Chapter 1232: with translation of chapter title

~7 min read 1,295 words

Just thinking about it gives him a headache; Zheng Ren presses his hand lightly on his temple, feeling somewhat troubled.

"Zheng Lao Ban, this has nothing to do with you, don't worry about it." As he stepped out of the ICU ward, Director Zhang's steps halted, as if she had just made a momentous decision.

Zheng Ren knew that Director Zhang's words were meant kindly.

This situation is like a shit bucket; no matter how careful you are, you're bound to end up reeking.

She just wants to handle this on her own, not wanting to involve anyone else.

Zheng Ren smiled and said, "Director Zhang, what do you want to do?"

"I'll consult a lawyer to see the situation. If the law permits, I'm ready to overcome any difficulties and perform the surgery on the patient." Director Zhang's tone carried a resolute solemnity.

Even if the patient recovers afterward, making this decision is highly likely to cause trouble.

After all, the patient's father is the one who firmly opposes the surgery.

No matter the reason, even if the patient recovers well after surgery, the patient's father might think the hospital is just trying to make money and is forcing the patient onto the operating table.

Director Miao is still lying in the ICU, and Director Zhang's decision is certainly not timid.

"Director Zhang, since you've seen it, let's do it together." Zheng Ren sighed and said, "Frankly, don't take it to heart."

Director Zhang stared for a moment, wondering what that meant.

"Interventional surgery—no one does it better than me. If you want stability, having me perform the surgery is the best choice." Zheng Ren said calmly.

Su Yun covered her forehead.

"Is our boss crazy? Why is he taking this on himself? To snag this job, he's claiming he's the best at interventional surgery."

With such low emotional intelligence, making it to Inpatient Chief without getting beaten is a miracle—heaven must be blind. Who said being a doctor is hard? Anyone can do it. Su Yun looked at Zheng Ren, thinking resentfully.

Director Zhang looked at Zheng Ren with a strange gaze, wondering if he was the one who just said that.

Even if the patient recovers afterward, making this decision is highly likely to cause trouble.

Now continue scanning.

Zheng Lao Ban's skill is high, and Director Zhang acknowledges it. Although she hasn't personally seen him perform surgery, his status as a visiting professor at Mayo Clinic and his Nobel Prize nomination for a new technique leave her no choice but to admit his ability.

But.

Seeking neither fame nor profit,

Fighting over such an extremely difficult patient,

Are you out of your mind?

Although this is the fact, Director Zhang's heart felt a little warm.

"Let's first go see the patient's family and discuss it with them," Zheng Ren said.

"What about Doctor Mehari's side?" Su Yun knew this couldn't be resolved in just an hour or two. She still had to pick someone up this afternoon, and looking at the time, there were hardly any hours left.

"Communicating with the patient's family on this side is troublesome; the surgery probably won't happen today, and it won't have any impact."

"Zheng Lao Ban, this side…"

"Director Zhang, I think we should still get someone from the Medical Department. Even if it's not useful, it's better to keep some audiovisual records."

"Just audiovisual records aren't enough; I'll talk to the patient's family later and have them persuade the patient." Director Zhang's thoughts were drawn to solving the problem, following Zheng Ren's lead.

"Pay attention to the patient's emotional state and give the family a heads‑up in advance," Zheng Ren said.

"Hmm, I won't forget." Director Zhang asked, "What about the diagnosis?"

"I think a provisional diagnosis of ion channel disease would be appropriate, what do you think?" Zheng Ren said to Director Zhang.

"Sure, I'll update the medical record later and we'll unify the diagnosis—tentatively label it as heart ion channel disease." Director Zhang said.

After a brief exchange, they settled on an initial solution and would proceed step by step.

After leaving the ICU again, in the room where they explained the patient's condition to the family, the patient's loved one cried bitterly, pouring out her sorrow to Chang Yue with tears and snot.

Listening to the trivial family matters, Zheng Ren felt even more uneasy. As for Chang Yue, he silently praised the ward doctor who never smiles at senior physicians.

Letting it out is good; it eases the inner pressure and prevents extreme actions. Zheng Ren greatly admired Chang Yue's talent for conversation.

Thanks to Chang Yue's presence, Zheng Ren took off his mask, drew a deep breath of fresh air, and felt a little refreshed.

"Zheng Lao Ban, I'll handle this side; you go rest," Director Zhang said.

Dealing with communication with the patient's family, Zheng Ren knows he's not good at it. Moreover, having Su Yun—a ticking time bomb—standing nearby, he doesn't know when she'll snap and lash out at the family; it might be better to just leave.

He nodded and said, "Then I'll wait for news."

After saying that, he glanced at Chang Yue. Chang Yue was whispering to the patient's loved one; she instinctively lifted her head, blinked, and signaled to Zheng Ren that everything was fine.

Chang Yue is considerate; even if she doesn't smile at herself, it seems fine, and Zheng Ren's anxious feelings are largely eased.

Going downstairs with Su Yun, she said from behind Zheng Ren, "Boss, that was a bit rash."

"Is it okay?"

"Is that really okay? Lately your luck's been good, you can pull off any surgery, and you've gotten swollen-headed?" Su Yun blew out a breath, her black hair fluttering, and added, "If you keep going like that, our treatment team won't be far from disbanding."

"Being a doctor, there's nothing we can do." Leaving the ICU, Zheng Ren slowed his steps, speaking somewhat leisurely.

"No way? You're a doctor from the Tumor Intervention Department, doing general surgery, and if you've got compassion, you wouldn't say anything. Going to do cardiac intervention in this situation—are you basically courting death?" Su Yun said angrily.

"……" Zheng Ren stopped, scratched his head, lost in thought.

"Last night I asked you, what did you say?" Su Yun looked at Zheng Ren with contempt.

"If it's about surgery, Director Zhang is here—just helping out with ideas."

"Bullshit! You almost told Director Zhang that you're the hotshot in interventional procedures, trying to swoop in and take over the surgery. Do you think I don't know what you're thinking?" Su Yun's voice echoed in the fire escape, buzzing.

"What do we do then?" Zheng Ren spread his hands and asked, "Got a cigarette?"

Su Yun stayed silent, tossed him a cigarette, and lit it for him.

After a long silence, Zheng Ren suddenly spoke up.

"I only know that in this world, many people keep their kindness, toward themselves and others. I don't have much ability, but if I can protect even one person, that's enough."

"You're definitely going to tell me to check on Director Miao, but forget that. I also believe many doctors still working nowadays have gone through wavering, even giving up, but surely, like me, they've encountered one warm story after another. So, let's persist a little longer."

Zheng Ren said calmly, and at that moment, faced with an extremely difficult patient, he suddenly understood.

……

Note 1: Forgot where I saw it, at the time I saved it, put it in my phone, as encouragement for myself. This is a little doctor's Inner Mind monologue, hope he/she is still okay, original intention remains.

If it's an infringement, please let me know; I'll work out a sentence myself.
