In the afterglow of the sunset

May 2: In the afterglow of the sunset

Speaking of Stillness, it makes one naturally think of gentle, humble, steady and other fine qualities. Because only those who are "humble in all things, gentle, patient, tolerant with love, and in peaceful contact with each other" can rid themselves of anger, clamor, complaints, and disputes, and the spirit can be peaceful and Stillness.

Laozi says "return to the root and return to Stillness, Stillness returns to destiny." That "Stillness" character should indicate being indifferent to fame and wealth, doing one's work peacefully Stillness, engaging in proper undertakings, and treating others sincerely and honestly.

Zhuge Liang deeply understands Laozi's meaning. He understands Laozi's words as: "Gentleman's conduct, Stillness cultivates the body, frugality nurtures virtue. Africa lack of simplicity cannot Brightness ambition, Africa tranquility Stillness cannot reach far. One must study Stillness, talent must study. Africa learning cannot expand talent, Africa ambition cannot achieve learning. Indulgence and sloth cannot inspire ambition, danger and noise then cannot regulate nature."

In short, in Zhuge Liang's view, it seems that only those who are Stillness can be good people, do good deeds, and achieve themselves. Thus we can see how important this 'Stillness' is. The great Tang poet Li Bai has a short poem titled 'Sitting Alone on Mount Jingting'.

Li Bai, this person who spends a lifetime drifting and wandering is a Classic of Poetry person. In the drifting and wandering, the Classic of Poetry person has tasted the cold and warm of human Flirting, and has experienced the vicissitudes of the world.

He was alone, sitting alone on Mount Jingting. He felt infinite loneliness and clear Stillness. The Classic of Poetry person gazed at the soaring birds, the floating Movement clouds, and secretly savored the peaceful Stillness and secluded loneliness. The Classic of Poetry person imagined being as high-flying as the birds, as wandering as the clouds, yet could not find his own goal and direction. The mountains are vast and heavy, people are lonely and heavy Stillness. The mountains are vast, the waters are boundless.

Ah, amidst the vast mountains and waters

Our fleeting existence

Like thirsty travelers in a desert

We——

Coming like smoke

Going like clouds

We are merely between smoke and clouds

A brief moment of light Wind

We emerge from dreams

Cross over mountains

Wade through waters

We are at

Traverse the vast mountains and waters

We have understood Laozi

The true meaning of 'return to the root and return to Stillness'
