Chapter 72: Genius on the Left, Madman on the Right (Part 2)

~11 min read 2,004 words

The changes at Arkham Asylum were seen by the gangs of Cat Getan, big and small; among them, there were those who coveted this fat piece of meat, yet every plan targeting Yin Wensi was dismantled by him, who skillfully exploited the intricate relationships between the various gangs.

Compared to Yin Wensi, the gangs that Bruce had previously found troublesome seemed rather unintelligent; the first method they thought of was assassination, something they knew well, for even the smallest gang could find one or two killers.

However, Yin Wensi's deal with Falcone brought the Godfather profits he had not expected. The Godfather was old and urgently wanted to leave more capital for his descendants; therefore, this sudden windfall was something he Places Great Emphasis On. If this system could be operated continuously, the industry that Evans would inherit from him would become even more stable.

Consequently, the entire Arkham Asylum was guarded by the Godfather so tightly that not even water could leak through; Yin Wensi was his key protected object, for which he spared no expense in hiring the most top-tier security personnel.

Yin Wensi's irreplaceability lay in the fact that Falcone saw the possibility of creating a new order from him. If this professor truly brought more new changes to Cat Getan, then the Falcone family, seizing the initiative, would surely occupy one of the most important positions in these new orders.

Among the local powers, the biggest snake was determined to protect Yin Wensi at all costs, while the other smaller snakes basically had no way to act. Falcone had ruled Cat Getan's underworld for so many years; even though he was old, his remaining power was still formidable. The gangs had already lost some strength and could not possibly go head-to-head with this Godfather.

Of course, if they could not kill Yin Wensi, they could try to get him moved out and replace him with their own people. Not everyone possessed Falcone's foresight; they only thought that if their own person sat in this position, the profits here would be astonishingly huge. Even without discussing the wealth benefits that might come from the rules Yin Wensi created, controlling such a place could allow their power to expand several times overnight.

They indeed dared not confront Falcone directly, nor did they dare to snatch meat from the tiger's mouth, but causing some small trouble was still possible.

The gangs of Cat Getan also produced talents; among them, there were certainly some smart people who found the president of Cat Getan University, Shelden.

Shelden was also an old unlucky fellow. Originally, he wanted to recruit several new professors to balance Yin Wensi, but he did not expect the newly hired Mr. Freeze, Victor, to not only disagree with him but also quickly bond with Yin Wensi. Before long, the two became good friends who talked about everything, and Shelden's plan failed once again.

He had not been quiet for very long before the gangs came knocking on his door again.

Shelden was an outsider; he had no power in Cat Getan. However, the rule of Cat Getan was that you must have at least one gang standing behind you to speak with confidence. Shelden did not understand this point, so the day after he refused those gangs, he was shot on his way home from work.

Those gangs still found him useful, so they did not take his life. When he saw those gang bosses in the hospital again, Shelden understood Cat Getan's greatest survival rule: if you have a gun, you had better have more bullets than others; if you do not have a gun, then shut up and listen.

Shelden could legitimately call Yin Wensi back to the school; after all, he was the president, and it was quite normal for there to be academic work requiring the school's faculty to handle. And if the professor refused these normal work arrangements, then he would be the one in the wrong.

Shelden made up a random excuse; he thought it didn't matter if Yin Wensi didn't come back, as this would give him a perfect opportunity to find fault with him. He was just worried about not having a reasonable excuse.

However, the day after receiving his call, Yin Wensi returned obediently, with an extremely good attitude and very timely action. When Shelden saw him in the president's office, he simply could not find a single flaw.

The excuse Shelden used to call Yin Wensi back was just some trivial matters like processing files; Yin Wensi worked in the archives while remotely controlling the situation at Arkham Asylum.

Shelden had previously enjoyed being a cloud player watching Yin Wensi's classes; this time, after Yin Wensi returned, he also used surveillance to watch the archives.

Then, Yin Wensi let him truly witness what was called the simple folk customs of Cat Getan City.

In the following days, from the content of Yin Wensi's phone conversations, Shelden heard the names of the heads of the twelve largest gang families in all of Cat Getan. Within three days, Yin Wensi had greeted them at least a hundred times. Accompanying the appearance of the gang bosses' names were either terms for various contraband or slang regarding smuggling locations.

Among them, what made Shelden tremble with fear the most was that they repeatedly mentioned manipulating police, judges, and juries in their conversations, as casually as discussing what to eat for dinner.

Most importantly, one day, he heard Yin Wensi say lightly: "... If this mayor won't work, then replace him. Cat Getan's terrible traffic situation is half his responsibility. Since he has no ability to take responsibility for this, then at least he still has a life..."

Shelden wanted to pack his bags and leave this damn city right then and there.

As time passed, the content of Yin Wensi's conversations that Shelden heard became increasingly outrageous, beginning to involve some secrets of how the Falcone family rose to power, including some of their rather hidden smuggling routes and plantation industries that could bring huge profits.

The more Shelden listened, the more alarmed he became. Although he was not a native of Cat Getan, having mixed in the political circles of other cities for so long, his political instinct was sharp enough.

At this moment, Shelden knew that this Professor Rodriguez, who taught psychology, was probably absolutely not just a professor.

When an event exceeds the scope of human cognition, humans will always use their imagination to fill it in as reasonable; the brain will automatically search various matching details in memory to corroborate this inference. Shelden was the same.

He thought, no wonder Yin Wensi dared to send Bruce a dismissal notice so directly and forcefully; he was simply acting with impunity. This psychology professor might be the biggest mastermind behind the scenes in Cat Getan, secretly manipulating all twelve gang families, and was the prime culprit behind the current chaotic situation in Cat Getan.

The more Shelden thought, the more reasonable it seemed. After all, Yin Wensi's astonishing resume looked nothing like something an ordinary person could have, and the fact that he could perfectly extricate himself from so many murders might also mean he had set up such a large net elsewhere.

Shelden felt he was gradually approaching the truth. Was he a single person? Or an organization? Who did he represent? What was he doing? What kind of result did he want to achieve?

Shelden's associations with these questions frightened himself.

In his logic, with the gangs of Cat Getan so rampant, it was still considered normal for a university professor to have connections with the gangs. Just like in this school, most teachers and professors were more or less related to the gangs, either having relatives or friends working in the gangs, or simply providing professional services to the gangs themselves in exchange for safety and some extra cash.

But this was not a reason for a professor to simultaneously contact the largest gang families in all of Cat Getan and participate in the Godfather's secret enterprises. The evidence that most firmly convinced Shelden of his own thoughts was the tone of Yin Wensi's voice on the phone, which was not like others who were both fearful and sycophantic toward the gangs.

His tone was always very calm, as if everything was under control. Shelden could tell that it was he who was dominating the gangs, not the gangs controlling him.

Shelden felt he had fallen into a huge trouble. Yin Wensi had the ability to influence Cat Getan's largest gangs, yet he still chose to continue teaching at Cat Getan University. It even seemed that he Places Great Emphasis On this position. From Shelden's perspective, since he had such great capabilities, why not buy a villa in Cat Getan's wealthy district? Why still squeeze into the faculty apartments of Cat Getan University?

There was only one possibility: staying at Cat Getan University was profitable for him, or rather, there must be something Shelden did not know that was attracting this mad professor.

Yes, in Shelden's view, Yin Wensi was a thoroughgoing madman.

Gangs were not some gentle quails, especially the largest ones in Cat Getan.

The sin of this city was almost overflowing, and everyone who had floated in this sea of sin for many years was almost dyed into evil itself. To stand at the crest of the waves in such an environment and become the top trendsetter of this dark city, and to cooperate with any of them, was no different than trying to skin a tiger.

But Yin Wensi not only cooperated with them, but cooperated with all of them simultaneously, or rather, he even tried to manipulate them.

Having just witnessed the ruthlessness of the gangs, Shelden naturally felt that Yin Wensi's behavior was insane.

This was like cutting the most fatal wire among hundreds or thousands of tangled wires; once cut incorrectly, this pack of flesh-eating, bloodthirsty jackals, accustomed to such things, would rush forward and swallow such a bold and reckless person completely.

Shelden began to regret it. Wasn't it better to just let Yin Wensi stay in Arkham Asylum? He had finally gotten him out; why on earth did he bring him back?

It was as if he had finally thrown out a time bomb, and somehow, personally picked it back up.

At this point, Shelden prayed frantically in his heart that Yin Wensi's tricks must not go wrong. If they did go wrong, they must not affect Cat Getan University; even if they did affect Cat Getan University, they must not affect him.

However, Shelden could reach his current position because he still had some quick wit. He knew this could not go on; he had to take action.

One morning, Yin Wensi proceeded to the archives as usual, planning to slack off while working and remotely controlling things at the same time.

But as soon as he arrived, he found that the files that had at least two-thirds remaining unfiled the day before had all been organized by someone. He checked with confusion and found that indeed all the work had been completed.

What is this situation? Is there a Sea Conch Miss?

However, since the work was all done, there was no need to stay here anymore. With a rather confused mood, Yin Wensi walked downstairs. As soon as he went down, he met President Shelden. Yin Wensi raised the coffee in his hand to greet him, but Shelden, with a dark face, said nothing and walked right past him.

Alright, Yin Wensi thought, it seems this president still does not like him. But he was used to it; after all, since he sent the dismissal notice to Bruce, this president had not given him any good looks.

But the only strange thing was that this president, who usually liked to dress himself up looking spirited and shining, looked haggard today and had two big dark circles under his eyes.
