Chapter 256: A Secret in Jiang Yuyue's Heart

~7 min read 1,362 words

In later generations, the Jiangzhou night market was extremely famous. One reason was its size, touted as the largest in the Northeast. Another was the food—a vast array of snacks; if you wanted to try them all, it would take at least eight days.

At this time, the Jiangzhou night market wasn't as large as it would be in later years, but its scale was still significant. Two-thirds of it was occupied by snacks, and as long as you had money, you could eat until you were stuffed.

"Damn it, these people from the Jiangzhou Distillery really aren't decent. They took what they took and ate what they ate, but they won't say a word." A thin, short young man, holding a skewer of lamb, cursed while eating.

Another young man wearing a black tank top and shorts, eating a piece of iron-plate squid with great relish, said, "I actually think the Jiangzhou Distillery doesn't have a marketing team at all."

"How is that possible!" the thin, short young man said. "The manager said that the Jiangzhou Distillery must have a very badass marketing team."

The young man in shorts said, "The manager isn't a god. On the contrary, I think Zhou Andong, the factory director of the Jiangzhou Distillery, is the real god. If they were hiring for sales, I'd definitely jump ship to join them."

The thin, short young man bit off a piece of meat from the lamb skewer and casually tossed the skewer onto the ground. "I really envy the benefits at the Jiangzhou Distillery. I don't know when we'll be able to catch up to them."

The young man in shorts said, "With the current inflation, everything is rising, and our wages will probably rise soon too. But by the time ours rise, the Jiangzhou Distillery's will definitely have risen again. The only way to catch up is if the Jiangzhou Distillery goes bankrupt."

The thin, short young man bit down fiercely on the lamb skewer. "That's not necessarily true. The heritage of our Moutai can't be compared to the Jiangzhou Distillery. Besides, I heard that our factory leadership is laying out a plan for the domestic market. Once they exert their strength, the Jiangzhou Distillery will definitely have to retreat. Once our sales open up, our wages will naturally get higher and higher."

The young man in shorts let out a laugh. "I hope so!"

Their conversation was heard in its entirety by Zhou Andong and Jiang Yuyue, who were following behind.

Jiang Yuyue held a grilled chicken wing and fed it to Zhou Andong's mouth, smiling sweetly. "Great Factory Director, you've been looked down upon."

Zhou Andong took a bite. "That thin, short guy has shallow vision and no potential for great development; he's probably destined to be a wage earner his whole life. The other one is the real talent; he knows I'm the real god."

Jiang Yuyue let out a light laugh. "I've discovered your skin is getting thicker and thicker."

Zhou Andong let out a chuckle. "There's soda for sale up ahead. Buy two bottles."

Jiang Yuping bought a few skewers of lamb and handed them to Kyle. "This is our Jiangzhou specialty barbecue. Try it; I guarantee you'll never forget it for the rest of your life."

Kyle took them excitedly, tasted the flavor, and nodded while giving a thumbs up. "OK, very delicious."

"Right!" Jiang Yuping was also very happy. "I remember there's a donkey meat fire-baked bun stall ahead. I don't know if they're still there this year. It's incredibly delicious. I'll take you to try it."

"Donkey meat?" Kyle's complexion changed slightly. "That... is it delicious?"

"Of course!" Jiang Yuping didn't notice the change in Kyle's expression and continued excitedly, "When I was little, I liked their donkey meat buns the most. Drink a mouthful of donkey meat soup, eat a piece of donkey intestine board, and it was heavenly."

In Kyle's mind, a donkey appeared, then was stewed for meat, and its intestines were sliced into segments and placed on a plate. Thinking about having to eat these things, his face turned pale instantly. He wanted to back out, but finally gritted his teeth and followed Jiang Yuping with a stiff upper lip.

"We're here, we're here!" Jiang Yuping said excitedly. "Right up ahead, there are so many people gathered around."

Jiang Yuping waited in line for quite a while before buying a bun and handing one to Kyle. "Try it, I guarantee you won't regret it."

Kyle took the bun, his throat bobbing. He seemed to have made a great determination, closed his eyes, and took a bite. Immediately, his eyes widened, and he began to chew carefully, the expression on his face changing from solemnity to enjoyment.

"Delicious..."

Before Jiang Yuping could finish her sentence, her smile froze instantly. A chill grew in the depths of her heart, making her shiver uncontrollably, and her teeth chattered incessantly. Her eyes were fixed on the crowd opposite, where Jiang Yuyue was holding a meat skewer, feeding Zhou Andong with a radiant smile.

"Ping..."

Kyle noticed that Jiang Yuping was acting a bit strange and called out to her softly. Seeing no response, he called out again and then pushed her.

"What's wrong with you?"

Jiang Yuping came back to her senses. She felt cold all over and was trembling slightly. Deep inside, she felt panic. "I... I suddenly feel a bit unwell. Sorry, Kyle, I can't accompany you anymore. I need to go back and rest."

Kyle asked with concern, "Do you want to go to the hospital?"

Jiang Yuping shook her head. "No need. I'll feel better after resting at home for a while. Let's go."

"Alright, alright, alright!" Kyle helped Jiang Yuping back, took a motorized tricycle, and returned to the guesthouse.

Kyle got off the tricycle. "Ping, do you need me to see you home?"

Jiang Yuping shook her head. "I'm fine, you don't need to worry."

"Alright then!" Kyle waved his hand. "Give me a call after you get home."

"Okay!" Jiang Yuping agreed. "Let's go, driver."

Jiang Yuping didn't go home. Instead, she stood by the side of the road outside the residential complex, waiting for Jiang Yuyue.

The night grew deeper. The crescent moon in the sky cast its light, stretching Jiang Yuping's shadow very long.

A wind blew from somewhere unknown, and Jiang Yuping felt colder and colder, her face turning pale.

In the distance, a yellow motorized tricycle sped over, then came to a screeching halt not far from Jiang Yuping. Jiang Yuyue got off the tricycle, humming a tune.

"Hey, Sis, why are you standing here?"

Jiang Yuping asked in a low voice, "Where did you go?"

Jiang Yuyue said, "I went to the night market."

Jiang Yuping suppressed her anger. "Who did you go with?"

Jiang Yuyue said, "I went with Yang Jinqiao."

"Slap!" Jiang Yuping dealt a heavy slap across Jiang Yuyue's face. Unable to suppress the anger in her heart any longer, she roared, "Liar! You were with Zhou Andong, weren't you?"

Jiang Yuyue never expected Jiang Yuping to hit her, but after hearing Jiang Yuping's words, she laughed—but the laugh was cold.

"Yes, I was with him. But so what? What right do you have to hit me? What qualifications do you have to hit me?"

Jiang Yuping was trembling all over with rage. "What right do I have to hit you? Because I am your sister, and because Zhou Andong is your former brother-in-law. You being with him doesn't just lose my face, it loses the face of our parents. Do you want everyone in our family to become the laughingstock of the neighborhood?"

The smile on Jiang Yuyue's face gradually faded. She looked at Jiang Yuping and said, "Do you know why I've always protected him all these years when he was being wronged in our family?"

Jiang Yuping was stunned, but she didn't speak.

Tears welled up in Jiang Yuyue's eyes and slid down. She slapped her own chest hard. "I knew him even earlier than you did. My life was saved by him. Although he has forgotten, I have not."
