Chapter 82: Just Call This the Title

~7 min read 1,351 words

In the two days since his father returned, Lei Kedun's life hasn't changed much; basically only at meals does the family sit together. At other times, his father and mother are stuck together, or they go out to visit friends and relatives.

Lei Kedun has no interest in such socializing, but thanks to his cooperation with the Earth Church as an excuse, he doesn't have to follow his father around visiting relatives and attending various parties.

"Boss, didn't you say you were going to start the hybrid experiment? Why are you staying in your room all the time!" Tu Ba Ge, who had just finished watering the nutrient solution for his own plants, asked curiously.

"Haven't you already started? I'm not an Extraordinary of the Farmer Path, I'm not good at this, so I have to hand it over to you." Lei Kedun patted the hat on Tu Ba Ge's head and explained.

"Ah!" Tu Ba Ge stared blankly at Lei Kedun.

It felt like the boss had trapped it again; clearly it was the boss's own business, yet all the work fell on it.

"Then what are you doing, boss?" Tu Ba Ge said with a hurt voice.

"I'm creating a new spell that will be placed in the library deep within the spirit realm; I want to see if it can help me digest the demon elixir, and then you can learn it too." Lei Kedun explained, giving Tu Ba Ge a grand promise.

"I can learn it too!" Tu Ba Ge's eyes lit up, suddenly feeling that being coaxed by the boss to work wasn't so bad.

"Sure, even though it lacks the talent boost from the appropriate path's demon elixir, once you grasp the principle, an Extraordinary can still learn it easily." Lei Kedun nodded.

"Boss, how long will it take you to create this spell?" Tu Ba Ge asked impatiently.

"Just these two days; using those materials for the experiment will make casting more convenient." Lei Kedun said, recalling his progress.

Then he turned to Tu Ba Ge and asked, "How are the grafted branches? Are they growing normally?"

"I don't know either; they haven't grown together yet. When two different plants are grafted, they tend to reject each other," Tu Ba Ge said, shaking his head.

After pondering for a moment, Lei Kedun said, "Let's go to the Earth Church and ask an Extraordinary for help to speed up the research. First we confirm the results, then gradually reduce the influence of Extraordinary factors in the process."

"Exactly! Exactly!" Tu Ba Ge strongly agreed with his boss's idea.

It even felt this should have been done long ago; the unscrupulous boss throws everything onto a single rabbit, which is too much to ask of the rabbit.

Lei Kedun took Tu Ba Ge and a potted plant used for the grafting experiment to the Earth Church.

Originally, Lei Kedun wanted Wu Se Er to help him; as a Harvest Priest, he could easily graft the two plants together.

But Wu Se Er, after hearing the proposal, declined, believing that using Extraordinary abilities to directly graft the plants would make it impossible to determine whether they truly possess graftable traits.

In the end, Wu Se Er found a new assistant for Lei Kedun. Lei Kedun almost couldn't suppress a smile when he saw the person.

"What kind of look is that! You're very impolite, you know!" Vampire Ya Si, dressed in a clerical linen robe, said with a clenched‑tooth expression.

"No, just curious—you're my experimental assistant?" Lei Kedun said, trying to keep his smile in check.

"Exactly! I can't understand how the Earth Church would let me, a noble vampire, be an assistant to a rookie like you." Ya Si said arrogantly.

"A regular adult vampire is roughly a Seventh‑Tier Extraordinary; if I'm a rookie, aren't you one too?" Lei Kedun shrugged nonchalantly.

"You're Seventh Tier?" Ya Si looked incredulous.

"Will there be further ranking?" Lei Kedun, thinking of the vampire promotion system, couldn't help teasing Ya Si.

"Ahem! What do you need me to do? In plant research, I'm certainly not as good as an Extraordinary of the Farmer Path; I'm good at concocting potions," Ya Si cleared his throat, shifting the awkward vampire topic.

"Hmm, can you brew a potion for plants? The kind that promotes growth and rooting," Lei Kedun asked.

Ya Si looked puzzled; if Lei Kedun hadn't worn such a solemn expression, he would have suspected the other was deliberately teasing him.

"Can't you just buy it from the Earth Church? Or ask a Harvest Priest to catalyze the plant's growth; this is what the Farmer Path excels at," Ya Si said, sounding a bit doubtful.

"I want to avoid the influence of Extraordinary abilities; I need crops that can be cultivated on a large scale by ordinary people," Lei Kedun explained.

Ya Si stared blankly at Lei Kedun; despite being a well‑versed vampire, he felt his insight was insufficient, especially now, unable to grasp Lei Kedun's odd idea.

"People from the Knowledge Church are absurd in research, but this guy in front of me is even more so!" Ya Si thought of a perfectly reasonable self‑justifying explanation.

"Is there a place nearby where we can sit and rest? This topic won't be finished in a short time," Lei Kedun said, breaking the silence as Ya Si still stared blankly.

"Oh, there is. You and I, let's go," Ya Si said, nodding as he came to his senses.

He then turned, leading Lei Kedun to the clergy's resting area behind the chapel, finding a secluded corner to sit.

Lei Kedun and Ya Si discussed in detail his current grafting experiment ideas and the problems he faced.

Ya Si went from confusion at the start to being stunned, and even after Lei Kedun finished, Ya Si hadn't recovered his composure.

"Did you understand? Do you need me to go over it in detail again?" Lei Kedun asked the still‑dazed vampire opposite him.

"Huh? No need, I get it, but what's the point? Can't we just plant them directly? Grafting different plants together seems completely unnecessary," Ya Si said, bewildered.

"If suitable, grafting combines the advantages of two different plants, saving a lot of time and cost compared to breeding a new variety from scratch, and for seedless plants it also makes scaling up easier, right?" Lei Kedun explained his reasoning.

After a conflicted pause, Ya Si said, "Are you sure the Earth Church will approve this? Don't you think this idea goes against the so‑called natural law of life the Earth Church upholds?"

"If it succeeds, it doesn't violate the natural law of life's gestation!" Archbishop Ai Xi Mi Ya walked over and said.

"Huh? Why?" Ya Si looked at the Harvest Chapel's archbishop in disbelief.

"If it can succeed, it shows that this form of life conforms to natural law," Archbishop Ai Xi Mi Ya explained.

"As long as it helps the Church spread its faith, it isn't a violation; even if it were, the Earth Mother could alter that natural law," Lei Kedun added in his mind.

Archbishop Ai Xi Mi Ya turned his gaze, his eyes gentle and smiling at Lei Kedun, seeming pleased with the discussion between Lei Kedun and Ya Si.

"Indeed, this saves far more time and cost than breeding a new variety from scratch. I expected we'd have to wait a long time for results, but you came up with a new idea so quickly," Archbishop Ai Xi Mi Ya said warmly, praising Lei Kedun.

"I'll have the Church quickly gather enough plant samples, and I'll assign a few more assistants to help you cultivate the grafted plants, so you won't have to keep making that rabbit work," Archbishop Ai Xi Mi Ya said, glancing at Tu Ba Ge perched on Lei Kedun's shoulder.

Tu Ba Ge excitedly nodded at Archbishop Ai Xi Mi Ya, casting a grateful look.

Lei Kedun was slightly stunned, feeling that his exploiting a rabbit for labor was now known worldwide.
