Chapter 73: News of the Profane Card
Even though I don't want to tell the Knowledge Wilderness why they need the Profane Card, as an honest, dutiful worker Lei Ke Dun can only find a way to complete the task. Of course, I have to wait until my strength reaches at least demi‑god level.
"I have no clue about the Perfecter Card, but the Wheel of Fate Card is clear—it's in Bei Erna Dai's hands, and the Hermit Card is most likely also with Bei Erna Dai; an old father must leave his daughter a decent inheritance," Lei Ke Dun mutters, recalling the information he knows and speculating.
"But I always feel the Profane Card is unlikely to be in the True God Church's hands; that's a scenario Luo Sai Er doesn't want to see, so the Perfecter Card might still have a chance," Lei Ke Dun thinks.
"The clearest target: Bei Erna Dai! The chance of obtaining the Profane Card from her is the highest; I can trade Luo Sai Er's information with her," Lei Ke Dun sets his first goal.
Thinking of Bei Erna Dai, a dangerous idea he can't suppress pops into Lei Ke Dun's mind: reciting her old father's diary to Bei Erna Dai in front of Luo Sai Er.
"If I actually do that, will Luo Sai Er instantly resurrect and hunt me down?" Lei Ke Dun thinks the probability is high, yet the dangerous thought keeps bouncing around, impossible to suppress.
"Boss, what are you muttering to yourself?" Beng Da asks from the tabletop in front of Lei Ke Dun.
Tu Ba Ge watches Lei Ke Dun finish the oddly colored demon elixir, then stares with a strange expression, and starts mumbling incomprehensible rabbit‑language, worrying that his boss might be losing control.
"Nothing, just thinking about the plan to leave Fei Nei Bo Te later," Lei Ke Dun replies.
"Awo awo! Boss, have you already completed the promotion? Then can you now learn all kinds of spells?" Tu Ba Ge asks curiously.
"Yes, I gained the talent for learning and using spells, and also mastered some spells that come with the promotion," Lei Ke Dun nods.
The Seer's Sequence Seven, besides strengthening the abilities of previous sequences, mainly grants a talent for casting spells and some accompanying spells. It has no exclusive extraordinary ability, but the range of usable powers is comprehensive; the more knowledge one masters, the more complete and powerful one becomes.
"So should we prepare the casting materials you mentioned, Boss?" Tu Ba Ge, always curious about Lei Ke Dun's spell descriptions, asks.
"Well, no rush; the extraordinary materials I applied for from the church these two times can also be used," Lei Ke Dun explains.
Tu Ba Ge doesn't fully understand, but nods; it's only interested in casting and wants the boss to teach it, nothing else matters.
"You all seem in good spirits; are you preparing for an exam?" the church angel's raven avatar suddenly appears in the room.
"Hm?" Lei Ke Dun is startled; this angel always appears out of nowhere, and now its speech is becoming increasingly incomprehensible.
"Boss! Were you caught cheating this morning?" Tu Ba Ge looks at Lei Ke Dun sincerely and asks.
Lei Ke Dun's face darkens a bit; he feels the rabbit is deliberately bringing up his morning cheating now.
"Cheating?" the raven gazes at Lei Ke Dun.
"What do you mean by preparing for an exam?" Lei Ke Dun, with an unchanged expression, changes the subject.
"It's the exam you owe from advancing from Sequence Nine to Sequence Seven," the raven explains.
After the raven finishes explaining, Lei Ke Dun's face darkens further; he understands why the captain said he couldn't bluff his way through. In front of a Wise Angel, there's no need to cheat, even if the raven is merely the angel's avatar.
"So you're the proctor?" Though he has guessed it, Lei Ke Dun persists in asking.
"Of course. Besides me serving as your proctor, who else could stop you from cheating via a Hidden Sage?" the raven says bluntly.
Lei Ke Dun twitches his mouth; he hasn't even done that, yet the mere thought lingering in his mind was mercilessly suppressed by the other.
Lei Ke Dun suspects that this church angel used a prophet's foresight regarding his exam.
"No prophecy needed; your thoughts and actions are obvious," the angel's raven avatar has already seen through Lei Ke Dun's mind.
"That's even more underhanded than prophecy! That's the 'Insight' of Sequence Three, right?" Lei Ke Dun says confidently.
In the Reader Path, Sequence Three's "Insightful Ones" perceive the world's rules and have mastered many deep mysteries. Before an extraordinary being of this sequence, secrets are hard to keep.
The other can fully analyze behavior through understanding oneself, achieving predictive ability—just as this raven demonstrates now.
"You know this path well! Even the 'Insight'—that's one of the core abilities of the White Tower Path," the raven gazes at Lei Ke Dun until his scalp tingles, then looks away.
"One of the core abilities? What are the other core abilities?" Lei Ke Dun asks curiously.
"You'll know after you promote to the corresponding sequence," the raven does not give a clear answer.
"What are you joking about! Could I ever reach that level? Sequence Three's Insightful Ones are already the limit of this path; switching paths won't help," Lei Ke Dun says speechlessly.
The All‑Knowing, All‑Powerful Five Paths each have a True God occupying them; the Sequence Two angels are the leaders of their respective churches or organizations, and without being bound to a mortal's war chariot, there's essentially no chance to obtain them.
In contrast, the Gou San Family's path is much better; with luck one might even scrape into Sequence One.
"You do know a lot!" the raven says with a sigh.
Lei Ke Dun freezes for a moment, then realizes the other seems able to read his inner sarcasm.
"In front of a Reader Path angel, it's truly hard to keep secrets, even if it's just an avatar," Lei Ke Dun muses internally.
However, more than having his sarcasm exposed, Lei Ke Dun worries his personality seems to have changed unnoticed. If it's caused by the demon elixir or contamination from the Knowledge Wilderness, that's serious.
"No need to worry; this isn't the demon elixir's effect, otherwise I'd have warned you," the raven's words give Lei Ke Dun a reassuring boost.
"If you care about this issue, become a Wise Angel, and you'll be able to detect subtle changes in yourself and adjust them," the raven adds.
"Wise Angel? Such an ability exists?" Lei Ke Dun says in disbelief, looking at the raven before him.
"The 'wisdom' of a Wise Angel can manifest in many ways," the raven offers no further explanation.
On the nearby tabletop, Tu Ba Ge is already a seasoned dead‑weight; as long as the boss talks to the raven, it remains in a daze, unable to comprehend a single word.
"I see!" Lei Ke Dun doesn't pursue the topic further, but asks another question: "Do you know the Perfecter Card within the Profane Card?"
"Profane Card? You shouldn't need a demon elixir formula, and it's also of the Perfecter Path," the raven says, puzzled.
"I want to collect the Profane Card," Lei Ke Dun says, voicing a thought he had, without revealing the Knowledge Wilderness mission.
"I don't know where that Profane Card is, but I know it's not in the Steam Church," the angel boss says; although he also lacks the card's whereabouts, he confirms Lei Ke Dun's earlier guess.
"However, I do know where the White Tower and Hanged Man Profane Cards are," the raven adds.
Hearing this, Lei Ke Dun eyes the raven skeptically, trying to read any clue from its expression.
"You don't mean they're with you, right? Or the Knowledge Church?" Lei Ke Dun asks curiously.
"The White Tower Card is indeed with me, and the Hanged Man Card is with an ancient dragon that survived from the Twin Age of the Second Era," the raven answers plainly.
Lei Ke Dun blinks, hardly believing that the angel boss just handed him the Profane Card's information directly.
"What good is knowing? Can you take the Profane Card from my hand or that ancient dragon's?" the angel boss reads Lei Ke Dun's thought and says indifferently.
