Chapter 58: Harvest and Unexpected (Vote for Me!!)
The fight with that madman of the Rose School turned out unexpectedly smoothly, and it made Lei Keton realize the importance of preparing before battle and how crucial a reliable teammate is when one is of a low sequence.
"Even if that teammate is just a rabbit!" Lei Keton thought to himself.
Since they had already run a considerable distance with Tu Ba Ge, temporarily far from the other side's werewolf battlefield, as long as the werewolves didn't come this way Lei Keton felt fairly safe and calmly waited in place for the trait to manifest.
"Boss, aren't we running away? Isn't there another werewolf behind us?" Tu Ba Ge asked anxiously.
"Wait a moment; once the extraordinary trait manifests, we'll leave," Lei Keton said.
"The extraordinary trait manifests?" Tu Ba Ge indicated the rabbit didn't understand.
"It's the magic elixir you drink; after an extraordinary being dies, it will manifest as a trait, which can serve as the primary material for a magic elixir of the corresponding sequence," Lei Keton explained the concept of extraordinary traits to Tu Ba Ge.
"So if a rabbit dies, will it manifest an extraordinary trait?" Tu Ba Ge asked curiously.
"Rabbits won't," Lei Keton said after seeing Tu Ba Ge relax, "but a rabbit like you who has taken the magic elixir will."
"Whoa! I'm awesome, I even defeated that terrifying Sequence Eight," Tu Ba Ge shouted, feigning composure.
"Above Sequence Eight there are also Sequence Seven and Sequence Six!" Lei Keton gave the rabbit a tap.
"Boss, you can definitely beat them," Tu Ba Ge cast hopeful eyes toward Lei Keton.
"I can't beat them," Lei Keton said, speechless.
While Lei Keton and Tu Ba Ge were chatting, the dead madman's body already began emitting specks of light, which started gathering at the chest.
Tu Ba Ge stared intently at the wondrous scene. After about two or three minutes, all the light points converged, and no more light specks emitted from the corpse.
The gathered light points finally formed a gray‑white orb resembling a miniature brain.
Lei Keton took out the iron small box that held his bullets, removed the remaining bullets, placed this extraordinary trait into it, and then applied a layer of spiritual wall onto the iron box.
After acquiring the extraordinary trait, Lei Keton focused on the corpse's eyes. From the earlier werewolf's description and behavior, that seal that enables the use of a hidden cultivator's ability should be installed in one's own eyes.
Lei Keton used the Secret-Viewing Eye to scrutinize the corpse's eyes, discovering that the left eye turned into a dense, substance‑like shadow under the eye's gaze.
Lei Keton confirmed this was the seal. He drew his pocket dagger and removed the corpse's left eye.
Once detached, the left eye automatically turned into a pitch‑black glass orb, feeling a bit like a sponge ball—easily compressible and deformable, yet instantly regaining its shape.
However, Lei Keton no longer had an extra iron box to store the seal, so he simply slipped it into his pocket; fortunately, merely carrying the seal without using it does not produce any adverse effects.
"Let's go!" After securing the trait and the seal, Lei Keton called out to Tu Ba Ge, ready to depart.
"Got it, boss!" Hearing they could leave, Tu Ba Ge instantly leapt up from the ground.
Lei Keton led Tu Ba Ge away from the spot, hurrying toward the city. After they left, a pitch‑black crow flapped its wings and flew away from a nearby tree.
Having walked a short distance, Lei Keton glanced back, only seeing a crow flying toward the horizon, with nothing unusual.
Feeling uneasy, Lei Keton used the Secret-Viewing Eye to scan the battlefield again, and likewise found nothing abnormal.
"What's wrong, boss?" Tu Ba Ge grew nervous when Lei Keton suddenly stopped to examine the area again.
Lei Keton shook his head; under the Secret-Viewing Eye's scrutiny he found no issues, which eased his mind a bit.
"Let's go! We should hurry and try to meet up with the captain and the others," Lei Keton patted the rabbit's head and said.
The recent inspiration disturbance left Lei Keton uneasy; although the Secret-Viewing Eye detected nothing, something had indeed stirred his spiritual sense.
Just like when he returned home yesterday, his spiritual perception was triggered, yet the Secret-Viewing Eye found nothing. Lei Keton worried that something might be able to evade his eye's detection.
As Lei Keton and Tu Ba Ge hurried forward, a bird would occasionally fly around them, but the forward‑focused Lei Keton didn't notice.
When Lei Keton and Tu Ba Ge, panting, finally returned to the city, it was already late afternoon, nearing evening.
"I don't get why the cemetery was built so far away—leaving such a distance to develop the city?" Lei Keton said, out of breath.
"The rabbit doesn't understand either." After rushing for so long, even an extraordinary rabbit was getting weary.
Lei Keton hailed a carriage by the roadside and headed to the Executor Squad.
"I hope the squad office still has someone; Teacher Kesi said the captain and the others already know, but why haven't I encountered anyone all along?" Reflecting on the day's events, Lei Keton felt uneasy.
Lei Keton couldn't determine whether Mr. Kesi together with that unknown werewolf could block the Rose School's werewolf, whose presence was clearly more imposing.
"Boss, how strong are the werewolves?" Tu Ba Ge, who had been lying on the carriage, clearly regained vigor.
"Roughly, they could swipe us away with a single claw," Lei Keton used a very plain analogy.
"It has two claws, so wouldn't it be able to swipe both of us away at once?" Tu Ba Ge said in surprise.
Lei Keton was momentarily speechless, but after careful thought he realized he couldn't refute the rabbit's point. Facing that werewolf head‑on, the gap between them truly boiled down to a single claw.
Although martial scholars gain bonuses in close‑quarters combat, those bonuses mainly affect fighting techniques rather than raw physical strength. Against a werewolf whose claws rival extraordinary weapons of the same sequence, they are utterly ineffective.
After racing by carriage to the Executor Squad, Lei Keton found only Joseph in the office.
"Huh? Lei Keton! Why did you come back alone? Where are the captain and Mr. Kesi?" Joseph asked the question before Lei Keton could.
"What's going on? I didn't see the captain on my way back. I was about to ask where the captain is; Mr. Kesi's situation doesn't look good," Lei Keton said, a bit confused.
"The captain said you and Mr. Kesi were in danger, so he went to support you?" Joseph was also stunned.
"Boss, where are we heading next?" Tu Ba Ge asked, shaking his head.
"Let's leave the city first; regardless of the captain's situation, Mr. Kesi needs assistance," Lei Keton said after a moment's thought.
"I'll go with you as well," Joseph also stood up.
"Won't we be swiped away by a werewolf's single claw?" Tu Ba Ge said, a bit fearful.
"Someone needs to stay behind in the office; when Ms. Xiya or the captain returns, remember to inform them of the situation. I have to hurry back," Lei Keton said, pulling Tu Ba Ge out without waiting for Joseph's objection.
Joseph opened his mouth to speak, but Lei Keton had already left the office with Tu Ba Ge. Joseph hesitated in the office for a long time, yet never followed.
Joseph comforted himself internally: as Lei Keton said, he's now the sole guard in the office; he can't abandon this place, and with his Sequence Nine strength he can't be much help—going might even be a hindrance.
Joseph thought that once this matter passed, he should urge the captain, as he needs to quickly raise his sequence.
