Chapter 263: 0257 Starting to Poach from the Assistant (1/5)

~7 min read 1,242 words

"Yun Ge'er, here you are." The General Surgery Department's boss stood up to greet.

"Huh? How did you come out?" Su Yun glanced over; Zhao Yunlong was sitting in the main seat, and beside him was actually Director Li Xiaochen, who had just been talking with Zheng Ren. On the other side, a chair was empty, apparently saved for him.

A few other doctors were also present, all middle-generation staff of the hospital.

"Even the Inpatient Chief has human rights, right? One day off per month." Wang Zong cheerfully took Su Yun's coat, hung it in the closet, not minding that he was acting like an attendant.

Su Yun was utterly unceremonious, plopping down beside Zhao Yunlong.

"Director Li, this is the Su Yun we just mentioned, Yun Ge'er." Old Boss Wang introduced.

"Mr. Su, nice to meet you again." Li Xiaochen stood up, bowed his waist, and extended his hand.

Su Yun didn't even stand; he just casually reached out, lightly touching fingertips, his black hair fluttering above his forehead.

Li Xiaochen seemed unfazed by any slight, a few jokes dispelled Su Yun's coldness; instead of getting straight to the point, they clinked glasses, and the atmosphere at the table heated up.

After a few words of chat, Su Yun figured out the situation.

Old Boss Wang's name is Wang Lu, a simple name. He will graduate with a doctorate next year; his chances of staying at the hospital are slim. Coincidentally, Director Li came to poach people, they hit it off, signed a letter of intent, and after graduation Wang Lu will go to Haicheng Strait Hospital as the responsible attending physician of General Surgery.

Job hunting is a happy occasion, so when Director Li suggested dinner tonight, Wang Lu invited a few acquaintances to keep him company.

At the table, when they talked about recent hospital gossip, Zheng Ren and Su Yun were bound to come up; Director Li, intentionally or not, dropped a few remarks, and Zhao Yunlong called Su Yun over.

Zheng Ren isn't good at socializing, but he's a decent person; nobody speaks ill of him behind his back.

After three rounds of drinks, several bottles of Flying Dragon Maotai were emptied; only then did Director Li stand up, raise his glass, smile at Su Yun, and say, "Mr. Su, I'm older than you, but you're a legendary figure—I'll also call you Yun Ge'er, all right?"

Su Yun knew the show was coming; he nodded and smiled faintly.

"Yun Ge'er, let me first toast you a cup."

Director Li used a half-jin large cup; the clear, icy Maotai inside gave off a rich aroma.

As an overseas returnee, Director Li doesn't like Maotai, preferring wine or whiskey. But following local custom, he basically drinks whatever the target customer wants.

"No need for courtesy." Su Yun still didn't stand; he casually picked up a large cup like Li's, filled it with liquor, lifted it, and without waiting for Li to say more, downed it in one gulp.

"What a capacity for drink!" Li Xiaochen praised, then also downed his cup in one gulp, "Yun Ge'er, let me say something improper."

"If it's improper, don't say it—just eat." Su Yun isn't just sharp-tongued in front of Zheng Ren; that's simply his temperament—call it talent arrogance if you like, but in short… most people dislike his disposition.

Of course, except for the girls.

"Director Li, don't mind him, he's just like that." Zhao Yunlong drank, smoothing things over, "You say yours."

Director Li's smile unchanged, he followed Zhao Yunlong's words and continued, "Yun Ge'er, do you have any thought of leaving Haicheng City First Hospital? Name your price; as long as it's within my authority, if I frown, I'll drink all the wine on this table today."

"Don't waste the effort." Su Yun blew a breath, his black hair fluttering above his forehead, "I just asked Boss Zheng; he said he hasn't decided yet."

"Then you can come first, can't you?" Director Li didn't give up, continuing to persuade.

After leaving Zheng Ren's room, Director Li did a lot of work to understand the Zheng Ren–Su Yun duo.

The more he learned, the more astonished he became.

Zheng Ren's resume is very plain, with no notable highlights before—like he popped out of a stone crack.

But his assistant, Su Yun, has a résumé so dazzling it would blind Director Li's eyes.

Seeing so many "bonus" items, Director Li deeply regretted his impulsiveness; had he deliberated first, he wouldn't have offered Zheng Ren only a post‑tax annual salary of 1.5 million.

Not to mention the practitioner Zheng Ren; even his assistant is that impressive—worth at least a post‑tax 2 million. Giving the practitioner such a paltry sum is no joke.

Moreover, through Wang Lu at the table, they learned of Zheng Ren's surgical skill in General Surgery; these past few days he has even saved a case.

Saying he saved a case is a bit of a stretch—others could do it, but with him it would be done better.

In Director Li's mind, Zheng Ren's value shot up. Moreover, Li mused that since Zheng Ren would be hard to poach, he might as well start with his assistant.

Everything Li Xiaochen said to Su Yun was premeditated.

"Want to poach me?" Su Yun chuckled, quite pleased. As his smile spread, the colors in the hotel private room turned black‑and‑white; the two bewitching female attendants standing behind became mere background, like lifeless puppets.

Director Li froze for a moment—this guy really can live off his looks; if he became a star he'd sweep the scene in no time.

"Director Li, do you know what project I've been working on lately?" Su Yun immediately wiped off his smile and asked.

"I've inquired—it's the differential diagnosis and precise interventional treatment of small liver cancer nodules." Director Li, well‑versed, said, "It should appear in The Lancet in a few months, right?"

Zhao Yunlong's fan‑sized hand slapped Su Yun's back in one swoop: "You've got it—another paper, or The Lancet?"

Su Yun shook his head and said, "That was a few days ago—publishing in The Lancet, just because I'm acquainted with a certain reviewer, so I didn't bother with the hassle."

"……"

"……"

Everyone was stunned.

How, hearing Su Yun's words, does it mean that publishing an article in The Lancet isn't a big deal but rather giving The Lancet face?

This… this guy is just too damn narcissistic.

Su Yun lowered his head slightly, not looking at everyone's expressions, and continued slowly: "Director Li, I believe Haicheng Strait Hospital's recruitment has its own system—for example, publishing a paper in The Lancet magazine adds how many points; being skilled at performing a pancreaticoduodenectomy adds how many points."

"Yun Ge'er is a sensible person." Director Li said.

"I have a paper on prostate interventional embolization therapy; once I'm back in Haicheng I'll send it out."

"Or is it The Lancet?" Zhao Yunlong's eyes turned red, not knowing whether from too much drink or envy.

"The Lancet? What the hell is that." Su Yun sneered, "Last year, the highest‑impact‑factor general medical journal seemed not to be The Lancet, right?"

"It's the New England Journal of Medicine, impact factor 72.4." Director Li knew these figures by heart.

"Director Li, I'm gradually taking a liking to you." Su Yun smiled: "I've already contacted the New England Journal of Medicine; theoretically the paper poses no problem."

"……" Director Li wept.
