Chapter 1108: Never Give Up On You
The emergency room door opened, and the doctor looked grave: "We are doing our best to save her, but the current situation requires surgery. This is the surgical consent form; please sign it."
Sheng Jiang took the form and read it line by line; the more he read, the more alarmed he became.
"No, we won't sign. Please save her, you must save her." The first line of the form indicated that the success rate of the surgery was very low.
Sheng Jiang's hands trembled as he refused to sign, nearly fainting.
Sheng Hanyu supported his father and asked the doctor: "If we don't operate, what are the chances of survival with conservative treatment?"
The doctor shook his head: "Basically no hope, unless a miracle occurs."
Miracles are hard to come by, and no one wants to gamble with a life.
"I'll sign."
The hand Sheng Hanyu used to hold the pen trembled slightly; he had signed all sorts of contracts, and he had only trembled twice in his life.
The first time was when Shi Youxuan went into the operating room years ago, and this was the second.
The handwriting was crooked, but at least the name was written.
The surgery was incredibly long, from dark until dawn; the children couldn't hold on any longer and fell asleep on the chairs in the hallway, some lying down, some sitting.
Nianyin went to Shi Youxuan: "Sister, I'll take the children back to sleep; it's useless for everyone to just wait here."
"No need."
Shi Youxuan shook her head: "You go back, but let the children stay."
She didn't state the reason, but she was mainly afraid that if the worst happened... the children wouldn't be able to see their grandmother one last time!
Her mother-in-law was a good person, a good person rarely seen among ten thousand.
Good people should be rewarded; she must let her get better!
Nianyin: "I'm not going back; I'll stay with you."
Shi Youxuan suddenly thought of something.
She said to Nianyin: "You must go back; you and Fang Jie go back together. In the innermost part of the kitchen safe, there is some Old Mountain Ginseng. Brew half a bowl of thick ginseng soup and bring it here."
"Okay."
Nianyin agreed and went back with Fang Jie to brew the ginseng soup.
The Old Mountain Ginseng was a Sixteen-Leaf Top-Grade specimen brought back from the Ji Family years ago. This ginseng had already saved lives several times; she didn't know if it would be used this time, but it was better to be prepared.
The east turned a fish-belly white, and the morning glow faintly appeared on the horizon.
It was almost dawn, but the surgery had not yet ended.
Sheng Jiang stood straight at the entrance of the operating room, his eyes fixed on the red light above the door, looking like a statue.
But his hair turned white at a speed visible to the naked eye.
The hair that had been graying was now completely white overnight!
"Dad, drink some milk." The bodyguard had bought breakfast, and Sheng Hanyu handed his father a cup of hot milk.
"I won't drink it." He shook his head slightly.
"You must drink it. Mom will definitely be safe after the surgery, but she will need someone to take care of her during her recovery. If you ruin your health, would you be at ease letting others take care of her?"
This worked; he was not at ease.
So Sheng Jiang took the milk and forced himself to drink it.
His throat felt as uncomfortable as if it were stuffed with cotton, making it very difficult to swallow.
"Cough, cough..."
He choked.
Sheng Hanyu patted his father's back and handed him a tissue.
The father and son suddenly felt a sense of relying on each other for survival; this feeling was very strange, something that hadn't existed even when Sheng Hanyu was a child.
Yet, in middle age, he would have such a feeling with his old father!
Only at this moment did the father and son realize how important Wang Yinghao's weight was in their hearts.
She had a good personality and could get along with anyone.
She seemed to be able to complement anyone; for so many years, she had basically never flushed with anger or had conflicts with others.
Even when she was wronged, she would endure it, and there were very few times she had arguments with people.
For many years, this household had been managed inside and out entirely by Wang Yinghao, keeping everything in perfect order. If she were gone in the future... the two of them dared not think about it.
They hadn't felt much usually, but only when she suddenly fell ill did they realize she was irreplaceable!
The sky was fully bright.
After a night of emergency rescue, the light above the operating room finally went out.
The doctor walked out and took off his mask; his eyes were filled with bloodshot red veins.
"Doctor, how is my mother?"
"She's fine, right?"
"Was the surgery very successful?"
Everyone's eyes shone with light, carrying hope.
They wanted so much to hear an affirmative answer, to hear the doctor say the surgery was very successful and that she only needed to recuperate for a while to be discharged and be just like before.
However, that was not the case.
The doctor shook his head: "I'm sorry, we really did our best."
"Impossible!"
Sheng Jiang roared: "What do you mean you did your best, huh? How is she, did you save her or not?"
He was very agitated, grabbing the doctor's collar with both hands and shaking him incessantly.
"Old sir, please don't be like this; go and see the patient for the last time!"
Sheng Jiang was pulled away by the crowd before he finally let go of the doctor, stumbling into the operating room to take one last look at his wife.
Her head was wrapped in gauze, and apart from the ventilator, all the various instruments connected to her body had been removed.
"A-Hao, A-Hao..."
Tears streamed down Sheng Jiang's face as he leaned over to his wife's ear and softly called her name, as if afraid that a louder voice would startle her.
"A-Hao, I told you before to go get checked out, but you never listened to me; you always said you were busy, said you were fine. You were good to everyone and listened to everyone, so why couldn't you listen to your husband?"
He grabbed his wife's hand and pressed it against his face, gently stroking it: "I said we should find a plot of land in the countryside, grow some vegetables, raise some flowers, feed a couple of chickens, and keep a dog. When we had nothing to do, we would just sit in the yard basking in the sun, and for meals, we'd just eat whatever, it would be enough; you wouldn't have to stay in the kitchen all day..."
"You clearly longed for it too, you liked it, yet you could never let go of this or that."
"You worried that your daughter-in-law was too careless and wouldn't look after the children properly, you worried that your grandson was mischievous and wouldn't change his clothes in time if he got them dirty, you worried that the whole family's diet wasn't balanced—you fretted over everything, but you never once thought of yourself..."
He rambled on, while behind him, there was a chorus of sighs.
That was right, this was the current state of the family.
All the trivial matters of the household were pressed onto her alone; others enjoyed all of this with peace of mind, only realizing how precious it was once it was lost.
Wang Yinghao's hand slid down silently.
Her breathing stopped.
The Hospital Ward was filled with the sound of weeping.
Sheng Hanyu did not cry, and Shi Youxuan did not cry either.
She dialed a voice number: "Is the ginseng soup ready?"
"I've arrived."
Nianyin appeared at the doorway.
"Wait a moment."
The nurse was just preparing to cover Wang Yinghao's face with a white sheet when Shi Youxuan stopped her.
She opened an insulated lunch box, which contained a shallow layer of orange-yellow ginseng soup at the bottom.
As the lunch box opened, the fragrance filled the room.
She said to her husband: "Pry open Mother's mouth, I will feed her."
Her husband actually went to do it.
The nurse was dumbfounded and tried to stop them: "She has already stopped breathing; there is no point in you doing this."
The two of them ignored her completely; Sheng Hanyu pinched his mother's mouth open, and Shi Youxuan used a spoon to carefully pour the ginseng soup in, bit by bit.
There were many people in the operating room, yet there was not a single sound; everyone's eyes were fixed on her movements, and the doctors and nurses felt it was nonsense—a person who had already stopped breathing could not possibly be brought back to life!
But the family members all hoped for a miracle to happen.
Even if the hope was slim, they could not give up as long as there was even a shred of hope.
