Chapter 140: Breaking the Law While Knowing the Law; Favoritism and Corruption

~8 min read 1,511 words

Xu Yuan hesitated briefly, then said to Fu Jingyu, "We shall act separately!"

Fu Jingyu nodded, reached out and took out two small triangular flags; Song Lu, following his senior brother closely, ran toward a siege tower to provide support.

Xu Yuan and Yu Yunhang charged toward another siege tower, with Da Fu trailing behind Xu Yuan, flapping his wings as he ran.

Lang Xiao Ba was at a loss, not knowing which group to follow.

In the end, he gritted his teeth and followed behind Da Fu.

Beneath this siege tower, twenty Captains had formed a square formation to defend it, led by the Inspector of Zhou Leizi's squad.

Zhou Leizi followed right beside the Inspector, my lord; beads of sweat the size of soybeans rolled constantly down his broad face. He had already used his "Farming Method" twice, leaving only one use for today!

Yet the ghost soldiers around them continued to surge forward in waves.

The great ghost before them stood five zhang tall; its lower body resembled six pairs of human legs spliced together, while its upper body was like a lobster, covered in hard shells segment by segment, impervious to blades and spears.

Two thick arms, one gripping a rusted great hammer, the other clutching a broken blade.

On the great ghost's back, four long fleshy tendrils grew, drifting and writhing in the air; seizing an opportunity, they would suddenly extend downward and snatch away a Captain!

But among the ghost soldiers, the most troubling were those wraiths; clearly right before their eyes, they would suddenly flicker and vanish—only to appear behind you.

Then there were the soul-confusing spirits, charging up along the ground; suddenly spitting a mouthful of foul breath at you, they would leave you dizzy and disoriented, unable to distinguish friend from foe, swinging your sword wildly in a frenzy.

One of the fleshy tendrils on the great ghost's back dropped down with a swoosh; Zhou Leizi, caught off guard, was wrapped around the neck and swiftly lifted out of the formation...

The Inspector roared in anger, "Leizi!"

A golden pellet flew through the air, striking the fleshy tendril solidly.

With a crack, the tendril was smashed apart; Zhou Leizi fell with a thud at the great ghost's feet.

Zhou Leizi, driven to desperation, took advantage of his proximity to the great ghost and forcefully threw all his remaining soybean seeds onto it.

Splash—

The soybeans took root the moment they landed.

The great ghost's body shifted from solid to illusory, yet the soybeans did not pass through the shadow to fall on the ground; instead, they stuck to the shadow, their roots rapidly spreading and drilling into the shadow.

The great ghost felt a piercing pain, and its own yin energy was rapidly draining away; in a rage, it raised its six legs and stomped fiercely down at Zhou Leizi.

The Inspector urgently manipulated the golden pellet to shoot at the great ghost's neck, but it was smashed away by the great ghost's hammer; gritting his teeth, the Inspector charged out of the formation, spitting Fu Zhong Huo from his belly toward the great ghost while reaching out to pull Zhou Leizi.

His Fu Zhong Huo could reach at most two zhang.

The great ghost was forced back by the Fu Zhong Huo, yet silently wrapped two of its fleshy tendrils around the ankles of the Inspector and Zhou Leizi; this retreat dragged the two of them far away, completely separating them from the formation!

"Not good!" the Inspector thought silently, then saw dozens of ghost soldiers closing in, while the rest all lunged toward the siege tower!

The Inspector slashed through the fleshy tendrils with his blade and stood back-to-back with Zhou Leizi, mutually covering each other as they fought off the surrounding ghost soldiers.

However, Zhou Leizi's Farming Method could only be used three times a day; any more than that, and given his current level, the risk of a demonic transformation would increase greatly.

And although the great ghost was struggling fiercely to tear off the soybean vines from its body, without the Inspector and Zhou Leizi, the defense line at the siege tower was already in grave danger!

Zhou Leizi, his broad face grim, pinched a few broad bean seeds in his hand: "Inspector, I will carve out a path for you; you return..."

"Are you trying to lose your life!"

"If we delay any longer, both of us will die!"

Zhou Leizi stopped consulting him; just as he was about to throw the broad beans in his hand, a remarkably tough rope suddenly snaked in from beneath the feet of the ghost soldiers, wrapped around the waists of the two men, and with a swoosh, yanked them into the air!

Seeing the two men dragged away, the great ghost flew into a rage, swinging its great hammer and broken blade in a flurry of chopping and smashing, heading straight for the two men in the air; having no footing at all, the Inspector was about to spit out his Fu Zhong Huo when he saw a short sword fly through the air, effortlessly severing both the great hammer and the broken blade, then spinning around to slice off the great ghost's two arms, thick as roof beams, and finally flashing once more to pierce through the great ghost's skull.

The great ghost, which a squad led by the Inspector could only barely hold off, crashed down with a boom.

The Inspector and Zhou Leizi stood there with mouths agape, maintaining that posture as they were pulled back into the camp by the beast-tendon rope.

Upon landing, the two men even forgot to cushion their fall, hitting the ground solidly.

After that fall, the two came to their senses and found the rope around their waists retracting, drilling into the hand of the person standing ahead.

That person wore the official robes of a Deputy Inspector, standing alone before the formation; as hundreds of ghost soldiers charged up, he opened his mouth: Hoo—

Fu Zhong Huo rolled out, forming a wall of fire five zhang wide.

The wall of fire advanced forward at incredible speed.

It engulfed those ghost soldiers, and wisps of black smoke rose from within; the ghost soldiers had all vanished into thin air!

If it wasn't that Deputy Inspector Xu from the Southern Office, who else could it be?

The Inspector sucked in a sharp breath: How domineering!

Zhou Leizi rubbed his sore bottom from the fall and laughed without a care: "My lord, you are both Rank Dan Xiu; compared to his, your Fu Zhong Huo is like a fart released by the Star Lord of Fire, hehehe..."

The Inspector glanced sideways at him and said, "You have always said you couldn't trust these outsiders; why are you praising them now?"

Zhou Leizi's broad face instantly turned the color of pig liver; he stammered and could say no more.

Yu Yunhang stood loyally behind the Deputy Inspector, my lord... five paces away!

To his left and right were the formations of the Captains from the Champa Office.

Yu Yunhang secretly glanced around and sighed with relief: Good, no one noticed me; everyone is watching the Deputy Inspector, my lord, display his divine might.

It's not that I don't want to go up and help; the Deputy Inspector, my lord, simply doesn't need assistance. If I went up, I would only be in the way beside him.

Da Fu followed second, clucking clucking, staring with wide eyes, turning his goose head left and right, not knowing what he should do or where he should stand.

Suddenly, he saw many soybeans growing on the ground; in an instant they had ripened, and with a crack the pods burst open, scattering many soybeans into the air; Da Fu happily pecked at them and ate.

Lang Xiao Ba followed third; unable to outrun a goose, this left Lang Xiao Ba dejected.

Then he realized his timing was "perfectly appropriate"; Deputy Inspector Xu had already cleared away those ghost soldiers!

He thought, "I will pretend I intentionally waited until everything was over to arrive!"

But I really wasn't...

Ghost soldiers were still surging out of the mud; Xu Yuan stepped back one pace and signaled the Inspector: "Hold the formation strictly."

Xu Yuan leaped up onto the siege tower and looked toward Lin Zi.

The "Head-Chopping Blade" in Lin Zi's hand was about to take shape; the blade shone with a brilliant, snow-white light, and the hilt was his magical artifact.

Lin Zijin raised his blade and advanced, stepping forward toward the "Master" suppressed by the law. The Master was pinned to the ground, unable to break free, yet his neck twisted at a grotesque angle, thrust high upward. Just as Lin Zijin was about to reach him, he suddenly spoke: "You hold the Imperial Ming Law in your hands, yet you bend it for personal gain!"

"Ask yourself honestly—do you still have the qualification to cultivate this law?!"
