Chapter 1083: 1056 No Eating in the Operating Room

~6 min read 1,149 words

Wu Hui was still looking at the ceiling of the operating room, feeling emotional about life.

Usually, amidst flowers and applause, one cannot feel life's bitter and miserable plight, but now it surges forth like a tide, quite sigh-worthy.

But in Wu Hui's view, it was only a moment; his feelings had just begun, and he hadn't thought about the days ahead when he heard Zheng Ren's voice: "The surgery is done; Su Yun will show you the appendix shortly."

Having said that, Zheng Ren tore off his sterile gown, turned, and walked out of the operating room.

Done?

Wu Hui wondered if receiving anesthesia twice in a row had caused some problem in his brain.

Anesthetic, you must not use too much, you must!

"Doctor Su, what's the situation?" Wu Hui saw the drape in front of him pulled away, his view instantly opened, and he knew the surgery was over. Having many doubts, he asked.

"The surgery is finished; here is your appendix." Su Yun removed the sterile drape, took the pathology basin, and showed Wu Hui the appendix inside.

It was thick and large, with a layer of green, white, and yellow mixed pus on its surface, and a hole in the appendix, so obvious, so conspicuous.

At the hole, a foul odor could faintly be smelled emanating from inside.

"Wasn't it supposed to be an intestinal wash?" That was Wu Hui's first thought.

Su Yun held the pathology basin like a scoop, tipped it, turning the appendix to various angles, presenting it to Wu Hui without any blind spots.

"Doctor Su, why wasn't the intestinal wash cleaned properly?" Wu Hui asked.

"Do you think it's like a washing machine, throwing it in to wash inside and out until spotless?" Su Yun's tone of contempt was especially rich, reaching the pinnacle of life, "This kind of appendectomy surgery demands a particularly high technical level; community hospital doctors can't perform it, so they can only use... according to your understanding, just disinfectant or what's called detergent to flush the abdominal cavity."

Saying that, Su Yun placed the basin holding the appendix onto the instrument table.

"Just flushed the outside; the internal inflammatory infection must be resisted by your own immunity."

"..." Wu Hui stared in shock.

"If you get past it, everything will be fine." Su Yun turned, tearing off his sterile gown.

"What if you can't get past it?" Wu Hui asked.

"Die, what else can be done."

"..."

"First comes continuous high fever, rising to about 40 degrees Celsius, then one day you suddenly fall into a coma, no longer feverish, temperature dropping to normal or slightly low." Su Yun earnestly explained and frightened Wu Hui, "After that, if a community hospital admits you, like those emergency patients you saw, you'll need intubation for a ventilator to assist breathing, then have urinary, gastric, and central venous lines inserted. They charge a hundred thousand dollars a day for treatment until you finally die."

Wu Hui was scared stupid.

What Su Yun described resembled some situations in the TV dramas he acted in, and was similar to the emergency patients he'd seen in the community hospital. Who would have thought this situation was only a step away from himself.

"Then..."

"Well then, does your sister want to see your appendix?" Su Yun said.

"No... not needed." Wu Hui suddenly thought of something and immediately asked: "Then how do Doctor Zheng and Doctor Su do it?"

"It's a crushing of technical skill; they can't do it, we can, how could you not think of such a simple thing? Right, next time we meet, don't call me Doctor Su, call Yun Ge'er." Su Yun said expressionlessly.

Wu Hui looked at Su Yun, who wore a sterile gown, his handsome face covered by the sterile cap and mask. Even so, a single mask could not fully conceal his handsome and heroic bearing.

"I'll send you back shortly, then we'll leave; keep in touch when we have time. Remember, next time we meet, you must call me Yun Ge'er." Su Yun urged, fearing Wu Hui would forget.

"I... can I eat?"

"Hungry?" Su Yun, who had already been walking out of the operating room, stopped upon hearing this, turned back to look at him.

"Mm." Wu Hui said honestly.

"Let me ask you a question."

"Go ahead."

"One day, there were three little lambs in the operating room. Suddenly a wolf in sheep's skin burst in; you say, how many lambs remain after half an hour?"

"One." Wu Hui, although he didn't know why Su Yun asked this children's story, still honestly gave his answer.

Only one wolf in sheep's skin remained, barely countable as a sheep.

Such a childish question has many answers. It seems this handsome fellow who insists on being called Yun Ge'er wants to embarrass me? But it doesn't matter; Wu Hui is graceful, he doesn't care much about such trifles.

"Three." Su Yun said: "Because eating is not allowed in the operating room."

Having said that, Su Yun turned and left.

"Uh..." Wu Hui froze, then wanted to laugh. The few days of being tormented by illness into an inhuman state were all dispelled at this moment.

Zheng Ren walked to the room outside to watch the surgery; Charles was looking at the doorway, waiting for his arrival.

"The surgery was done very well." Charles said, smiling as he saw Zheng Ren return.

"Basic surgery." Zheng Ren said somewhat shyly, "And the surgical instruments are especially handy."

"Please sit." Charles then sat down, while the others beside him remained standing like pillars, somewhat oppressive.

Zheng Ren didn't understand, but still sat down.

"Your surgical skill has already reached a high level. Although I don't approve of some moves, they still make some sense. It's clear you achieved everything through talent; it's not like someone taught you, everything seems to have been made in a mold."

Charles leisurely evaluated Zheng Ren's surgery.

As a master-level surgical doctor, having practiced appendectomy thousands of times, few in the world are qualified to critique Zheng Ren's appendectomy.

Charles, however, is one of them.

Zheng Ren did not argue with Charles as he had in the lecture hall that day; he merely listened attentively.

"Continue with surgery; I predict that open-cut surgical procedures will gradually exit the historical stage in twenty or thirty years. The Da Vinci robot will replace human hands, becoming the new surgical doctor. Or put another way, robotic arms will become the doctor's hands."

"But I finally give you this earnest advice, young person—relying on unparalleled surgical skill, or interventional skill, can earn you respect, but not a Nobel Prize."

"If you want a Nobel Prize, go do basic research. If you're interested, I have several directions here; after you make a choice, you can ask me anytime." Charles again advised Zheng Ren.

Very serious, very solemn.
