Chapter 562: Middleman

~8 min read 1,549 words

Deep in the Spirit Realm, amid a brass-colored complex of many classical clock towers and stone pillars, a hazy light formed from countless tangled pieces of information surged forward, passing straight through walls and roofs; inside the library, it reconstituted Rekton's body from streams of massive pure knowledge.

As his form solidified, Rekton saw many semi-transparent rabbit-shaped spirits fluttering in the air around him, each cradling a book larger than its own body, passing them to one another.

Beside Rekton, Mr. Huang, still holding a steaming cup of coffee, appeared silently at his side, his warm gaze fixed on the busy Knowledge Rabbits, and he spoke calmly:

"Although they don't like to speak, they certainly liven the place, and with a little training they could fully take over my former duties."

Rekton looked thoughtfully at Mr. Huang; his appearance had not aroused any notice or caution, even though both were Sequence‑2 angels. All the work was left to the Knowledge Rabbits, and you just handle coffee and the newspaper each day?

Sensing the slight sarcasm sliding through Rekton's mind, Mr. Huang chuckled lightly and said:

"As the librarian, aren't some of my privileges here perfectly normal?"

After a silent nod, Rekton stopped dwelling on the topic and said, "I couldn't locate the third 'Knowledge Emperor' trait in the Divine Abandoned Land; has it been hidden?"

Mr. Huang, still holding his coffee cup, took two thoughtful steps forward and said:

"Few can fail to find it; perhaps you could consult the 'Hidden Mother'. In exchange, she will likely send you to Kaerde Long City to fetch some water from the River of Eternal Darkness."

Rekton shook his head and said:

"The River of Eternal Darkness signifies absolute, everlasting death—the end of all things. Ordinary matter cannot bear its waters; even a Sequence‑1 extraordinary trait would be tainted by it."

Mr. Huang halted, his gaze piercing through the library's layers of shelves and walls, looking deep into the Spirit Realm, a thick, icy silver veil settling over his eyes.

A moment later, his eyes cleared, and in an extremely calm tone he said, "Night has been scheming the remnants of Death; I can see that the Son of Death will reclaim himself at some point, and Night will likely seize the chance to obtain Death's uniqueness."

Rekton nodded in agreement, "Among the Seven Gods, Night is the most likely to become the old one."

He paused, then added, "But she probably wouldn't feel comfortable letting something so vital to her pass through my hands, just as the True Creator wouldn't let me touch the first Defiling Stone Tablet. Even if I don't need those items, they must guard against any covert meddling on my part."

Mr. Huang gave a slight nod, brushed past the topic, and asked, "What else brings you to me?"

Rekton awkwardly touched his nose and said, "I want the traits of a Prophet and a Seer; what must I give you in exchange?"

Mr. Huang was silent for two seconds before saying:

"If you can locate a trait of the same tier on an adjacent path, I can separate one for you, but only one. Traits from the White Tower path are in short supply; even the Church's internal demand is hard to meet."

Rekton nodded in understanding and asked, "May I purchase from you information on demigods or wondrous items from the White Tower path that lie outside the Church? If so, what price must I pay?"

Mr. Huang calmly shook his head and said:

"No price required; retrieving scattered traits is beneficial to the Church, and my lord does not mind the issue of ownership."

"The Storm Church and the Twilight Hermit Society each have their own Prophet; wondrous items on this path are few, most having been reclaimed by the churches through trade, with only portions from the Eternal Blazing Sun Church, the Earth Mother Church, and the Storm Lord Church remaining unrecovered."

After a one‑second pause, Mr. Huang looked at Rekton's thoughtful expression, smiled, and asked, "It seems you already have a plan?"

Rekton calmly nodded, "I will find a Dreamweaver trait to exchange for a Seer."

As the words faded, his body suddenly became ethereal, breaking into streams of massive pure knowledge that surged like a torrent, drilling out of the Spirit Realm.

Back in an inn in Conston City, Rekton glanced at the lunch and drinks left on the table by the inn's server, hurried over, pulled out a chair, and sat down.

Before he could set his utensils, a dense gray mist surged into his view, crimson light rose within it, coalescing into a vaguely seated figure on an armchair—black hair, red eyes, a demeanor both serious and carefree, appearing about twenty‑seven or twenty‑eight years old and strikingly handsome.

Emmlin White? Rekton instantly recognized the silhouette on the armchair, hesitated, then recalled the deal they'd discussed earlier, and couldn't help thinking, "Is your bloodline's recovery speed a bit too slow?"

As if answering his thought, Emmlin White's voice echoed beside him: "Esteemed Mr. Fool, please convey to Mr. White Tower that our bloodline agrees to his proposed trade; any traits he helped us recover from the Divine Abandoned Land will be purchased at market price, or exchanged for equivalent items." As Emmlin finished speaking, the crimson‑light figure instantly dissipated.

Klein's voice then echoed in his ear: "Do you wish to refuse?"

"No, confirm for me, I agree," Rekton shook his head lightly, then added, "Contact the Little Sun; I want their chief to hunt some vampires for me, preferably at demigod level. I'll pay a suitable price and also arrange to help them gather the Black Knight's alchemical formula."

Above the gray mist, Klein, seated on a high‑back chair, twitched the corner of his mouth and silently muttered in his mind: "Using information asymmetry as a middleman. Why didn't I think of this before? Indeed, I'm still too kind."

After a moment of silence, he replied simply with "Good" and then cut off contact with Rekton.

Inside the inn, Rekton finished the provided lunch, rested briefly, and then left.

In the fountain plaza before the Cloud Mist Cathedral, most tourists and residents were still dining, so although there were many people, it wasn't crowded.

Rekton walked across the gray‑white marble floor painted with waves and ships, feeling oddly that despite his worst relationship with the Storm Church, he visited the Storm Temple more often than any place except the Knowledge Temple.

While sighing, he spotted Sean gauging the passersby beside the fountain; he chuckled, approached from behind, and patted Sean's head, saying, "You arrived early; have you had lunch?"

Sean, turning his head downward, complained, "Don't pat my head; I'll never grow tall!"

"Are you worried I'll take the money and leave? I'm not that kind of person; we of the sea keep our promises."

Rekton looked at the solemn Sean and couldn't resist teasing, "Didn't your father tell you that on the vast sea, the greatest threat to guard against is people?"

For the rest of the afternoon, Rekton toured the festival under Sean's guidance; though he didn't partake directly, he sensed the crowd's emotions and felt his own condition improve little by little.

No wonder each church has its own holiday; it's not only a rare leisure time for people but also deepens the gods' anchors, allowing their suppressed emotions to relax.

While sighing, a Knowledge Rabbit wearing a gray‑blue vest emerged from the Spirit Realm.

On its left chest was a bright‑eyed rabbit motif; it cradled a dark leather briefcase and an iron‑gray metal box in its hands.

Rekton's gaze swept over the briefcase and metal box, seeing neatly stacked banknotes and the extraordinary Black Knight trait inside. Such speed—did Sasilier separate a trait on the spot?

The Knowledge Rabbit hopped, handing the leather briefcase and metal box to Rekton while saying in a youthful voice:

"Postage, three pounds, or a piece of occult knowledge."

Muttering to himself about paying on delivery for his own mail, Rekton lowered his eyes, stars flickering within them, reflecting a brilliant galaxy.

As he locked eyes with the Knowledge Rabbit, the stars in his gaze reflected into the rabbit's eyes, and knowledge was gradually infused into the rabbit's mind.

The process didn't last long; to onlookers, Rekton simply stopped abruptly, staring intently at the spot before him for a moment.

Except for Sean, his youthful face was filled with shock, eyes wide as he stared at the rabbit's location, emotions of excitement, curiosity, doubt, and fear flickering across his features.

Only after the Knowledge Rabbit left did he slowly regain his composure, his curious gaze turning to Rekton, his excitement rendering his words incoherent:

"Is it a rabbit? What was that just now? It, and you."

Rekton raised his left index finger to his lips in a shushing gesture; Sean immediately understood, covering his own mouth and nodding lightly at Rekton, as if saying, "I'll keep it secret for you!"

Rekton chuckled softly, "It's called the Knowledge Rabbit, a postman of the mysterious world."

"You possess a small amount of traits inherited from your parents, making you half an extraordinary being, which lets you see it; if you master the proper ritual, you can summon it as well."
