's one right next door! Can't you see?! Why are you standing here blocking traffic?!"
"
Suddenly, the Four Hundred Auntie Spider-Man, mid-memory on the mech, snapped awake and roared with laughter:
"What a manly battle! I haven't had such a thrilling fight in ages!"
"
"A bar? You mean a ramen shop?! Perfect! Real men eat steaming ramen after a duel! Pei En, let's move this fight somewhere else—HAHAHAHAHA!"
!
"
Watching the two vanish into the horizon, Gwen Spider-Woman crossed her arms and said to Spider-Thread beside her: "... here's the manliness here?! More importantly—where's the duel?! They only threw two moves, and neither won!"
Spider-Thread also shook her head, clearly baffled. At that moment, Otto appeared on the rooftop, followed by the spider-girl. The spider-girl stepped forward and said to Gwen Spider-Woman:
"The wounded have been settled. Most Spider-Men have recovered and can rejoin the fight. We need to return and rescue the others..."
The two remaining female Spider-Women nodded. As they turned to leave, suddenly, a starry sky appeared over New York—the sky darkened instantly, and within it emerged Solus's colossal silhouette. He had followed them.
Chasing these motionless, wounded Spider-Men was far easier than hunting the active ones—and once found, they were a feast. With his hunter's instinct awakened, hunger drove Solus to act.
"Damn! Solus is here! Quick! Spider-Thread! Go get those two ramen-eaters back!"
!" Spider-Gwen cried out anxiously.
But Solus's massive hand was already reaching for them. Gwen Spider-Woman, Spider-Thread, and the spider-girl scattered in three directions.
The appearance of such a monstrous creature in New York's sky sent citizens into panic. Worse still, with Four Hundred Auntie's mech gone, traffic had begun to clear—until this new monster appeared, causing drivers to lose control, spinning their wheels wildly, triggering multiple accidents.
New York's roads became even more congested. Finally, a voice of unbearable rage erupted:
"How much longer are you going to block this?! "
!"
Gwen Spider-Woman, hanging from a building's side by web, looked down—and saw an ambulance, slightly larger than normal, speeding recklessly along the sidewalk, crashing straight into Solus's hand.
Solus winced and recoiled—but in that instant, the ambulance, with a structure Gwen couldn't comprehend, instantly transformed into a robot.
Gwen's mouth dropped open as the newly formed robot punched Solus's hand—*thud, thud*—clearly venting its rage over the traffic jam.
Gwen understood. When traffic is gridlocked, people can walk—but cars can't. Being stuck on foot is merely inconvenient. Being stuck in a car? That's true despair.
At that moment, Gwen felt cold raindrops on her face. She looked up—dark rain clouds had gathered over New York, but were instantly scattered by Solus's starry sky.
A wind suddenly rose along the skyline.
A single leaf spiraled upward, drifting past fluttering fabric. Pei En's long robe snapped loudly in the wind as his deep voice echoed across New York:
"You've dispelled my Rain Tiger Self-Existence Technique... Finally, a worthy opponent."
