Chapter 1617: 1564 Corpse in the Wall
Taking the elevator up to the 25th floor, the elevator stopped, and the door facing it was open.
2502, this is Miao Xiaohua's home.
Her parents and her cousin's parents went separately to consult someone, and no one was home. Tonight only Miao Xiaohua and her cousin were there, so she felt a bit scared.
Originally I wanted to call and chat to ease the night's loneliness, but I didn't expect Xiao Yi Ren to actually be in Hai Cheng.
Xie Yiren was still relatively relaxed, probably fine, just scaring herself. As long as she could hold on, she'd definitely be okay.
But……
Miao Xiaohua stood at the doorway with a panicked expression, and a more terrifying sound came from inside the house.
Fortunately, there were no neighbors on either side.
Hai Cheng's economy was deteriorating day by day; anyone with some ability who could leave had done so. This area counted as downtown, but few people lived in the newly built high-rises.
The two neighboring households had bought houses, but hadn't even done any renovation.
The peephole on the main door was empty; as the elevator door opened, a faint 'whoo-whoo' wind noise came from that side.
The sobbing wind sounded like a haunting; Xie Yiren's mustered courage instantly turned to ash.
It's so cold.
"Xiao Hua, what's wrong?" Xie Yiren felt a chill, grabbed Miao Xiaohua's hand, and hurried into the house.
The door slammed shut with a bang, and only then did Xie Yiren feel a little better.
But Miao Xiaohua didn't think so; at the instant the door closed, her fearful expression grew heavier, as if the dim lighting and the hallway with the sobbing wind felt safer.
"Xiao Hua, what's wrong?" Xie Yiren asked.
One could feel her hand was very cold, icy.
"Yi Ren, it's great that you're back." Miao Xiaohua hugged Xie Yiren's arm, almost bursting into tears.
She still felt unsafe, hugging Xie Yiren tighter, her body trembling involuntarily.
"What on earth is happening?" Xie Yiren tried to stay calm, asking softly.
"My sister has been saying all night that the house is haunted, that someone died here before." As she spoke, Miao Xiaohua leaned closer to Xie Yiren, her voice growing softer, as if afraid that even a slightly louder sound would attract the ghost's attention.
Xie Yiren felt her hair stand on end.
At this moment, she regretted deeply.
"I should have brought Zheng Ren along; he's not here, why am I so panicked?"
"Talk of hauntings sounds so scary."
"Don't be scared, we're materialists. After the founding of the country, animals aren't allowed to become spirits, let alone talk about ghosts." Xie Yiren said haphazardly, soothing Miao Xiaohua's emotions.
Most importantly, she wanted to soothe her own emotions.
"Don't come over! Don't come over!" a hoarse, exhausted shout came from inside the house, that kind of panic definitely not feigned.
Despair had already flooded the shouting person like a tide.
Xie Yiren and Miao Xiaohua's clasped hands tightened together unconsciously.
"Xiao Hua, don't worry, this is a newly built house. No one could have lived here before; I remember it was just a bare shell, what's there to fear." Xie Yiren's upper and lower teeth clicked, producing a crisp 'ka-ka-ka' sound.
"Yi Ren, my sister said there's a corpse in the wall. Workers had a dispute, killed someone, buried him in the wall, then poured cement over it." Miao Xiaohua was just a few seconds away from bursting into tears.
In an instant, Xie Yiren felt the lights flicker twice, the wall trembled slightly, as if a cement-soaked zombie were about to burst out.
Filled with despair, she covered her mouth with her hand, afraid to scream and attract the zombie's attention.
She wanted to break free from Miao Xiaohua's hand to make a phone call.
But Miao Xiaohua's hand gripped hers tightly, leaving Xie Yiren no chance to struggle free.
"Easy, I'll call Zheng Ren to come over." Xie Yiren whispered near Miao Xiaohua's ear.
"Yah!" Miao Xiaohua seemed too nervous, jumping at Xie Yiren's voice.
She jumped to the side, her back hitting the wall switch, and the house instantly plunged into darkness.
"..." Even the usually mild-tempered Xie Yiren wanted to curse.
But that was secondary; plunged into darkness, she heard a faint, trembling sound from inside the house.
"You... you... came out?!"
Her legs gave way, and Xie Yiren sat down on the ground.
"Where are those warm big hands?" She deeply regretted, regretted again, why didn't she bring Zheng Ren along!
How foolish!
But who could have imagined it would be this scary.
Xie Yiren held her breath, clenched her hand over her mouth, daring not to make a sound.
"I'm not the one who killed you; the murderer is outside, go take a look."
In the darkness, the sound from inside the house calmed instead, speaking lightly.
Xie Yiren's whole body kept trembling; she didn't know when her grip on Miao Xiaohua's hand loosened, both hands covering her mouth. She curled up, feeling safer that way.
No, I have to tell Zheng Ren.
She summoned her courage, took out her phone; at that moment, Xie Yiren had a thought.
In this pitch-black place, once the phone emits light, wouldn't she see a disfigured face before even making the call?
This is damn scarier than a horror movie.
"Yes, just outside, go take a look." Miao Xiaohua's sister whispered, urging some presence inside the house to come out and find Miao Xiaohua and Xie Yiren.
She couldn't wait any longer; Xie Yiren took a deep breath, letting her emotions stabilize.
But wanting to shake off the panic wasn't that easy.
Her hands shook like sifting chaff, her back continually hitting the wall.
She couldn't tell whether it was her body trembling and twitching nonstop, or the wall itself beginning to move, with some nameless entity inside trying to burst out.
After an unknown amount of time, Xie Yiren vaguely heard footsteps coming out from the inner room amid Miao Xiaohua's sobbing.
Can't wait any longer!
Even if I were to die the next second, I must hurry to call Zheng Ren.
That honest, simple, warm, reliable face gave Xie Yiren strength; she picked up her phone and opened it, trembling.
In total darkness, the moment the phone turned on, Miao Xiaohua let out a bone‑chilling scream.
Xie Yiren didn't bother to see what had happened; she found Zheng Ren's number and called.
Pick up… pick up…
Zheng Ren didn't delay; the phone rang only once before he answered.
"Hello? Yi Ren."
Hearing his deep voice, Xie Yiren's tears burst forth.
An indescribable sense of grievance mingled with fear.
"Don't cry, don't cry, what's wrong?" Zheng Ren's voice grew urgent.
"Save me..." Xie Yiren had just uttered two words when a cold hand reached out, grabbing her hand in the faint glow of the phone screen.
A deathly pale face appeared before Xie Yiren.
"Ah—" Xie Yiren screamed.
At the same moment, the phone fell to the ground, hit something, and instantly went black.
Just as she was staring at the phone, she suddenly lost all light, and Xie Yiren's eyes were instantly blinded.
"Are you looking for someone to come kill me?" a voice sounded in the room.
