Chapter 80: Chapter Three: This Is How We Drive Away Ghosts

~9 min read 1,734 words

"What's there to panic about? Stand still and tell me clearly what's going on." Fan Wuchang furrowed his brow, speaking coldly.

Although his tone was calm, it scared the red-haired youth so much his body trembled; he swallowed saliva and stammered: "Brother Chao... he... he got into trouble."

Fan Wuchang furrowed his brows and slipped both hands into his pants pockets.

"Get in the car, let's go see what's going on."

Having said that, he walked out toward the doorway.

I, Pangzi, and Yuan Qiu followed behind him and got into that Audi.

As the car started, the rear also simultaneously emitted the sound of the car engine starting; I looked back and saw two Toyotas following behind Fan Wuchang. At first I thought they were coming to tail Fan Wuchang, but later I realized they were his lackeys.

"Tell me, what's going on, how did Little Chao get possessed by a ghost?" Fan Wuchang asked the red-haired youth while driving.

The red-haired youth's name was A Fa; seeing Fan Wuchang ask him, he didn't dare hesitate and quickly recounted the whole story.

Because Fan Wuchang had the window open, and A Fa's accent sounded like Hakka dialect, we didn't hear the details clearly; we only roughly knew that someone had been possessed by a ghost.

The Audi slowly pulled up beside a duplex building, and Fan Wuchang was the first to open the car door and get out.

We followed him to the third floor of the building; a few lackeys went ahead and knocked open the door.

Inside the house stood several people in suits; in the middle was a chair, on which a shirtless muscular man was tied.

"How's the situation with the lecherous Chao?" Fan Wuchang asked the few men in suits nearby.

"Is he possessed by a spirit?" Pangzi blurted out.

I and Pangzi were about to ask if he wanted help, but just then Fan Wuchang stamped his foot heavily, making the whole house fall silent—not out of fear, but as a natural reaction. So for a moment I and Pangzi didn't speak.

"Bring me a chair over..." Fan Wuchang snapped his fingers, motioning for a subordinate to bring a chair and place it opposite Xian Shi Chao.

I was wondering what he was doing, but the next scene made my eyes widen and I laughed in disbelief—he was actually negotiating with a female ghost.

After Fan Wuchang sat down, he lit a cigarette, gestured for his subordinate to remove the cloth stuffed in Xian Shi Chao's mouth, and then he bluntly asked the possessed Xian Shi Chao a question.

"Tell me, which path are you from, and why are you messing with my brother?"

That remark left me speechless……He actually used the negotiation style of gangsters to deal with a ghost—could that work?

This minute I thought Fan Wuchang was ridiculous, but the next second I widened my eyes in disbelief, because his tactic actually seemed to work.

Xian Shi Chao's face flashed a hint of ferocity as he roared at Fan Wuchang: "He killed my brother; I won't let him off—I'll go after him."

"Who is your brother?" Fan Wuchang asked coldly.

That female voice again drifted from Xian Shi Chao's body, she spoke with full resentment:

"My brother is the Azure Hawk of the Fierce Tiger Gang."

I didn't expect that as soon as she finished speaking, Fan Wuchang fiercely kicked him over. To be precise, that kick was aimed at Xian Shi Chao's body, because the female ghost was possessing him.

"I don't know if your brother is a hawk or a dog; in our line of work, any day we're licking blood off the blade's edge—your brother died, that's that, being inferior isn't anyone's fault. Now I give you three minutes; if you don't get out of my brother's body, I'll make you regret it." Fan Wuchang slapped the chair's backrest, and with a crack he smashed it to pieces.

At this moment Fan Wuchang didn't lose composure like a roaring lion, but his deliberately restrained voice fully conveyed his anger.

"Haha, you want me to look good—how could you make me look good… by stabbing me with a knife?" The female ghost laughed arrogantly, completely unfazed by Fan Wuchang's threat.

Fan Wuchang, being mocked by her like that, showed no anger at all; instead he remained calm and stared straight at her.

"Are you trying to intimidate me with your ghostly identity? I'm standing here talking to you today—who knows, we might be comrades tomorrow."

Fan Wuchang's tone had a hint of self-mockery, but also carried an unquestionable confidence.

The female ghost possessing Xian Shi Chao suddenly lifted her head, glared at Fan Wuchang, and gritted her teeth: "In short, since Xian Shi Chao killed my brother, I will definitely make him die—no one can stop me."

"I can……" Fan Wuchang said, shaking his right index finger, very resolutely: "Even if heaven can't stop you, I can too."

Afterwards, he braced both hands on the chair's arms and slowly moved closer to Xian Shi Chao.

"If you dare to move my brother, I'll immediately have someone dig up your grave, expose your bones to the sun, then pour some gasoline on them and hold a grand cremation for you."

Though he said it in his usual plain tone, it sent a chill down people's spines. I couldn't help but shiver—so ruthless, truly too ruthless.

People live in yang houses, ghosts in yin courts; although the soul isn't in the grave, the bones certainly are. Bones are especially important to a ghost. By digging up someone's bones, he cuts off their chance of reincarnation, leaving this female ghost to wander forever as a lonely wild spirit.

"You……" Even as a ghost, being threatened like that by Fan Wuchang made her involuntarily lose some color.

Fan Wuchang let out another cold laugh, fingering his ring as he muttered to himself: "You and your brother may be dead, but you still have family, right? Guess if you killed my brother, I won't hunt them down one by one and finish them off……"

His words carried an undeniable killing resolve; when he reached the last word, Fan Wuchang's tone turned icy cold, truly like the Black Impermanence Fan Wujing emerging from hell, his eyes devoid of any feeling.

A cold chill spread through the air; despite it being June, the weather made one feel as if plunged into an ice cellar, a shiver without cold.

This soul‑trembling chill came from Fan Wuchang; his killing intent was so strong it affected my senses, making me smell a foul, bloody stench in the air.

"If you have something against me, come at me—don't involve my family." Xian Shi Chao's face showed a hint of struggle; it seemed this was not a heartless female ghost.

"I only give you three minutes; if you don't leave after three minutes, I won't just do the two things mentioned above—I'll also spend money to hire someone to blast your soul to smithereens, so you can't even be a ghost." Fan Wuchang turned his back to Xian Shi Chao, raised his wrist, and began timing.

Because Fan Wuchang's body blocked my view when he turned, I couldn't see Xian Shi Chao's facial expression at that moment, but my mood was now complicated.

To dare threaten a ghost, and with such confidence—Fan Wuchang is the first person I've ever seen like that.

Fan Wuchang lowered his head and slowly lit a cigarette; at the moment he lowered his head, I saw a woman in white flying toward him.

That woman in white was naturally the female ghost possessing Xian Shi Chao; although Fan Wuchang is no pushover, the ghost isn't a vegetarian either—her move clearly aimed to possess him.

"Xiao……" I hurriedly warned Fan Wuchang to be careful, but before I could even utter the word "heart," I was utterly stunned by what unfolded before my eyes.

Fan Wuchang's hand holding the lighter paused, his pupils constricted slightly, and he turned his body in an unimaginable arc. His right hand had somehow produced a military ridge blade, and as he turned, he swept it through the air.

Everyone's eyes flashed in the room; they saw only a silver streak slash through the air with a swish.

I'm certain Fan Wuchang couldn't see the female ghost, yet his sense was so precise that where the blade sliced, it was exactly her neck.

A shrill scream rang out in the room; the voice belonged to the female ghost that had previously possessed Xian Shi Chao.

The blade sliced the female ghost's neck; in Pangzi's incredulous gaze, she began to dissipate bit by bit, finally turning into a gas and vanishing completely from this world.

"How is this possible……" I blurted out; this scene surpassed my comprehension—how could a weapon not consecrated harm a ghost? Damn it, what's going on today? First I met a gangster who dares threaten a ghost, then that gangster actually managed to kill a ghost—with a knife.

Even though Fan Wuchang bears a killing aura that normally keeps ghosts and gods at bay, I still can't comprehend what I just witnessed—why his blade could kill a female ghost.

After the female ghost vanished, Fan Wuchang still kept his right hand slightly bent, holding the military ridge blade before him, eyes watching all six directions, ears listening to all eight, not daring to be the slightest bit careless.

"She's dead……" I said, still shaken; but as soon as the words left my mouth, I couldn't help cursing myself inwardly for being an idiot—she was a ghost, she'd already died once, so now she should have had her soul scattered and vanished.

"Eh…… What's wrong with me, why are you tying me up! Brother Chang, what are you doing?" The bewildered and at‑a‑loss voice broke the stalemate in the room. The speaker was Xian Shi Chao; he had now returned to normal, looking bewildered as if just woke up, completely unaware of what had happened before.

"Walk…" Facing Xian Shi Chao's question, Fan Wu Chang didn't answer, straightened his collar and turned to walk out.

After we went downstairs, we could still hear the noisy sounds coming from the room behind us. I thought, even without Fan Wu Chang clearing up the doubts, someone would still explain everything that happened to Xian Shi Chao.
