Chapter 1981: 1911 Allergic to Dental Treatment
After eating and drinking to their fill, Zheng Ren and company set off back to Hai Cheng.
Gao Shaojie didn't go with them, since he had already decided to go to Di Du; with his son's college entrance exam still a month away, there were countless trivial matters to take care of at home.
Hua Ying Ying didn't go directly either; after all, her pants were all wet, so going like that wouldn't look good.
In the car, Su Yun looked at Zheng Ren, who sat up front with his eyes narrowed as if asleep, and chuckled, 'Boss, you're really thoughtful.'
'Can't let Xiao Feng spend his own money buying all the supplies and carry them around.' Zheng Ren said casually, 'It's just making money; it's not that hard.'
'Tsk tsk, you're the one saying that. A year ago, you were scraping by on a monthly salary of two or three thousand. So poor you lived in a doghouse, and even instant noodles grew mold.' Su Yun said disdainfully.
'Times are different now.' Zheng Ren said, 'Xiao Feng does his work conscientiously; anything I can think of, he basically has. What he doesn't have is only a minority.'
'Is this approach of yours considered buying people's hearts?'
'Probably not. I think buying people's hearts means gaining favor with those you don't know well; Xiao Feng's case is just what he deserves.' Zheng Ren said frankly.
'Let's head back. It's a shame the director can't drink; otherwise I'd definitely drag him into drinking until tomorrow morning.'
'Don't joke, how old is the director? He's still sick. Staying up late and drinking—you really dare to think that.' Zheng Ren said, 'I'll definitely send the Maotai to the director's house.'
'Don't worry, the director values his life more than you do.' Su Yun said, 'People in their thirties and forties don't realize it, but once past sixty, most truly fear death.'
'When can we see Yanran's mother?' Zheng Ren switched topics with unusual speed, leaping about in a way that was hard to fathom.
However, Su Yun had long grown accustomed to this; his thinking was even more scattered.
'If you're anxious, just go take a look.' Su Yun said, 'Anyway we need to… can we fit in the car?'
'Squeezing in is fine.' Xie Yiren said.
'Sure, I don't mind. Afterward we'll go to the director's place to deliver the liquor, then have the director eat.' Su Yun calculated, 'Didn't you call Director Sun about his surgery?'
'No.'
'Then forget it; I guess the patient probably ran off to Di Du or Modu for treatment.'
Chatting all the way, upon entering Hai Cheng, Zheng Ren first called Director Pan to report his itinerary and safety, saying he would first go to Chu Yanran's place.
Xie Yiren, familiar with the route, arrived at a residential compound, parked the car, opened the trunk, and prepared to carry out the clothes.
'I'll get it, I'll get it.' Zheng Ren hurriedly grabbed a few bags before Xie Yiren could.
They said each person bought one outfit, but there were actually seven or eight bags; although Zheng Ren had gone shopping with Xie Yiren, he still didn't know what was inside.
When reading books, Zheng Ren could remember everything at a glance, but when it came to lipstick shades and clothing, he had no concept whatsoever.
Never mind what they are; I'm just a laborer, and Zheng Ren's self-positioning is still quite standard.
Zheng Ren's left and right hands were practically full as he carried things upstairs.
As the elevator doors opened, Chu Yan zhi came bounding up, hugging Xie Yiren and Chang Yue; she looked like a dog that had broken free of its leash.
'No shift today?' Zheng Ren asked.
'I'm covering a shift.' Chu Yan zhi said, 'Knowing you were coming back, what would we do without shift coverage? Chief Zheng, you attract patients; with you back, no one dares to take the shift.'
……
Zheng Ren was speechless. Is this my nature? It seems not my fault; they just forced it on me.
After changing shoes and entering the house, Zheng Ren first asked, 'How's the mother?'
'She's gone to play mahjong.' Chu Yan zhi took the bags from his hands, overjoyed, and pulled Xie Yiren toward the bedroom.
It doesn't look like a serious illness; being able to play mahjong, is that even considered an issue?
'Please sit, Chief Zheng.' Chu Yanran, being more composed, stayed in the living room to greet Zheng Ren and Su Yun.
'Yanran, is your unit busy now?' Zheng Ren asked.
'The unit's fine, President Wang…'
'How long has the mother's peripheral neuropathy been numb?' Zheng Ren merely made a polite remark, not really wanting an answer; before Chu Yanran could say a few words, he cut her off.
'Uh…'
'Boss, you're going too far.' Su Yun said.
'Coming home isn't just to check on the mother, who would have thought she wasn't home.' Zheng Ren felt a bit regretful.
'My mother just feels a bit uncomfortable after standing up from playing mahjong for a long time; it's nothing serious.' Chu Yanran smiled, 'Chief Zheng, Yun Ge'er, would you like an apple?'
'No thanks. If there's nothing wrong, let's go see the director later.' Zheng Ren said.
'It was just casual talk in the group; I didn't expect Chief Zheng to take it so seriously.' Chu Yanran said, 'Are you busy in Di Du?'
'Not bad. Aside from the mother's feet getting numb from sitting too long, is there anything else?'
Zheng Ren never strayed from the topic of illness in three sentences, and Su Yun was also quite impressed.
Chu Yanran smiled. Chief Zheng is so attentive; I couldn't possibly drive him away. This person has this quirk—probably from being the inpatient chief too long, his mind has developed a few issues.
She simply stood up, took the MRI films and other reports, and handed them to Zheng Ren.
Zheng Ren didn't stand on ceremony either; he took them and first looked at the MRI films.
There's nothing wrong with the lumbar spine; viewing the films in person is clearer than on a phone, and Zheng Ren confirmed this with a quick glance.
Chu Yanran's mother isn't that old either, under fifty. Zheng Ren still remembers that time when she kept saying she had a toothache, but it was actually a myocardial infarction.
'How is the mother's myocardial infarction?'
'After the surgery she's fine; now she takes medicine every day, nagging about taking it until she's sick of it.'
'What medicines does she take?'
Chu Yanran, helpless, had to go to her mother's bedroom and take out the little medicine box.
Her mother was clearly an orderly person; the several medicines were neatly arranged: atorvastatin, aspirin, beta-blocker metoprolol, isosorbide dinitrate, trimetazidine, and a small white bottle which Zheng Ren glanced at and identified as metronidazole.
She's taking all these medicines—really too comprehensive.
But taking them all is good; it's far better than having the stent clog.
When coronary stents and bypass surgeries were first performed, some doctors at local hospitals didn't understand either, telling patients they didn't need to take medicine after the operation.
The result was that within a few months the blood vessels clogged again.
Regular medication after the procedure is still necessary; Zheng Ren feels reassured about this, after all, there are two top talents in critical care medicine at home.
"What is metronidazole for?" Zheng Ren asked casually.
"My mom still often has a toothache." Chu Yanran said, "Otherwise, when we first met, I wouldn't have almost been delayed."
"Why don't you go get it fixed?"
"She's timid; just hearing the buzzing sound of dental work makes her sensitive." Chu Yanran covered her mouth and laughed.
……
……
Note: I have a Fear of this buzzing sound that arises from the bottom of my heart.
