Chapter 56: Encounter with Werewolves (Vote Needed!!)

~8 min read 1,513 words

"This monster feels a bit strong but not really strong," Lei Kedun said, looking at the corpse on the ground and uttering a nonsensical remark.

"It's merely a monster mutated after being infected by a werewolf; it lacks extraordinary traits, instead strengthening its body by overdrawing life force and gaining some werewolf self‑healing ability," Mr. Ke Si explained.

"Roughly equivalent to somewhere between Sequence Nine and Sequence Eight," Mr. Ke Si added.

Lei Kedun felt he was being mocked; as a Sequence Eight, handling this monster alone was indeed very difficult.

Relying on his dual‑path advantage would certainly allow him to defeat the monster, but the process would likely be arduous. The swift resolution just now was mainly thanks to Mr. Ke Si's intervention.

"Mainly because the combination of Reader and Peeker is poor; strengths and weaknesses overlap too much," Lei Kedun muttered to himself.

"Should we keep looking around for other monsters?" Lei Kedun asked, looking at Mr. Ke Si.

Mr. Ke Si nodded: "Hmm, let's look again, but it's highly likely there are none."

Lei Kedun nodded and continued scanning the surroundings for any other possible monsters. This time Tu Ba Ge followed him step by step, no longer daring to wander off alone.

"I'm starving; did you hide any fruit in the hat?" Lei Kedun said, staring at the top hat on Tu Ba Ge's head.

The rabbit habitually hides items in the hat for magic tricks; previously Lei Kedun had pulled out a cup, salt, cold barbecue, and so on from it.

Tu Ba Ge looked up, face full of panic, at Lei Kedun, realizing he was serious. Reluctantly, he removed his hat and produced two pears and a handful of nuts.

"I only put these in," Tu Ba Ge said, placing the two pears into Lei Kedun's hand and then handing over a handful of nuts.

Lei Kedun couldn't suppress a twitch of his mouth; the rabbit truly exploited the seal object to the extreme—beyond the hat's inherent extraordinary effect, it could also store items.

"Keep the nuts for now; eating too many makes you thirsty. We'll each take a pear," Lei Kedun decided, sharing Tu Ba Ge's magic props.

As Lei Kedun and Tu Ba Ge, each with a pear, walked and nibbled while catching up to the forward‑moving Mr. Ke Si, Lei Kedun saw Mr. Ke Si's brows relax and jump.

"Where did you get those pears?" Mr. Ke Si asked, full of puzzlement.

"Tu Ba Ge's hat‑hidden magic props, plus some nuts. Mr. Ke Si, would you like some?" Lei Kedun said, biting the pear.

"No need," Mr. Ke Si shook his head, hastening his inspection of the surrounding graves and grass for any unusual movement.

By the time Lei Kedun and Mr. Ke Si had re‑checked the entire graveyard, noon had arrived. Lei Kedun gave half of the nuts to Mr. Ke Si, and the two left the graveyard while eating and chatting.

"Mr. Ke Si, how should we deal with the monster corpses in the graveyard?" Lei Kedun asked.

"Return and inform the church people to handle it; because of that werewolf‑infected monster, ordinary folk won't dare approach here for a while," Mr. Ke Si replied.

"We won't have to walk all the way back to the city, right?" Lei Kedun said, looking at the empty road with a hint of helplessness.

"If luck's on our side, we'll encounter a carriage on the road, but only when we're near the city; near this graveyard it's impossible," Mr. Ke Si said with some resignation.

"Sigh!" Lei Kedun exhaled, taking Tu Ba Ge, who had been perched on his shoulder, down. Carrying a fat rabbit all the way back to the city felt a bit unbearable.

"Wuwa~ you're abusing a small animal," Tu Ba Ge protested.

"You're too fat; you need to lose weight!" Lei Kedun said succinctly.

"But walking back like this will kill the rabbit," Tu Ba Ge continued protesting.

"In that case, any passing werewolf won't eat you; werewolves only eat fresh rabbits," Lei Kedun warned Tu Ba Ge.

"Werewolf!" Mr. Ke Si's tone suddenly turned serious.

"Mr. Ke Si, your timing is perfect; Tu Ba Ge is frozen with fear," Lei Kedun said, laughing at the rabbit clinging to his pant leg, refusing to move.

"Werewolf! It's across the way; be careful and try to take a detour back to the city," Mr. Ke Si said gravely.

Lei Kedun froze briefly, then realized. Rigidly looking up, he saw, less than a hundred meters ahead on the road, a middle‑aged man wrapped in a tall scarf, wearing a jet‑black top hat, dressed like a gentleman, staring intently at him and Mr. Ke Si.

The man bore numerous seemingly fatal wounds, especially his left eye, as if someone had gouged it out, with terrifying claw marks covering half his face, yet his injuries were healing rapidly.

His arms were abnormally swollen, gray short hairs sprouted on the backs of his hands, and his nails had become sharp and elongated.

"Werewolf transformation and injured? Did the captain cause this? Then why let him escape?" Lei Kedun's doubts piled up, while his body instinctively retreated slowly.

"I have no ill intent!" the opposing werewolf said first.

"A Rose School werewolf claiming he has no ill intent?" Mr. Ke Si said coldly.

"I didn't voluntarily join them, and they're now hunting me right behind you; you don't need to trust me, just stay back and let me leave," the werewolf said anxiously.

"Otherwise, when the Rose School members arrive, regardless of your relation to me, they'll also kill you on the spot," the werewolf added.

"This isn't the Southern Continent; this is Ma Dan, the junction of Lunbao!" Mr. Ke Si said, his words tinged with threat.

"But those lunatics don't care; my injuries are proof," the werewolf said disdainfully.

"He's right," Lei Kedun whispered to Mr. Ke Si.

Members of the Rose School's Indulgent Faction often don't consider such issues; when they were Sequence Eight, they were called lunatics.

"If what he says is true, letting him go would make the two of us block the pursuing troops behind him," Mr. Ke Si whispered back.

Mr. Ke Si's words made Lei Kedun instantly realize that, whether advancing or retreating, both he and Mr. Ke Si were in great danger.

In front stood a Rose School werewolf of uncertain faction—Indulgent or Temperate—and further ahead were Rose School pursuers; the outskirts graveyard behind was a base of one side.

"But we can't just stand here confronting each other; once the Rose School members arrive from behind, we'll be in grave danger," Lei Kedun said in a low voice.

"When that time comes, run along the side path as you come toward us, loop back; the captain already knows—just hold out until they arrive," Mr. Ke Si said while loading his handgun.

"What about you, Mr. Ke Si?" Lei Kedun felt a pang.

"Regardless of whether that werewolf's words are true or false, I must stay here to disrupt their situation. Rest assured, I have a seal object on me that can be used in combat," Mr. Ke Si grinned, reassuring Lei Kedun.

While Lei Kedun and Mr. Ke Si were conversing, the opposing werewolf seemed to sense danger and wildly ran toward them.

"Run," Mr. Ke Si said gravely.

He then raised his handgun and fired two shots at the two opponents—a regular bullet and a purification bullet.

The two opponents charged straight ahead without dodging; the purification bullet struck him, emitting a puff of black smoke. The werewolf snarled, veered aside, and kept charging.

A hundred meters took only five or six seconds at the werewolf's speed. After the charge, the werewolf abruptly slammed on the brakes and stopped.

"You talk too much; I couldn't help but step in front of you," a mocking, hoarse, malicious voice rang from not far behind.

Lei Kedun and Mr. Ke Si whirled around; at some point a person had already been standing behind them.

He wore a brown cowboy hat, a gray‑white long trench coat over a dark high‑collared sweater. His gaunt face bore emerald‑green eyes, and his whole visage seemed covered in stubble, giving a wild impression.

Lei Kedun recognized the man—the silhouette he had seen on the road yesterday returning home, which also seemed the source of his lingering unease.

"There's another Sequence Eight lunatic behind us; they stole my sealed item, an eye that lets its user merge into shadows, and it should be in that Sequence Eight lunatic's hands," the werewolf standing beside Rekton and Mr. K Si said in a deep voice.

While speaking, he also subconsciously reached out and touched the healed scar beneath his left eye.

The other's words reminded Rekton of the person he had met a few days earlier who seemed to be a hidden cultivator.

"Did I just happen to run into all of them in advance? This coincidence is even worse than the script of 0-08!" Rekton couldn't help but mutter sarcastically in his mind.
