Chapter 997: Because of Love, Therefore Self-Degrading

~8 min read 1,535 words

Gu Zhihao wanted to go out to buy medicine, but there wasn't enough time—it was time to cook for his wife.

A woman in her postpartum confinement period must not be left hungry, so Gu Zhihao dragged his sick body to cook.

Chicken noodle soup.

When the noodles were placed in front of Shi Yuke, she didn't say anything, but she frowned.

The smell was fine, but the snow-white noodles were floating with a layer of yellowish chicken fat, which looked greasy.

In the past, when he cooked chicken soup, he would carefully skim off that layer of oil, then use ham to clarify the broth, making it look like plain boiled noodles but taste incredibly fresh and fragrant.

But today, he lacked the energy and forgot the steps.

"Eat it while it's hot."

He prepared to go out; he was sick and afraid of infecting his wife.

"Take it away, it's too greasy, I don't want to eat it."

Gu Zhihao's expression stalled; he remembered that in his daze just now, he hadn't skimmed the oil off the chicken soup, let alone clarified the broth.

"Alright, I'll make you another bowl. What else would you like to eat?"

In truth, he felt very unwell right now, as if his body were being roasted on a grill.

If Shi Yuke had glanced at him, she would have noticed the signs, but she didn't.

When Shi Yuke spoke, her head was turned to the side; she didn't even give him a glance from the corner of her eye!

"Don't make noodles anymore, just cook some white porridge and stir-fry two light side dishes. If there are winter bamboo shoots, make winter bamboo shoots with meat, and fried eggs with Chinese toon."

"Alright."

He agreed and went out.

Everything in front of him was already doubling, and his legs felt as heavy as a thousand catties!

He pinched himself hard, using the pain to stay awake.

He opened the refrigerator, and coincidentally, there were no bamboo shoots or Chinese toon.

Both of these required a trip to the market, so he took a vegetable basket and walked out the door.

"Little Hao, why is your complexion so poor? Are you alright?" the neighbor auntie noticed.

"I'm fine, just a bit of a cold."

The auntie reached out to test his forehead and shouted loudly: "Your forehead is hot enough to fry an egg, and you call this just a bit of a cold?"

Gu Zhihao told the truth: "My wife wants to eat winter bamboo shoots with meat and fried eggs with Chinese toon. It just so happens we don't have winter bamboo shoots or Chinese toon at home, so I'm going to the market to buy some."

The neighbors also knew that Shi Yuke was in her postpartum confinement at home.

The neighbor auntie volunteered: "It's just two vegetables, I'll go buy them for you. You go back and rest, look at you, you're swaying when you walk."

"Thank you, Auntie."

Gu Zhihao handed the money and the vegetable basket to the neighbor and turned back.

The vegetables were taken care of, but the white porridge still needed to be made.

He didn't rest; he put on a mask and disposable gloves, washed the rice, put it into a clay pot, and placed it on the stove.

He turned on the fire and collapsed into a chair, feeling dazed and extremely uncomfortable.

The fire quickly brought the water to a boil, the lid rattled, but Gu Zhihao didn't feel a thing.

The soup in the pot overflowed and extinguished the fire!

"Beep, beep, beep, beep—"

The fire alarm blared sharply.

The confinement nanny and Shi Yuke both ran out of the room to the kitchen to turn off the heat, only then avoiding a potential fire!

"What is wrong with you? How could you fall asleep in the kitchen?"

Shi Yuke noticed Gu Zhihao's complexion was wrong, and when she reached out to touch him, she found he was terrifyingly hot.

Just then, the neighbor auntie returned with the groceries. Seeing that Gu Zhihao had almost burned down the kitchen, she couldn't help but complain: "You really are something. It's fine to be good to your wife, but you can't throw your life away. How dangerous was today? If your house had burned down, we neighbors would have suffered too."

After complaining about Gu Zhihao, she complained that Shi Yuke was being pretentious, fickle, willful, and didn't know how to cherish people.

She acted as if she hadn't heard, neither arguing nor explaining, and certainly not agreeing.

The auntie noticed something was off: "Yuke, you've recovered to normal?"

"My goodness! This is truly a massive piece of good news."

After the auntie left, Shi Yuke knew without thinking that in less than half a day, the news of her recovered memory would spread throughout the entire residential complex.

By then, more neighbors would come to the house, under the guise of visiting, but actually to gawk at a curiosity.

Just thinking about this made her irritable, but she had no good solution.

She blamed all of this on her husband.

"Getting sick at such a bad time."

"Ma'am, the master is sick, you shouldn't blame him. He has already been very good to you. Men like the master are a rare species now; you should cherish him."

"I don't need you to teach me how to do things."

Although she said that, she didn't just ignore everything.

Shi Yuke helped Gu Zhihao to the guest room to rest, and he was still very guilty: "I'm sorry, I gave you a scare during your confinement. I'm really useless, I couldn't even cook porridge properly."

"Stop talking, just rest."

Shi Yuke returned to the room, took two fever reducers from the medicine kit for him to take, and went to the kitchen to cook porridge herself.

It wasn't that she couldn't do anything; in the past, in order to marry into a wealthy family, she had specifically taken a course in culinary arts. She just hadn't expected that the skills she had once been so proud of would now be used to cook dinner for such a man.

Opening the refrigerator, the things inside moved her deeply.

The food was divided into two major categories, and they were placed in different spots.

Fresh meat, live shrimp, sea cucumber, bird's nest, and pigeon eggs—all the high-end ingredients in the house were placed in the most conspicuous positions!

These were all things she usually ate, nothing unusual.

What was unusual was that next to these foods, there sat half a cold, hard steamed bun, a bowl of leftover vegetables, and a piece of pickled vegetable.

The maternity matron coaxed the child to sleep and also came down to help.

She saw Shi Yuke staring blankly at the refrigerator and provided the answer: "These are all things the master eats; the master is very frugal, eating leftovers himself and saving the good things for you."

Dinner was made by the maternity matron.

Claypot porridge, stir-fried pork with winter bamboo shoots, and fried eggs with Chinese toon.

These were all dishes she had ordered, but the taste was wrong when she ate them.

Disgusting.

Her palate and her appetite had both been spoiled by Gu Zhihao; she simply couldn't swallow food made by anyone else.

Shi Yuke took a few bites, set down her bowl and chopsticks, and went to the guest room to see her husband.

His health was good; after taking fever-reducing medicine, he had already fallen asleep, and his body temperature was no longer that high.

This was the first time in these past few days that Shi Yuke had seriously looked at her husband; he didn't look so bad when he was asleep.

His features were regular; it was just that his status was a bit inferior, otherwise he would be quite good!

However, those with high status had no sincerity toward her; it was all full of schemes and exploitation.

She sighed and then left the guest room.

The next day.

Gu Zhihao woke up feeling refreshed, and when he saw that it was already bright outside, he was greatly startled.

He had actually slept for the whole night?

Disheveled, he went to his wife's room: "Yuke, you must be very hungry, right? I'm truly damned for actually sleeping the whole night through. What do you want to eat? I'll go make it right away."

"No need for you to make it. How are you feeling? Are you any better?"

"I'm fine, I'm fine, there's nothing wrong at all. My body is very healthy; I'm as strong as an ox." For many days, this was the first time his wife had said so many words to him, and he felt somewhat flattered.

As if afraid his wife wouldn't believe him, he acted like a gorilla, thumping his chest with a "thump-thump" sound and making a funny face.

If it were before, Shi Yuke would have been amused into laughing out loud by him.

But today she wasn't; Shi Yuke looked at him as if he were an idiot, her face full of blatant disgust.

"Is this interesting?"
