As the previous chapter said, the two little demons in Lianhuadong, following the Cave King's order, took the 'Red Gourd' and 'Jade Pure Bottle' down the mountain to capture Sun Wukong, but were intercepted by Sun Wukong, who had transformed into the appearance of an old Daoist, blocking them on the mountainside; Sun Wukong intended to use the Red Gourd he had transformed from his own monkey hair to exchange for the little demons' Red Gourd.
The little demon, hearing that Sun Wukong's Red Gourd could hold the moon, felt a bit tempted; Sun Wukong saw the little demon's interest and further said, 'My Red Gourd can not only hold the moon; if the heavens anger me, I can even contain the heavens themselves.' The moon, being placed inside once a month, is why the moon has its phases of yin and yang, full and waning; the heavens, being placed inside once a year, is why the South Pole and North Pole each have half a year of daylight and half a year of darkness.
The two little demons who came to capture Sun Wukong, hearing that the old Daoist's Red Gourd could hold the moon and the heavens, wanted to take advantage.
Demons and monsters all seek to take advantage of people; otherwise, how could the world's crows be as black as pitch, and earthly demons be as poisonous as they are?
Thus, the two little demons whispered to each other, 'Can we use the Red Gourd in our hands to exchange for the old Daoist's Red Gourd?'
Another little demon worriedly said, 'This probably won't work; our Red Gourd can only hold people, while theirs can hold the heavens—this would be a losing trade, and the old Daoist would certainly refuse.'
Another little demon, thinking himself clever, said, 'Exchanging Red Gourd for Red Gourd, the old Daoist certainly won't agree; but if we use our Red Gourd to trade for his Red Gourd and additionally attach our Jade Pure Bottle, making it a two-for-one exchange, the old Daoist will surely agree.'
Sun Wukong, having caught on, said, 'A two-for-one exchange? I was just waiting for you to say that.'
The clever little demon said to Sun Wukong, 'Old Daoist, can your Red Gourd really hold the heavens?'
Sun Wukong replied, 'As an old Daoist, how could I still be deceiving you little brats at my age?'
The somewhat slower little demon said, 'Old Daoist, if your Red Gourd cannot hold the heavens as you claim, then you are my son.'
'If it cannot hold the heavens, then I am your grandson,' Sun Wukong said.
The two little demons said, 'Then show us by doing it; we'll only trade after we see it. Hearing is false, seeing is believing.'
'Alright, what's so difficult about that. If you want to see, I will put the heavens into my Red Gourd and show you. First close your eyes, let me recite the true words, and put the heavens into my Red Gourd to show you whether it's real or fake.' Saying this, Sun Wukong began to recite the old Daoist's usual incantations, those incomprehensible true words, mumbling them――――
"The ancient masters of the Dao attained the mysterious penetration; profound and unknowable; only because it is unknowable; therefore we speak forcibly of it; like wading through a winter river; like fearing one's neighbors; solemn as a guest; like ice about to melt; sincere as uncarved wood; vast as a valley; obscure as muddy water; who can make the muddy cease through stillness?; the gradual clearing of stillness; who can find peace through longevity?; the gradual growth of movement; those who preserve this Dao do not wish to be full; therefore, because they do not wish to be full; they can be worn and not newly made."
As Sun Wukong mumbled those incantations the old Daoist chanted, the sky gradually grew dark..................
