Chapter 151: 0148 Bare Hands Simmering Soup
She greeted Zheng Renhe and Su Yun, then Xie Yiren hurried straight to the duty room.
Zheng Ren arrived at the duty room; Xie Yiren had already opened the lunch box and was taking out the dishes one by one, placing them on the table.
The lunch box wasn't big, but it held a universe within. Zheng Ren didn't know its specific material or function, yet when one lunch box was opened, it turned out to be three times larger, revealing the meticulous thought behind it.
Won't that be too troublesome? Just looking at the lunch box made Zheng Ren feel full.
Xie Yiren's eyes shone with respect and delight for the food as she carefully took out the lunch box, saying one by one: "Yue Jie brought especially good eggs, a shame they've all been eaten. I tried stir-frying a dish and made an egg-flower soup; give it a try."
One dish was divided into three palm-sized plates. A delicate casserole looked cold on the outside, but when the lid was lifted, a wisp of warm, fragrant steam rose, instantly filling the air with a faint aroma.
"Come on, come on, eat, eat!" Xie Yiren urged, her eyes full of little stars.
In her view, as long as there's good food, the world is full of light.
This is the most basic quality of a foodie—a full love of life—unfortunately Zheng Ren doesn't understand.
Although he didn't understand, Zheng Ren had a strong will to survive; he immediately took off his white coat, washed his hands, then sat properly and began to eat.
The rice was especially fragrant, chewy but not hard, just right.
Golden-yellow scrambled country eggs with scallions gave off a rich aroma; the scallions were cooked just right, masking the greasy feel from the oil the eggs had absorbed while still letting the eggs' own fragrance shine through.
His index finger twitched.
"Hey, not bad." Su Yun first praised it, then without ceremony sat down and began to eat heartily.
"Of course." Xie Yiren went to wash her hands, returned, sat lightly, picked up her chopsticks, took a piece of egg, and chewed it gently.
"These eggs are mine—I whipped them myself, no whisk." Xie Yiren was pleased, "I've always thought eggs beaten with a whisk lack soul."
"Did you add yellow wine?" Su Yun asked.
"Just a bit; the alcohol content is almost nonexistent, to remove the faint fishy smell from the eggs." Xie Yiren glowed with a holy light; though the dishes were simple, she remained full of love, tasting them carefully.
Zheng Ren picked up a chopstickful of egg and ate it with rice, making munching sounds.
"Chewing on peonies like an ox—what a waste," Su Yun remarked sarcastically.
"The eggs are well beaten." Xie Yiren ate a piece of egg, then boasted without reserve: "I use little salt, so they're a bit mild—don't mind."
"Just right, just right." Zheng Ren had already eaten half his bowl of rice, and the small plate in front of him was half empty.
At this rate, when they finish the rice, the dishes will be just about done.
Because Zheng Ren ate with relish, Xie Yiren's eyes curved into crescent moons as she smiled.
"I added a pinch of white sugar, which raises the temperature at which the egg whites set from heat, thus slowing the heating; moreover, sugar retains water, increasing the eggs' tenderness—doesn't that make them delicious?" Xie Yiren said.
"Huh." While speaking, Zheng Ren had already finished his rice and dishes and began to ladle out the soup.
For a foodie, the highest praise is to gulp down the rice in one breath, leaving no time to speak.
"How can you cook?" Immediately after finishing his meal, Zheng Ren finally thought of that question.
"Sometimes the food outside gets boring, so I experiment on my own. I can make many more dishes; if you have time, come to my place and I'll cook for you." Xie Yiren smiled brightly.
"Chief Zheng has no time; he's stuck in the emergency room all year, so we can go in his place." The sharp-tongued effeminate man seized the chance to jab.
"In a few days we'll go to the capital; they'll likely have you stay as inpatient chief." Zheng Ren remained calm and composed.
"If you make me inpatient chief, I'll quit." Su Yun showed no weakness, "Being inpatient chief means treating people like livestock. Besides, if it weren't for coming to the emergency room to watch you do surgery, I'd probably have quit already."
"If you quit, what would you do?" Xie Yiren asked.
"A pet hospital." Su Yun said, "It's simple—you get to see cats and dogs every day, the atmosphere is harmonious, far better than the hospital."
"Ah!" Stars sparkled again in Xie Yiren's eyes.
"Hey." Zheng Ren tapped his chopsticks; whether Su Yun leaves has nothing to do with him, but if someone took his equipment nurse, he'd have to fight Su Yun to the death—"You go if you want to go, don't fool Xie Yiren."
"You make it sound like the hospital is so great." Su Yun snorted.
"Xie Yiren is so pure; going to a pet hospital, she couldn't even do one surgery a week—how boring, right, Xie Yiren?"
Xie Yiren nodded, kept eating, and wore a satisfied expression.
"You're really lucky." Su Yun looked at Xie Yiren's expression, gave a heh laugh, "What are you going to the capital for?"
"Last time, Professor Pei, who came to promote surgery, and a few senior experts from the Intervention Department devised a new procedure and asked me to go."
"What procedure?"
"I don't know; I'll find out when I get there." Zheng Ren didn't care, thinking his own intervention skills were at master level and he could probably lend a hand.
Experts like Professor Pei at that age have long passed the golden age for surgery; they usually let their graduate and PhD students perform the operations while they give guidance.
To say their level surpasses Professor Pei's, Zheng Ren wouldn't dare; but those graduate and PhD students would have to be stronger than him to be believable.
"I want to go along, and while I'm at it, see how those annoying folks are developing now." Su Yun said.
Zheng Ren felt a chill—how could he go to the capital if Su Yun also had to follow?
"What annoying people?" Xie Yiren asked.
"Their level isn't higher than mine, yet they always think they can surpass me. I don't know who gave them that confidence."
Zheng Ren muttered to himself, "Your confidence is also pretty inexplicable."
Halfway through the meal, Zheng Ren's phone rang.
Heart rate 110 beats per minute.
"Hello."
"Mm, okay, I'll go down and check."
After a brief update, Zheng Ren hung up, "There's a gallbladder inflammation patient in the emergency room; I'll go see. You keep eating slowly—if surgery is needed, I'll notify you via WeChat."
Having said that, Zheng Ren donned his white coat and left in a hurry.
"Just finished eating, and you're rushing off—aren't you afraid of appendicitis?" Su Yun continued to eat at her leisure.
Xie Yiren sped up her eating, making munching sounds.
"Why are you in such a hurry too?"
"I think I'll have to do surgery; I need to go prepare upstairs." Xie Yiren said, mouth full of rice, mumbling.
Sure enough, within a few Minute, both of their phones rang at the same time.
The patient was diagnosed with acute cholecystitis, requiring Shou Bing. Zheng Ren notified in the WeChat group, prepare for the Shou Bing as soon as possible.
"Put the things here for now, I'm going to the Operating Room." After finishing eating, Xie Yiren left in a hurry.
