Someone said, 'There is no garbage in this world, only things placed in the wrong place.' In response, Laozi gave three examples to illustrate the relationship between usefulness and uselessness.
Laozi said: 'Thirty spokes share one hub; when there is nothing there, it is the use of the cart. Molding clay to make a vessel; when there is nothing there, it is the use of the vessel. Chiseling out doors and windows to make a room; when there is nothing there, it is the use of the room. Therefore, having something brings advantage; having nothing brings utility.'
Laozi's words mean: Thirty spokes surround a wheel hub; the spokes are the supports, and the empty space in the middle of the spokes is the function of the wheel, allowing the cart to turn; fired clay pottery, the outer part of the pottery is used, and the inner empty space is also useful—it is the function of the pottery; in a constructed house, the walls are useful, and the doors and windows are also used. Therefore, having and lacking are relative; things that seem useless actually have great utility.
People are the same: everyone has reasons and value for existing, but a person's value is revealed only when they do things for others. A person who wholeheartedly serves themselves is like trash.
