Chapter 42: On the Conception of a New System
After Lei Kedun's a bit of nonsense, Tu Ba Ge the rabbit finally decided to read books and learn. This fellow rummaged through Lei Kedun's study and took a picture story album full of illustrations.
Its original words were: "Start learning from the simple."
Lei Kedun didn't intend to make it too hard; after all, when needed he could just have a hidden sage directly feed it knowledge.
Sitting on the ground flipping through the picture book, Tu Ba Ge suddenly felt a fright, jumped up in terror, looked around several times, confirmed no danger, then touched his head and sat down again.
"Kin of knowledge and wisdom, ancient guardian, eye that sees the world, sage seated in the sky, guardian of reason and knowledge."
Lei Kedun leaned on the windowsill and, in draconic language, recited the angel of the Knowledge Church's revered name.
"Ga!"
A crow whose head, wings, and legs bore patches of red feathers landed on the windowsill opposite Lei Kedun.
"Why are you chanting my name? I almost thought you ran into A Meng again!" the crow rasped.
"I recall you told me earlier that the whole Ma Dan City no longer has A Meng's avatars." Mentioning A Meng left Lei Kedun speechless.
"As He said, that's not an avatar, so He evaded my master's gaze." The crow also thought A Meng's actions were absurd, completely unexpected.
Lei Kedun was speechless for a moment; indeed that fellow had arrived long ago, just hidden, no wonder A Meng at that time only chatted with me without trying to parasitize or attack himself.
"What do you want from me?" the crow interrupted Lei Kedun's contemplation.
"I have some questions about the spirit realm; I can't find the right person, so I can only ask you," Lei Kedun replied simply.
"Spirit realm? Can't you just ask your captain or the bishop here?" the crow's tone was a bit disdainful.
"Probably, my question is a bit unconventional, and I think asking you is the best choice," Lei Kedun said politely.
"What question?" the crow was curious.
"Today I learned that some mutated creatures in that polluted zone rely on the spirit realm to use extraordinary abilities, so does one have to ingest demon elixirs to use extraordinary abilities?" Lei Kedun voiced his doubt.
"You could say that the demon elixir system is the most complete and mature, but as you said, not only those who have taken demon elixirs can use extraordinary abilities," the crow agreed.
"For example, some extraordinary beings become vengeful spirits after death; their extraordinary traits have already manifested, yet they can still use the extraordinary abilities of this path, though weaker than when alive," the crow gave an example.
"Vengeful spirits also depend on the spirit realm to use their pre‑death extraordinary abilities?" Lei Kedun asked confidently.
"Yes," the crow nodded.
Then continued: "Vengeful spirits, while alive, altered their soul structure by taking demon elixirs, which lets them sense the spirit realm after death, rely on it to continue existing, and use extraordinary abilities."
"If ordinary people formed such a link with the spirit realm, could they also use extraordinary abilities?" Lei Kedun probed.
"In theory, yes."
"But an ordinary person's body and soul cannot withstand the pollution the spirit realm brings; before they can wield enough power to lever the spirit realm, they will die untimely."
"The deepest connection an ordinary person can have with the spirit realm is spirit sight, but at that point their soul and body are already severely polluted and will die at any moment."
The crow explained in detail, sentence by sentence.
After hearing this, Lei Kedun felt his earlier ideas were too naive; if it were that easy for ordinary people to use extraordinary abilities, the Knowledge Church would have already discovered it.
"Why did you suddenly become interested in this?" the crow asked curiously.
"I just think it's a direction; if successful, it would be a system completely different from demon elixirs, though its ceiling can't match the elixir tier, it also avoids the runaway problem," Lei Kedun said.
"What is your idea?" Lei Kedun's answer piqued this angel's interest.
"By a special meditation method to build a stable link with the spirit realm, while improving one's body with potions made from extraordinary materials, gradually adapting to the influence of the link."
"If this link can be steadily strengthened, eventually one could lever the spirit realm's power to use extraordinary abilities."
Lei Kedun explained his previous concept piece by piece to the angel.
"Interesting idea, but that ties you too deeply to the spirit realm," the crow responded.
"After all, without extraordinary traits, you need another massive, stable existence to provide power, and the spirit realm is the best choice," Lei Kedun explained his reasoning.
"Good idea, but you need at least Sequence Six to Sequence Five before you can start research," the crow said, patting its wings.
"Why?" Lei Kedun was a bit puzzled.
"Because only when your foundation reaches the core ability of the Reader path can you truly understand extraordinary abilities and this world, making your idea possible," the crow's answer Lei Kedun didn't fully grasp.
In Lei Kedun's view, the Seeker of Secrets and the Reader, as the two branches under the Knowledge Wilderness, are the biggest confidence for him to construct a new extraordinary system.
"The Reader and the Seeker of Secrets are very similar, but they are not interchangeable paths. Do you know?" the crow continued, seeing Lei Kedun still didn't get it.
"I know," Lei Kedun nodded.
"The Seeker of Secrets path leans more toward mysterious knowledge itself, while the Reader path represents 'omniscience'—a conceptual symbol rather than mere knowledge," the crow explained the essential difference.
Lei Kedun swallowed, suspecting the angel's use of both paths indicated it already knew he possessed those traits.
The crow glanced at the now slightly nervous Lei Kedun, said nothing, and kept explaining.
"It leans toward a conceptual omniscience, the best choice for a breakthrough from zero to one. Relying on knowledge alone requires accumulating massive knowledge to reach a qualitative change."
"To realize your idea, the best choice is to obtain the blessing of my Lord who embodies omniscience."
Lei Kedun felt stunned, thinking he only asked a question, yet the crow suddenly told him to seek the blessing of the God of Knowledge.
"As an angel under the Throne, can't you represent the God's will?" Lei Kedun asked cautiously.
"The current Patriarch of the Knowledge Church can represent the God's will to some extent, I cannot," the crow said calmly.
Lei Kedun felt his eyes twitch, wondering what difference there is between standing before the current Patriarch of the Knowledge Church and before the God of Knowledge, and he certainly lacks the status to meet the current Patriarch.
"I'll pray once I have a mature idea!" Lei Kedun decided to temporarily abandon the thought.
"Wise choice; for you, the most important thing now is to ascend further," the crow agreed.
"When I need to ascend later, can I trade traits and demon elixir formulas with you?" Lei Kedun asked smoothly.
"Why does that sentence feel like your real purpose?" the crow said suspiciously.
"One purpose, after all, following the Church's process is easy at low sequences, but gets harder later," Lei Kedun said honestly.
"If you can give me satisfactory conditions, of course; you're the first to dare pitch the idea to a church angel," the crow's tone was rather odd.
"Well, for most people, getting to know an angel is no easier than finding a high‑sequence trait!" Lei Kedun thought his reasoning was normal.
After all, as an angel, its extraordinary traits are probably many! Having taken demon elixirs so many times, surely some times they use extraordinary traits as the main ingredient of the elixir.
