Chapter 43: Volume 1 Chapter 43 Black-bellied x Arrogant (7)
In the evening they ate the instant noodles and some snacks still left in the stockpile, untouched by anyone.
After sleeping until midnight, Jiang Zhi developed a high fever.
Because there was no medicine, relying only on a simple bandage to stop the bleeding, in this hot, harsh weather her arm was bitten deep by a zombie, becoming inflamed and infected.
Xie Wuchen, lying beside her, immediately noticed her abnormality, sat up, and placed the back of his hand on her forehead, feeling scorching heat.
"Zhizhi, Zhizhi!"
The girl was trapped in a nightmare, her lips slightly parted, murmuring incessantly.
Xie Wuchen's face darkened, he glanced around, then immediately stood up, pushed open the glass door, and strode out.
When he returned he was carrying medicine, which he had found in a nearby pharmacy; most medicines had been looted by the base or other wanderers, but what Xie Wuchen found were leftovers, fortunately he had left plenty of anti-inflammatory and fever-reducing drugs.
For them these medicines were of little use; once caught and bitten by a zombie, infection was 100%.
Xie Wuchen fed her the fever-reducing medicine, then rubbed alcohol on her skin to cool her down.
While treating her arm wound, Jiang Zhi woke in his embrace, her eyes bleary, she parted her dry lips and asked, "Am I about to turn into a zombie?"
The girl's face was flushed from the fever; her usual cat-like arrogant, never-showing-weakness dark eyes now welled with crystal tears.
Xie Wuchen met her gaze, paused his action, and helplessly comforted: "No, it's just a high fever from the wound inflammation."
Jiang Zhi didn't take his words to heart; when sick one is at their weakest, tears welled up at the corners of her eyes, she pouted her lips, looking aggrieved and pitiful.
"Xie Wuchen, if I turn into a zombie, please don't kill me? I'm afraid of pain, just let me go and let me wander outside to fend for myself."
"Xie Wuchen, this bracelet on my wrist is my most valuable possession; I'll give it to you, just don't kill me!"
"Wu—wu—wu——"
Her chattering words finally turned into sobs.
In a short while, the girl had already said everything she needed to say in her life.
Xie Wuchen had never seen her like this; he couldn't help but chuckle slightly, his gaze catching the tears at the corner of her eyes and the heart-rending sobs in his ears, his deep black brows furrowing slightly.
He raised his palm and covered her mouth.
Physically stopping her crying.
He said with a headache: "You won't turn into a zombie! Jiang Zhi, did you hear me clearly?"
Jiang Zhi stared, the tear hanging on her long raven-feather eyelashes trembled lightly and fell beneath her eyes, her gaze seeming to ask if it was really true.
Xie Wuchen continued his action and answered seriously: "Really!"
Having received a satisfactory answer, Jiang Zhi felt drowsiness overcome her; from taking the fever medicine, her eyelids grew heavy and she couldn't keep them open, and soon fell asleep.
Xie Wuchen heard her deep breathing, his peripheral vision swept over her face, his motion paused briefly, then he quickly continued.
Ignoring the sudden strange feeling welling up in his heart, his deep pupils glowed with a faint light.
She's afraid of pain?
That's not bad, a point we can use.
Jiang Zhi woke from hunger at three o'clock the next afternoon; as soon as she opened her eyes and saw the man sitting beside her, all last night's memories surfaced.
Jiang Zhi's complexion gradually worsened.
She actually.
Actually cried that long in front of him!
Wow.
She could just live on another planet.
Seeing her awake, Xie Wuchen greeted her warmly: "Morning, Zhizhi."
Jiang Zhi rose expressionlessly, didn't glance at him, walked stiffly to the door, pretending to look outside for zombies.
Xie Wuchen walked behind her and handed her food: "Zhizhi, have something to eat."
Jiang Zhi's body suddenly tensed, she wanted to speak but stopped: "You, last night."
Xie Wuchen raised a smile, the pale gold light outside falling on his face made him look as handsome as an immortal in an ink painting.
"Last night after I fell asleep I don't remember anything."
Jiang Zhi's lips relaxed, she glanced at him and nodded satisfactorily: "Exactly!"
Exactly right.
This guy is still quite cooperative.
They left the convenience store, carrying big packs, under the scorching sun; Jiang Zhi was drenched in sweat, and soon her head felt dizzy again.
Xie Wuchen noticed and immediately suggested: "Zhizhi, let's find a place to rest first; I can't hold out much longer."
Upon hearing that, Jiang Zhi's lips involuntarily curled upward.
Needless to say, this guy is becoming more and more likable.
Realizing she had praised him twice in her heart, Jiang Zhi tried to find an excuse for herself.
He's still just a little bit inferior to her!!
They walked a long distance; Jiang Zhi was purposeful, wanting to find the original owner's younger brother.
Though not on good terms with the original owner, they had lived together for over ten years as siblings.
That was the original owner's longing.
As they were about to reach the resting gas station, two burly men suddenly appeared not far away, gripping iron rods, marching toward them with aggressive vigor.
Jiang Zhi's first reaction was to run, but when she turned around preparing to flee, two people also approached from behind.
It's over.
The burly man walked up to them, sized them up from head to toe, then drawled slowly: "Married couple?"
Upon hearing that, Jiang Zhi flared with shame and anger: "What husband-wife! He's my lackey! Got it?"
Even though we are few, we cannot lose our momentum.
The burly man looked at her fierce, claws-and-teeth appearance, gave a sympathetic glance to the man beside him, hefted the iron rod in his hand, and didn't want to waste words with her: 'This whole area is our turf; once you come here, you don't get to leave.'
The men are left to do hard labor, the women, you know.
The girl is beautiful, but she has a bad temper and still needs to be disciplined!
Xie Wuchen showed a frightened expression, trembling as he hid behind Jiang Zhi, and whispered, 'We'll give you food; can you let us go?'
The man was tall and big, and when he stepped forward he towered over them.
The burly man didn't expect him to be such a wimp, still relying on a girl.
He looked down on them in his heart, gave them no chance to speak, and waved his hand at the few burly men behind.
Before Jiang Zhi passed out, she gave the man beside her a glare.
How can you be so cowardly! You're tall and big when you stand up—does that match your height?!!
In the dark basement.
A chilly, foul smell permeated the air, and from time to time the sound of weeping came from the corner.
As soon as Jiang Zhi woke up, she saw many people sitting in the cramped space.
They were all captured by those burly men; in this zombie-apocalypse world, the hardest to guard against and the most vicious thing is only human hearts.
Most of the people in the basement were women, with a few men, but they were in the minority.
Most of the boys were taken away to do hard labor.
Jiang Zhi glanced contemptuously at the useless Xie Wuchen beside her, then lifted her foot and kicked him.
Xie Wuchen slowly came to, soon panicking, his body trembling uncontrollably.
"Zhizhi, where—where is this?"
Jiang Zhi didn't understand why he had become like this; he looked even more frightened than she did.
His courage was still too small.
She was pleased with herself.
Or maybe she's just awesome!
"I don't know!" Jiang Zhi crossed her arms, calmly surveyed the surroundings, and said unhurriedly, 'You don't need to be afraid; since you're my follower, I won't abandon you to life or death.'
