Chapter 68: Moke's Thoughts
Recently, Moke has felt that its status as a Sower in the Fang Ting City magical girl squad has been getting lower and lower.
According to the descriptions it has heard, a Sower is the hub for communication between the kingdom and local governments in every city, as well as the guide for magical girls, and is undoubtedly meant to be respected and loved. Yet, the treatment it receives in Fang Ting City is completely different.
Cui Que is an inspector from the Investigation Institute, so her status is undoubtedly higher than its own; it can accept that she doesn't mince words with it. Lin Xiaolu is a magical girl it contracted personally, but because it told her a small lie at the very beginning, she is at odds with it every day now. Only Xia Liang is willing to treat it with gentleness, but this gentleness doesn't seem to be directed at a Sower, but rather as if it were some kind of pet.
Although Moke knows that it is a tiny bit incompetent as a Sower, and it didn't even have any concept of what this identity was supposed to do before, its progress should be obvious to all; there is no reason for it to be discriminated against!
Even the inspector from the Investigation Institute looked at it in a new light and offered high praise after seeing its performance; doesn't that prove the point?
Moke feels that, at the very least, it certainly isn't its own problem.
Since it isn't wrong, the issue of its status in the squad is just a matter of bad luck, so it must think of some ways to change all of this.
Existing relationships are hard to change in a short time, so the best method now is naturally to develop a magical girl who is on its side and led by it.
Once it has the first ally standing with it, breaking the inherent impression that it is just a mascot, would it still be difficult to gradually let Xiaolu and Xialiang recognize its excellence?
Of course not!
This is Moke's entire plan.
Therefore, when it discovered a new prospective magical girl in the Lixing District a few days ago, its first reaction was not to immediately go back and notify the other members of the squad. Instead, it thought about taking it slow and first letting itself cultivate a certain level of affection with the other party.
As of now, this process is going quite smoothly.
The girl Moke discovered at the Fuli Academy in the Lixing District is named Bai Jingxuan; she is a child who looks very sensible and well-behaved. Although she is a little younger than the other members of the squad, there is no problem with her becoming a magical girl.
Relying on the fact that its knowledge is more extensive than such a little girl's, Moke quickly gained her favor and friendship.
At first, it just chatted with her about interesting things in life, listened to her small daily troubles, and at the same time, racked its brains to bring up the knowledge it had gained in the magical kingdom—which wasn't exactly vast—and told it all to Bai Jingxuan.
As the conversation progressed, it developed some small ulterior motives and began to intermittently mention magical girl matters, and it also confessed that it was the Sower of Fang Ting City. However, it included quite a bit of subjective embellishment: it deliberately described itself as virtuous and respected, deeply admired, and playing a critical role in the squad, completely disregarding the fact that it had almost been reduced to a mascot.
It bragged like this, and Bai Jingxuan listened like this; she never doubted the authenticity of the information in Moke's words, though she would occasionally raise her own doubts:
"If you, Miss Fairy, have such good relationships with other magical girls, won't they get jealous if you come out alone to talk to me?"
"Jealous? Maybe they will, but they can only wait for me to return, unwilling and longing! After all, I am a Sower, and going out to find new magical girls is my mission!"
To this, Moke just laughed, carried away by its own success.
This strange relationship lasted for several days, and as the girl and the fairy became familiar with each other, the "friendship" between them became much more sincere.
Moke did not forget its somewhat impure purpose, but it was also infected by the child's pure and kind personality. Compared to the friendship that was entirely born of utilitarianism at the beginning, it also genuinely developed quite a bit of affection for this child from the bottom of its heart.
Bai Jingxuan's thoughts were much simpler; after all, she knew nothing of Moke's intentions and could not guess that there were so many calculations involved.
She just began to let down her guard against Moke.
At first, facing this fairy that had suddenly appeared, although she was very curious, she also had basic psychological defenses. But as they spent these days together, she admitted that Moke was interesting enough as a friend, and her subconscious also told her that Moke's nature shouldn't be bad.
So when Moke said to her, "You can also become a magical girl," although she was a little surprised, and even felt a small joy, it didn't reach the level of being shocked.
"But my body is very weak, and I have an illness that is hard to cure and affects my movement; can I still be a magical girl like that?" she asked.
"It doesn't matter. Once you become a magical girl, no matter how poor your original physical state is, you can be as healthy as everyone else!"
Moke promised with full confidence: "After all, that is the power of a magical girl, the power that brings hope to people!"
"Really? My eyes won't be a problem either?" Bai Jingxuan couldn't help but touch the eye socket where her prosthetic eye was placed.
"No problem, no problem! You have to believe in magic!" Moke patted its chest.
"Then how do I become a magical girl?"
Bai Jingxuan imagined it with some yearning, then turned to worry: "Do I have to write an application like applying for a subsidy? What should I do if my handwriting is too ugly?"
"The process isn't that complicated; it just requires that I have found you and that the other team members are willing to accept you."
Moke sat in the shade, shaking its ears with self-satisfaction: "In a few days, I'll introduce you back and give them a big surprise!"
Two more days passed after this conversation, and so it arrived at today.
Moke kept its promise to come and find Bai Jingxuan to build their relationship, and after another pleasant afternoon of chatting and regaining its missing self-confidence here, it patted its bottom and wanted to go home.
It was already calculating when it would be best to introduce Bai Jingxuan back, and when it would most make the others feel its critical role.
Would it be better to say casually when Cui Que is distressed by a lack of manpower, "I have fulfilled my mission; I have already found a new prospective magical girl"?
Or should it reveal the truth with a disdainful smile when Lin Xiaolu is bickering with it and saying that it is useless as a Sower?
At the thought of having the chance to turn its reputation around in the squad, Moke was so excited that its whiskers and tail were almost pointing to the sky.
Saying goodbye to Bai Jingxuan, it climbed over the wall of the Fuli Academy and flew along the path it had come. It closed its eyes, immersed in its own pipe dreams, shaking its head, humming a little tune, feeling relaxed and happy.
And after flying about several hundred meters, just as it was about to enter the next block, it suddenly felt a pain in its head, as if it had hit some obstacle, and subconsciously raised its head due to the reaction force.
"What is this, who has nothing better to do than park a car in the middle of the road..."
Having had its good mood ruined, it widened its cat eyes and was just about to complain loudly, but it only got halfway through the sentence before it couldn't continue.
Because there was nothing in front of it.
There were no obstacles like the cars, walls, or utility poles it had imagined, nor were there any pedestrians. In front of it was just a normal street path, looking completely unobstructed.
It was as if the hard object its head had just hit was an illusion.
Moke suddenly thought of a certain possibility.
For it, this possibility was actually very familiar, because since it arrived in Fang Ting City, this was not the first time.
It stretched out its paw, pushed forward gently, and pressed down, feeling as if there were an invisible wall in the air in front of it, blocking the path it was continuing on.
"...I'm done for, meow."
After a long while, it muttered to itself, somewhat dazed.
