Chapter 2604: 2511 Taken Out Without a Clear Look

~7 min read 1,248 words

"Don't look, I won't sprinkle cumin on you." Su Yun said.

The patient sighed again.

"You should trust the doctor's advice, eat up." Director Luo urged: "We're in room 912; even if you transferred to another hospital, the care wouldn't be better."

Hearing Director Luo say that, the patient resignedly closed his eyes and swallowed the lubricated sterile glove.

"Boss Zheng, should we use anesthesia?" the anesthesiologist asked.

"No need." Zheng Ren said, "It'll be over soon, the stimulation won't be big."

The patient lay down, eyes fixed on the upper-left screen, feeling full of apprehension.

As the endoscope went in, Zheng Ren performed the procedure while explaining: "Look, this is where the fish bone scratched."

"Here, that's where it got lodged, the injury is fairly serious. But don't worry, drink porridge for two days at home and it will heal quickly."

The patient didn't see the glove; Zheng Ren applied lots of lubricant, and with his large throat, the glove was almost effortlessly swallowed.

The endoscope entered the stomach, where the space is large; Zheng Ren quickly switched the view and used the endoscope's grasping forceps to seize the glove.

"Boss, how can you do such maneuvers without getting dizzy? Your vestibular system shouldn't be able to handle those angles..." Su Yun wondered: "You should be playing competitive games; 99% of people can't do this."

"Don't talk, I'm holding back nausea." Zheng Ren frowned: "Hurry up and finish, or I think I'll vomit on the table."

"It's fine, you'll get used to vomiting."

Director Luo said nothing; he saw Zheng Ren, with the tiny forceps in his hand, grip an edge of the sterile glove, then move the endoscope view, opening the glove. It was as delicate as hand manipulation, posing no difficulty for Boss Zheng.

Next was to put the fish bone into the glove; this step, according to Boss Zheng's method, was the hardest. Director Luo felt he'd have to try several times, relying on luck in trial and error, until success.

He stared fixedly at the screen, unwilling to miss a single frame.

On the screen, as the view moved, the reddish gastric mucosa flashed "swish swish swish" in and out; wanting to precisely locate the fish bone was already hard enough, and at this speed it was practically impossible.

Is Boss Zheng's vestibular system underdeveloped? How dare he operate like that! Director Luo felt somewhat puzzled.

According to normal logic, once inside the stomach all maneuvers should be slow and careful. He was so fast that even someone with a healthy vestibular system felt a bit dizzy...

"Boss, you could really join e‑sports." Su Yun said, "Are you just going by feel? This is the legendary 'hand feel'."

"I just picture a 3D scene in my head and fill in the blanks; I dare not actually look." Zheng Ren said, then began pulling the endoscope back out.

When the endoscope and forceps passed the cardia, the image finally began to "stabilize."

Director Luo saw something faintly inside the glove, obediently gripped by the forceps, being pulled outward.

When did he manage that, and how did the fish bone head obediently "drill" itself into the glove?

With this operation…… Director Luo was speechless.

"Damn! Boss Zheng, awesome!" the anesthesiologist exclaimed, looking at the scene on the screen.

He didn't have to worry about his status like Director Luo; he could say whatever he thought.

The patient also saw the situation, but he couldn't understand it at all, only feeling uncomfortable and wanting to vomit.

Before he could vomit, something suddenly passed through his throat, and he involuntarily gagged twice.

Immediately he saw Zheng Ren, who had been operating all along, grab the sterile glove and say, "Done."

"Boss Zheng, open it so I can look." Director Luo stepped closer.

Su Yun had already moved to the best spot, eyes locked on the sterile glove. The anesthesiologist also came over, and the nurse followed, wanting to see whether the fish bone had really been removed.

The patient lay alone on the operating table, feeling helpless, unsure whether to stay lying down or get up to say thanks.

The procedure seemed finished, but the doctors said nothing, so he dared not get up.

"Here." Zheng Ren set the endoscope view aside, opened the sterile glove, and took out a 5×3 cm fish bone from inside.

Zheng Ren then, with his right hand still gloved, extended his index finger and lightly touched the fish spine on the bone.

"It's very tough, not especially sharp. The patient's lucky; if he hadn't come to the hospital for coughing up blood, we'd probably be seeing him in the major external OR right now." Zheng Ren smiled and said, "Director Luo, who should I give this to?"

He meant to show it to the patient's family; Director Luo, without removing his glove, directly took the fish bone.

"Thanks, Boss Zheng." Director Luo was still somewhat puzzled, recalling how the endoscope had churned up and down in the stomach just moments before.

How Boss Zheng managed to cover the fish bone directly with the sterile glove and then bring it out—he still hasn't figured out the exact procedure.

"No worries, Director Luo." Zheng Ren smiled, "If it's all right, I'll head out first; the surgery back home hasn't been handed over yet."

"Aren't you going to tell the patient's family?" Director Luo asked.

"No, you say it." Zheng Ren removed his sterile glove with two snaps, then immediately tossed it into the red bin for medical waste.

"Don't wolf down your food from now on; it's bad for your body." Zheng Ren said, "Better to fast two days and get intravenous fluids—that's safer."

Director Luo chuckled, nodded, instructed his subordinate doctors to look after the patient, and left with the fish bone and Zheng Ren.

"Boss Zheng, when do you have time for a meal?" Director Luo said, "You've won the Nobel Prize on your side, and I haven't had time to congratulate you—let's eat together as a celebration."

"Director Luo, you're too kind." Zheng Ren said, "I got the award thanks to your tremendous help."

Looking back, when there was nothing else to do, I went department by department paying my respects; the first stop was the gastroenterology department.

Without Director Luo's support, it would have been hard to get things started so early.

Zheng Ren wasn't being polite; he was speaking frankly. Back then conditions were harsh, he and Director Luo didn't even know each other—this counts as a favor of patronage. Though he didn't say it aloud, Zheng Ren kept these things in mind.

Director Luo recalled seeing the bruised and swollen Boss Zheng back then, thinking he must be some family's mischievous brat. Looking back on the past, he felt a mix of regret and emotion.

"Director Luo, about the meal—however, I'll treat." Zheng Ren said seriously, "I need to thank you for your continual help; let's not stand on ceremony. Whenever you have time, let's get together."

After a few more words, Zheng Ren and Su Yun left. Director Luo watched their retreating backs as they went to change clothes, a faint smile appearing at the corner of his mouth.

……

……

Note: The case comes from a surgical video by Director Ji of the Endoscopy Center, First Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University School of Medicine; Teacher Ji is mighty! The surgery was performed exceptionally well. Not empty praise—it really was good, the approach was sound, kudos!!
