The founder of Buddhism, Shakyamuni, believed that life is full of suffering: birth suffering, aging suffering, illness suffering, death suffering, love suffering, separation suffering, resentment suffering, and the suffering of not getting what one seeks; having money also brings suffering, lacking money brings even more suffering, idleness brings suffering, being busy also brings suffering; life is full of difficulties: birth difficulties, aging difficulties, illness difficulties, separation difficulties, reunion also brings difficulty, obtaining also brings difficulty, not getting what one seeks also brings difficulty; having money brings its own difficulties, lacking money brings its own difficulties, life is simply being troubled by this suffering and these difficulties.
For this, he bitterly pondered under the tree, thought deeply, investigated, and gained insight.
After much thought, investigation, and insight, Shakyamuni finally concluded that life is 'all four are empty'.
His conclusion left everyone bewildered; if everything in life is empty, what happiness can one still speak of?
The wise say: that is, by removing the 'greed' from one's heart, those who are greedy all day long will have their hearts forever troubled by suffering and difficulty, with no happiness to speak of. Only those who can help others more and contribute more to society will forever live in happiness.
