Chapter 104: with translation of chapter title

~7 min read 1,364 words

Zheng Ren Gang wants to enter dreamland. Also Zheng Ren appears? On the opposite bed.

Chief Zheng asks, "How did you practice your surgery?"

Zheng Ren was cursing in his heart.

Pretending to sleep, ignoring this idiot!

"You haven't even been to college? You've never pulled an all-nighter chatting?" Su Yun kept talking to herself.

"I'm saying, you drank all night last night, even got blackout drunk, and you don't want to sleep a bit?" Zheng Ren couldn't help but bring up Su Yun's sore point.

"That bit of alcohol is nothing; I just wasn't prepared. Next time, I'll definitely let Chang Yue know what a real strong man is."

As expected, Su Yun didn't care at all about Zheng Ren's criticism, continuing to brag.

Zheng Ren was also convinced; as for people like Su Yun, her skin is thick enough.

"Chief Zheng, how did you practice your surgery?" Su Yun continued asking.

"Just take a look and you'll get it; before, there was no chance to do it." Zheng Ren gave a perfunctory answer.

"I didn't expect you to be like me, but you're too ordinary-looking, yet you can focus on studying. I'm miserable, having to deal with endless harassment every day." Su Yun felt somewhat resentful.

Zheng Ren was speechless again; he's good at killing the conversation, but even though Su Yun didn't say a word, he feels like not wanting to chat with her and has the urge to slap her.

After a moment of silence, Su Yun sighed deeply and said, "I really envy you; which man doesn't wish to freely soar in the sky, unrestrained? Unfortunately, I am destined to sink in the sea."

"The sea?" Zheng Ren didn't understand.

"The sea made of women; if I hadn't restrained myself, I would have already died in this vast ocean."

Zheng Ren truly didn't want to talk to this pretentious fool; he covered his head with a blanket, tightly plugged his ears, started meditating, and soon fell into a deep sleep.

Nothing was said all night.

The next day, the snow stopped and the sky cleared; it was another energetic day.

People going to work all happened to be late; the road was too slippery, causing severe traffic jams.

However, having anticipated this, today there weren't too many accidents; at most just minor scrapes.

At the time for early shift handover, Director Pan saw that few people had arrived, so he didn't wait and took Zheng Ren and Su Yun to start rounds.

Post-operative patients are stable; it seems that as long as they receive routine treatment, they can all be discharged home within a week.

The patients in the emergency ward were fine; Director Pan then took two of his subordinate doctors to the obstetrics department to check on patients with premature placental abruption.

Having seen it before, it's said that yesterday's bleeding had stopped; after a day or two of recovery, the patient would need to undergo induced labor.

The patient's surgery went smoothly, and they fell asleep on the hospital bed.

Family members thanked them profusely; they had already been frightened silly by Director Su's preoperative explanation, but upon learning that the uterus was preserved and the chance of future childbirth remained, they were overjoyed.

Director Pan stood in the hallway chatting with Director Su for a few moments, about to take Zheng Ren and Su Yun to the ICU to see whether the postoperative patients from yesterday had been extubated.

Postoperative pelvic fracture patients, after extubation, are to be transferred back to the Orthopedics Department for further treatment, whereas patients who underwent splenectomy and liver repair, after extubation, are to be transferred back to the Jizhenbingfang.

Just as they were about to leave, a violent vomiting sound came from the hallway.

"Doctor! Doctor!" a family member came running out in a panic, shouting loudly.

"Keep it down in the hospital," Director Su said while briskly walking toward the ward.

Zheng Ren felt the vomiting sound was wrong, too severe—this wasn't just pregnancy‑related nausea and dry heaves; it seemed as if even the stomach wanted to be thrown up.

He glanced at Director Pan, their eyes met, and after receiving the old director's permission, he followed Director Su to that ward.

The patient's face was deathly pale, hands trembling, turning her head sideways on the bed and retching repeatedly, yet she couldn't bring up any stomach contents.

She had probably already vomited everything out.

"Doctor, if it can't be helped… let's terminate the pregnancy," said the man who appeared to be the pregnant woman's husband, his eyes brimming with tears, his hands clenched tightly.

It was clear that both he and the pregnant woman strongly wanted to keep the child; otherwise, she would not have endured this long.

"I… I can still hold on, don't," the pregnant woman struggled to say a full sentence, then began vomiting violently again.

Perhaps that utterance had exhausted too much of her strength; this bout of vomiting was especially violent, her body bent like a shrimp, and were it not for the enlarged uterus, her head and feet could almost touch.

Zheng Ren frowned; just now, looking at the pregnant woman's face, her eyes were large and somewhat lively.

But the problem…

His gaze shifted upward to the upper‑right corner of the System Panel.

Sure enough, the patient's condition resembled his own assessment.

Zheng Ren furtively tugged at Director Su's sleeve and whispered, "Director Su, may we speak privately?"

"Huh?" Director Su sounded somewhat displeased.

While making rounds and dealing with a thorny patient, what could this Emergency Department doctor Zheng Ren possibly have to say that couldn't wait a moment?

She gave Zheng Ren a sharp look.

"Regarding the assessment of the condition, I have a somewhat immature idea," Zheng Ren continued, speaking in a voice only he and Director Su could hear.

Su Yun stood behind Zheng Ren, staring at the patient, as if thinking about something.

Director Su frowned and said, "Xiao Li, you communicate with the patient's family. If they agree, we can terminate the pregnancy."

Some pregnant women experience extremely severe vomiting during pregnancy that does not ease after twelve weeks; as gestation progresses, it grows worse, ultimately forcing them to choose termination.

The pregnant woman before us is exactly such a case.

She is an established patient; this is already the third time during pregnancy that she has suffered intolerable vomiting necessitating termination.

Director Su turned and left, with Zheng Ren closely following.

After stepping out the door, Director Su did not look back but went straight to her own office, opened the door, and went inside.

"Go ahead, what is it?" Director Su said, obviously somewhat displeased.

Had Zheng Ren not previously used an interventional method to rescue a patient with early placental abruption, preserving the uterus and showing a certain clinical standard, would the head of obstetrics at this top‑tier hospital even bother listening to the Inpatient Chief's nonsense?

Just kidding.

"Director Su, I think we should check the patient's thyroid function."

"Huh?"

"I think the patient likely has a thyroid function problem, a patient with gestational Graves disease." Zheng Ren Silence said, he did not soften his words because of Director Su's change in expression.

"Although the patient is not in a hurry, that kind of discomfort is absolutely harder to accept than sudden death."

"It is simply like an endless hell, ahead lies infinite despair."

"If we can diagnose earlier, we should diagnose earlier, to solve the problem."

"Polite talk… Zheng Ren really doesn't say that."

""Gestational Graves disease? A one in twenty‑thousand chance." Director Su pondered."

"Such a low‑probability disease is generally not considered. After all, there are countless patients experiencing nausea during pregnancy, and the causes of nausea are many; we can't possibly run every test."

"Nowadays society already accuses doctors of ordering unnecessary tests and charging extra fees. If we really had to check every possibility for each patient, we'd likely be sued to death by patients."

"Director Su fell silent, then asked: "Explain your reasoning.""

""The patient has big eyes.""

""Pfft…" Su Yun burst out laughing from behind."

""Big eyes—what the hell kind of reason is that!""
