Chapter 1883: This is the Inheritance

~8 min read 1,478 words

Huo Zhenteng had not yet been discharged from the Hospital Ward when he was already swept out the door by his son and daughter-in-law.

This was not even the most miserable part for him.

Wang Qing arrived, crying and wailing at the hospital, and lay before her uncle's hospital bed to complain at length.

"Uncle, you've ruined me. I've been kicked out by Lao Jin and almost got beaten up. It's all your fault for being useless; you didn't get sick early or late, but had to fall ill at this exact time."

"Half of Lao Jin's fortune has gone down the drain, so he's taking all his resentment out on me..."

Lao Jin was the investor and also Wang Qing's lover.

Wang Qing ultimately could not resist the temptation; she only wanted to find a rich and generous man, regardless of whether he was married or had a wife.

Later, she met Lao Jin, and Lao Jin was generous with his money and kept Wang Qing as his mistress.

Huo Zhenteng met Lao Jin through Wang Qing, and with a glib tongue, he described the catering industry as a place where one could pick up gold everywhere.

Much of Lao Jin's money was not obtained through legitimate means, so he wanted to launder it through the catering business. If he had just opened a restaurant properly, even if business were a bit poor at the start, Lao Jin could have accepted it.

But he just had to go and pick a fight with Sheng Zichen, which ended up attracting the attention of a Lüshi and even dug up the boss behind him.

Only then did Lao Jin panic; his business was all illicit, so how could he handle being watched?

In a fit of shame and anger, he kicked Wang Qing out. Wang Qing had originally been promised marriage, but now she was suddenly dumped without any breakup fee. She had nowhere to go, and no matter how she thought about it, it was her uncle's fault, so she ran to the hospital to cry.

She only cared about her own grievances, completely ignoring that her uncle lying on the hospital bed was now unconscious and had become a vegetable.

Her aunt had never liked this niece; in the past, she couldn't say anything for the sake of her husband's face, and in the later years, she couldn't say anything because she was being supported by her niece.

But now, both were full of grievances; who was going to indulge whom?

She immediately retorted: "The man isn't dead yet, stop crying! You can cry when your uncle dies!"

"You heartless thing, since you were small, your uncle treated you better than his own son, yet he raised someone like you. You have nowhere to go and you blame your uncle? When he was helping you in the past, why didn't I see you complaining about him?"

Wang Qing was not the type to suffer in silence. Seeing her aunt glaring at her and making snide, aggressive remarks, she stopped crying immediately, darkened her face, and opened fire on her aunt with full force.

"I'm heartless? If it weren't for me these past few years, your whole family would have starved to death. Back then, you sold me to that monster and even helped me introduce rich men several times—was that really for my own good?"

"It was all for yourselves! If it weren't for you teaching me about money, money, money all day long, I could have graduated from the Film Academy and become a star—that would have been so much better than this ghost-like existence now, being a mistress or a lover, never able to see the light of day..."

"Pah!"

Her aunt spat a mouthful of saliva onto Wang Qing's face: "You shameless thing, only you would say such shameless words. You being a mistress or a lover is because you are shameless yourself; it has nothing to do with us."

"When you went to the Film Academy, if your uncle hadn't paid for your studies, would you have even gotten in?"

The two of them started arguing in the Hospital Ward, quarreling incessantly.

As they argued, their emotions became agitated and they actually started to fight.

Wang Qing was young and strong; she pushed her aunt, and the old woman lost her balance and fell backward, her flailing arms scraping against the IV drip, knocking the bottle to the floor.

In the panic, she accidentally pulled out the oxygen tube.

The two of them were so busy blaming each other that they didn't even know when Huo Zhenteng stopped breathing.

When the doctor arrived and discovered the patient had stopped breathing, only then did the two women burst into wailing tears.

Anyone who didn't know better would have really thought they were crying because they were heartbroken.

Huo Zhenteng's son and daughter-in-law returned, and their father had passed away in less than a day; there had to be an explanation for this.

They made a scene at the hospital, demanding the hospital take responsibility.

The hospital pulled up the surveillance footage and had the testimony of the family in the neighboring bed, only then discovering that Huo Zhenteng's death had nothing to do with the hospital; it was entirely the responsibility of his own family.

Huo Peng and his wife, of course, wouldn't do anything to his own mother, but they laid all the blame on Wang Qing.

Pay up? She had no money.

So they beat her up and kicked her out, not even letting her attend the funeral.

Upon learning the news of Huo Zhenteng's death, Sheng Zichen was somewhat surprised.

He died so quickly?

What happened?

He hesitated for a while, but still sent someone to deliver a generous gift and offer three sticks of incense.

They had known each other, and had fought for many years; regardless of who was right or wrong, when a person dies, the lamp goes out, and all grievances are concluded.

But he didn't let anyone use his own name, to avoid any complications!

Facts proved that Sheng Zichen's concerns were entirely necessary.

At Huo Zhenteng's funeral, there were not many people from the culinary world; he had more enemies than friends in this trade, and at his funeral, there were far more people there to watch the spectacle than people who were truly sad.

And the person he sent didn't take long to figure out the cause of Huo Zhenteng's death.

At the funeral, Huo Peng was still clamoring to go find Sheng Zichen to settle the score, his reasoning being: "My father went to the Phoenix Restaurant on the first day, and came back full of rage. It must have been Sheng Zichen who angered him, otherwise he wouldn't have slept until midnight and turned himself into a vegetable."

"If he hadn't gotten sick, he wouldn't have gone to the hospital, and if he hadn't gone to the hospital, none of the later things would have happened."

It must be said that Huo Peng's logic was quite strong, but his intelligence and methods were like clouds and mud compared to his father's!

Such a statement was met with ridicule from many people.

Everyone advised him not to go and make enemies; Sheng Zichen's current status was not something he could provoke, let alone the fact that it had nothing to do with him. If he really pursued it and more things were dug up, it would be bad, and he would be the one to suffer the consequences.

Even his mother advised him: "Son, don't learn from your father. Your father was much more capable than you, and he never won once when he was a rival to Sheng Zichen."

"Besides, this excuse is so far-fetched, you wouldn't even be able to withstand a single move from Sheng Zichen..."

She was mainly afraid of being implicated herself; if the matter blew up, it would be hard to clean up.

Huo Peng had lived his whole life under Huo Zhenteng's shadow and had almost no presence of his own.

The personality he gradually developed was also weak and incompetent; hearing his mother say this, he gave up on the idea.

The person Zichen sent returned and told him; Zichen smiled and said nothing, and didn't take it to heart.

There was no need to take it to heart; they were simply not people of the same weight class, so there was no need to care.

If he were to fuss over everything, wouldn't he be bored to death?

Huo Zhenteng is dead.

Lao Litou is in high spirits after encountering happy events, feeling incredibly joyful.

He invited Zichen to his home for a meal, intending to drink until they are both dead drunk.
