Chapter 240: 0234 Ancient Times to Present, Largely the Same (3/5)
0234 Ancient Times to Present, Largely the Same (3/5)
There was still a while until lunchtime, Director Kong invited Zheng Ren to the small cafeteria, but Zheng Ren was somewhat absent‑minded and refused Director Kong's invitation in what he considered a tactful way.
They agreed to meet at two in the afternoon to visit patients in the urology department, after which Zheng Ren and Su Yun left the intervention department.
Feng Xu Hui was waiting at the door as expected, but Zheng Ren drove him away with an unusually harsh tone.
"What should we eat for lunch?" Zheng Ren asked Su Yun for the first time.
Su Yun remained silent.
"Just grab something to eat," Zheng Ren said.
Leaving the inpatient department, the north wind was bitter and the sky was azure.
Since last year, the sky over the capital often shows blue skies and white clouds.
This beauty did not improve Zheng Ren's mood; each had something on their mind, and they walked on in silence.
They entered a snack shop near the hospital that Zheng Ren had visited before, where he had treated Feng Xu Hui to noodles.
They casually ordered two bowls of noodles, Zheng Ren looked at Su Yun opposite him and said, "Your behavior today is off."
"Was it the surgery? I thought it was perfect," Su Yun said, her black hair hanging over her forehead swaying.
"You know what I mean, don't interrupt," Zheng Ren said.
Su Yun continued to stay silent, looking as if she were preparing to play dead to the end.
"I remember that after we met, you only mentioned Director Fu once, right at the beginning, when you said the elders in your family are just elders and have nothing to do with you." Zheng Ren didn't mind, and went on: "I originally thought you were just bragging, a petty, spiteful effeminate man, but after getting to know you for so long, I see you were right."
Given Su Yun's personality, if it were another time, she would have retorted to Zheng Ren long ago.
Strangely, he didn't speak at all, just lowered his head and stared blankly at the small restaurant's tabletop.
It seemed as if there was an unparalleled beauty there, and as if there were piles of gold.
"Being called the rising star of cardiothoracic surgery is far more impressive than being the vice president of Haicheng City First Hospital. Today you told Bu Ruotian that you're my assistant and also Director Fu's nephew—are you afraid Bu Ruotian will take revenge on your uncle?" Zheng Ren crossed his fingers, placed them on the table, and analyzed in a low voice.
"Detective Zheng Ren?" As the truth drew nearer, Su Yun could no longer hold back and spoke sarcastically.
"It's a simple matter, no need for complicated schemes. In college I memorized the Zizhi Tongjian and also the Twenty‑Four Histories. Throughout history, things are pretty much the same." Zheng Ren laughed: "You know why I quietly ended up in the emergency department, got scolded bloody, and still didn't spill the beans?"
"It's completely unnecessary, and you're not stupid," Su Yun said, lifting her head to meet Zheng Ren's eyes calmly.
"Hmm, that's exactly right," Zheng Ren said.
"You're very smart, only slightly behind me," Su Yun praised.
"……"
Damn, this guy is always narcissistic no matter the time; Zheng Ren felt helpless inside.
"Too bad my uncle is an idiot," Su Yun sighed. "On my mother's side, there's only this one male, spoiled rotten, and he's turned into a complete waste."
As a junior doctor, directly calling the business vice president a waste sounds rather strange.
But Zheng Ren deeply believed it.
Zheng Ren's words seemed to unlock Su Yun's tongue; she was no longer silent and continued: "After the incident, I felt something was off. This isn't something you can sweep under the rug by burying your head like an ostrich."
"Hmm, right."
"Too bad my foolish uncle thought being a standing vice president was some big position. Anyway, Bu Ruotian's fine, his surgery went well, he shut up a few of you, and the matter was considered settled. He never imagined Bu Ruotian would retaliate afterward?!" Saying this, Su Yun grew somewhat angry.
"If it were twenty years ago, your uncle would at least have been hospitalized by now," Zheng Ren laughed.
"It's the same now," Su Yun shook her head. "Since ancient times, experts kill without a blade—reassign the post, leave it idle for years, let everyone forget the incident completely, then end it with a car accident. Too bad my uncle just can't see things clearly."
"Is that why you came to the emergency department?" Zheng Ren asked with a smile.
"What then?" Su Yun said helplessly. "I told him, but he wouldn't listen. For my mother's sake, I have to do something. Or do you think I'm just begging to be transferred to the emergency department because I'm good‑looking?"
"Because I'm good at surgery."
"You're annoying when you're full of yourself," Su Yun said. "There are four people involved; the anesthesiologist happens to be going abroad, the other two are in the emergency department, so I came to check on you. As for Bu Ruotian's side, I have no good options, but I thought maybe I could start with you and get a slim chance."
"Hmm. If I were Bu Ruotian, I definitely wouldn't let your uncle off the hook. So back then I wasn't in a hurry, and I hadn't even considered quitting."
As for me, I may look simple‑minded, but I actually hold grudges. I could leave anytime, but I need to see Director Fu's fate with my own eyes before I can walk away peacefully." Zheng Ren said lightly: "I just didn't expect you to jump out today."
"The timing is just right; if I didn't speak up, doing surgery here would feel pointless. If I stay silent today, I'll just go back to persuade my uncle to resign, then open a pet clinic," Su Yun said.
"What do you think now?"
"Boss, find a chance to help me mediate," Su Yun said for the first time, addressing him seriously without joking. "Resigning is the bottom line. As for compensation, I don't think the Bu family will need it. If he backs down, he'll still come after you later."
"What if it doesn't work?"
"Do you know for sure the patient will survive before you operate?"
"No."
"So just do your best," Su Yun said. "I'll go back and lay it out clearly to my uncle; if he still has a shred of reason, he'll listen to me. If not…"
"What do you want then?"
"Boss, are you interested in a pet clinic?"
"Hurry up and eat; we have to go see patients in urology shortly." Zheng Ren lifted his bowl and began to eat with a slurping sound.
"As long as you have no objections," Su Yun said, uttering a nonsensical phrase.
"The so‑called rising star of cardiothoracic surgery has come to be my assistant, feeling wronged—what opinion could I still have?" Zheng Ren laughed: "Can you relax now?"
"I'm relieved, you bastard—you're not a good person either. Confirming that puts my mind at ease." After saying that, Su Yun also started eating her noodles.
The little schemes and tricks inside weren't spelled out; they left it at that. Both were sensible people—some things needn't be said so clearly.
Just one line—killing without a blade—is enough.
Soon they finished their meal, saw that it was still early, and went back to the guesthouse to rest. At 1:30 p. m., they each left their rooms and saw Feng Xu Hui, Manager Feng, standing anxiously at the door, watching over them.
