Lu Xun also seemed to have said something similar about dreams: dreaming is free; speaking of dreams is not free; dreaming is true; speaking of dreams inevitably involves lying.

Lu Xun said dreaming is free. This statement is correct. As for this dream, you can do it however you like; no one can control it—not even yourself; no one can control it.

But, speaking of one's dream still requires certain courage and boldness; turning the dream into reality is even harder.

Some dreams are truly like the verses Jia Baoyu saw in the Tai Xu Huan Jing in Dream of the Red Chamber: some are like spring clouds in the sky, coming without trace, leaving without a trace, no one can pursue; some are like flying blossoms and flowing water before one's eyes, coming hurriedly, going hurriedly.

Some people, because their dream is beautiful, want to stay in the dream and not come out. The person who indulges in a vain dream, which everyone treats as a joke, is exactly such a person. If you don't believe it, look at ______.

Lu Sheng, who stayed at the inn and was rushing to take the exam, told the Daoist about his poverty and sighed over his unfortunate fate. The Daoist said: 'This is easy; just follow my method and you will immediately change your fate.'

Actually, that Daoist is a swindler. All swindlers have highly skilled deceit. Like those multi-level marketers, their tricks are too clever to be seen through. But most of those deceived are people who love to dream of beauty or are eager for wealth—young people like this Lu Sheng who wants both wealth and fame and to establish a family.

I have always been doubtful of Daoists, considering them superfluous in society. What is 'The Dao that can be spoken is not the eternal Dao; the name that can be named is not the eternal name. Non-being is the beginning of heaven and earth; being is the mother of all things. Constantly non-being, I wish to observe its wonder; constantly being, I wish to observe its outcome. These two arise together yet differ in name. Both are called the Profound; the Profound beyond the Profound, the gateway to myriad wonders.'

All this chaotic, infinitely profound stuff—no one can understand it, no one can comprehend it. And some swindlers precisely exploit people's psychology of 'not understanding' to commit fraud. If you understand, they cannot deceive you.

The Daoist seized Lu Sheng, who was eager for wealth and fame, and said: 'You don't want wealth, do you? You want to attend a prestigious school? You want to marry a beautiful wife? You want to achieve fame and establish a family?'

"Want! Think about it day and night! Even in dreams you want it!"

"Wanting makes it easy!" the Daoist said, putting on airs: "Rest your head on my pillow, sleep a nap, have a dream; in the dream, all your wishes will come true!"

"Heaven still has such a good thing! No need to pay; just sleep with a fragrant pillow and you'll get it! With such a good thing, why would I not do it?"

That fake Daoist had long seen through this inexperienced, simple-minded young person.

Young people are easily deceived; a few pleasant words can make their heads spin, leaving them clueless about directions. But some young people are not like that; they are very pragmatic, and most of those pragmatic youths come from life's hardships. Meanwhile, those who seek quick gains are mostly weak seedlings grown in a sheltered shed: they have never experienced wind and rain.

Lu Sheng, who wanted to pillow the Daoist's fragrant wealth, if he thought a little: if he could pillow the fragrant pillow for wealth, why wouldn't the Daoist pillow it himself, or let his relatives and friends do so? Why let a stranger? Isn't this obviously a scam? The Daoist deceives strangers, whereas those who run multi-level marketing scams do the opposite—they first try it on their own relatives, friends, and classmates. This world! This person! So many things make it impossible to comprehend!

Or speaking of Lu Sheng, who wanted wealth and to attend a prestigious school, he was deceived by the old Daoist into going to bed, obediently resting his head on the fragrant pillow. The old Daoist told Lu Sheng: 'Lie down, sleep well. You will soon enter the dreamland; in the dream, the things you cannot obtain in the world will be fulfilled to your satisfaction. Live it up once.'

Under the old Daoist's hypnosis, Lu Sheng quickly entered dreamland. His first wish was quickly fulfilled: Huangbang Gaozhong, he entered a prestigious school; then a series of good things followed: he became a high official, indeed a top leader, married a beautiful and virtuous wife, soon had children and grandchildren filling the hall, and he served as an honest official his whole life. He was never corrupt or abusive, remained just and clean, and did many good deeds for the people. He never suffered a major illness, lived a hundred years, everything went as wished, spring breeze in his favor…

"Time to eat, you lazy pig, just saying a few words can put you to sleep. Being this lazy, how will you manage in the future? Which daughter-in-law would dare to say this to such a lazy person? Hurry up and eat; I've made the millet rice, just finished." At that moment, the innkeeper shouted loudly.

Amid the loud shouting of the innkeeper's wife, Lu Sheng's beautiful dream woke. The old Daoist muttered a sour, half-understood phrase: "Life's suitability is thus!" I translated the old Daoist's words (I had once studied Dao for a few days, didn't succeed, left; studied literature, also didn't succeed. But I know a little about Dao): "To live life like this is already enough."

How wonderful in the dream: achieving success and fame, Imperial List High School, marrying and having children, wealth and honor. Such a grand dream is what everyone wants to do, what everyone hopes for in their hearts.

Like the dream of Huangliang, it is not called a dream but an aspiration. Yet aspirations, though good and beautiful, are ultimately dreams. Everyone knows they are empty dreams. Speaking of empty dreams, 'it merely teaches people to enter such empty dreams.' But those empty dreams are nothing more than clouds in the sky and flowers in the mirror.

But there are those who wish to realize this beauty; they do not speak of the beautiful dream, they act. They dream of the future and strive to achieve that future in the present. Because of this fact, many intellectuals use their wisdom to carry the Dao through dreams. In a nutshell: 'Only those who turn dreams into reality have true dreams.'

Some people's dreams can only be spoken about; speaking them draws only a laugh; some people lack even the courage to speak them. Those who harbor beautiful dreams in their hearts yet lack the courage to speak them—how pitiable such people are!
