Chapter 2454: 2368 Seeing Through the Mortal World, Still Old and Without Support

~7 min read 1,308 words

This result was not much different from what Zheng Ren had imagined.

He didn't go to persuade the patient again; since it was the patient's own decision, let it be that way. Some things cannot be forced—the more you do, the more wrong; the more you say, the more wrong.

"Then wait a moment, I'll finish the note on this side and call you when done," Chang Yue said.

Chang Yue said something to the resident doctor, and the two went to the doctor's office at the Community Hospital.

Zheng Ren knew she was uneasy, fearing there might be an error in the medical record. Besides, they needed to leave sufficient audiovisual material under video surveillance to avoid being blamed later.

Upon arriving at the doctor's office, Zheng Ren sat in a corner, quietly watching Chang Yue and the resident doctor handle the paperwork.

Zheng Ren had seen many patients who should not have given up but did.

Such scenes play out daily in the hospital; when Zheng Ren decided to go to Xinglin Yuan to do a livestream, it was precisely to reduce such occurrences a little.

Within his own capabilities, he tried to minimize the number of people who gave up treatment because of money, or such matters.

The patient he encountered now was, in some sense, different from before.

The patient himself had lost the courage and hope to continue living; his whole life had come to an end for him.

"Old and without support?" Zheng Ren thought of that phrase, but immediately dismissed it from his mind. No matter what adjective, it was all the same; he no longer wanted to think about it.

For such things, doing one's best is enough; thinking too much easily turns it into something artistic.

After writing the medical record, repeatedly correcting it, and preparing the items for the patient's family to sign, adjusting the video surveillance and synchronous audio recording, and making all preparations, Chang Yue then called the patient's three relatives over.

She first explained the situation; this matter was rather special, and the procedures were a bit cumbersome.

However, the three family members were all very happy; the patient's eldest daughter and the third party had uncontainable joy shining on their faces.

Chang Yue worried that the cumbersome procedures would upset the family, but that didn't happen. She printed the signature documents in triplicate, each person glancing at one.

Addressing doubts, Chang Yue explained each point one by one. Then, taking the ink pad, she went to the ward to have the patient sign the decision to withdraw, after which the three present family members each signed and pressed their handprints.

For the doctors, there was hardly any latent problem left.

But Zheng Ren looked at the bright red handprint on the consent form for automatic discharge, and instead of feeling relieved, a faint sense of regret welled up in his heart.

"Boss, how did you come over here?" Su Yun walked in laughing, "Isn't the Fifth Edition of External Medicine enough for you to read?"

Zheng Ren saw Su Yun beaming with spring-like joy, shook his head and smiled.

"What's this? You all look grim—did I cause a medical accident just by not being in the hospital for a day? Besides, I wasn't absent; I just went to watch a surgery." Su Yun blew a breath, her black hair fluttering in front of her forehead.

"No." Zheng Ren briefly explained what had just happened with the patient.

As they were chatting, the patient's family borrowed a wheelchair and pushed the patient out of the ward. Su Yun waved at the patient, feeling not a bit of sadness.

"You look so happy—did the intraoperative navigation system get a signal?" Zheng Ren asked.

"If you're not happy, do you have to cry?" Su Yun said disdainfully: "Such things in the hospital shouldn't be too common—how poor is your mental fortitude? Besides, that guy has lived enough in this lifetime; there's nothing to regret."

"Don't doubt it—he's gone through vicissitudes and seen through the affairs of the mortal world." Su Yun laughed: "Otherwise, if he had money, he could hire lawyers, nurses, and caregivers and still live a while longer. I understand his feeling—too lonely; that's just how the mortal world is."

Zheng Ren smiled and said nothing.

"Why did you rush back?" Chang Yue asked.

"With you saying that, I can't come back?"

"Speak properly." Chang Yue gave Su Yun a cold glance, pushing up the temple of her glasses with her right index finger.

"I just heard Xiao Cao say a streamer ate a pile of food and burst his stomach; I went to glance at the surgery. Then I thought of the preliminaries of the World Big Eater Championship—our side doesn't have a livestream, so a friend brought back some video footage for me." Su Yun said with a hehe laugh.

"What's there to watch?" Zheng Ren wondered, completely unable to grasp what Su Yun liked about it.

"Life! Boss, life!" Su Yun raised both arms, making an exaggerated gesture: "Can't you have a little love for life?"

"I do have love for it—the Big Eater competition… who was the champion again?"

"Takashi Kobayashi and Sonya Thomas! Born rivals, lifelong opponents!" Su Yun said.

"Oh, I remember now." Zheng Ren had no interest in such fragmented information, saying it somewhat indifferently.

"Can you at least be a little interested?"

"No, it's said that competitive eaters' stomachs can stretch up to 66 times, which harms the body." Zheng Ren said very calmly.

"Let's see how they eat; in case we ever encounter a patient with a related stomach rupture." Su Yun pulled Zheng Ren and Chang Yue to the demonstration classroom.

"Here, I'll look for the email." Su Yun opened the computer; this time she used the Community Hospital's demonstration classroom not for a consultation or teaching, but just to watch the excitement.

Zheng Ren watched the busy Su Yun, laughing and crying at once.

"Big eater, I saw a video on Bilibili where someone ate ten buckets of spicy noodles in sixteen minutes." Chang Yue said from her seat.

"Yeah, I know that one—competitive eater Miko." Su Yun said, "It's different from what we're watching today; Miko is still human, while what we're watching are non-humans."

Saying that, he paused a moment.

"Just like the boss, humans performing surgery can at most reach this level of mine. But the boss attains this level effortlessly; in world competitions, they're all these non-humans." Su Yun said offhand.

"You wouldn't be looking for inspiration, would you?" Zheng Ren asked.

"How could that be? I don't need to." Su Yun said, "Although you're an evil dragon, you'll eventually become the medical field's academic tyrant, but there will always be dragon-slaying warriors brave enough to step forward and fight you—like me."

Zheng Ren laughed; Su Yun's metaphor was extremely inappropriate. Even if he were an evil dragon, relying solely on Su Yun's individual strength could not defeat him.

"All right." Su Yun found the video and clicked play.

The demonstration classroom at the Community Hospital was built with heavy investment by Lin JiaoJiao; watching the video there is far better than at home.

"Sixty-six times? Really?" Chang Yue said, disbelieving.

"I've watched an overseas livestream show—Moezaki, an idol artist and part-time competitive eater, champion of the Big Eater competition from 2015 to 2017." Su Yun saw the video's opening was an interview, not in a hurry, so she chatted with Chang Yue.

"Can an idol artist also be a competitive eater?"

"Of course, a variety show recorded her eating small cups of soba noodles." Su Yun said, "That soba noodle shop often has patrons, all big eaters. Women eat 30–50 bowls, men 80–100 bowls; falling short of that number, you wouldn't dare show your face."

"And Moezaki?"

"900 bowls!"
