2601.2502 Gatekeeper——Lin Ge
"After all, he's a doctor who came from General Surgery and does interventional work; if you connect them, there's an innate advantage." Director Xu said.
Mao Chi was curious, he stood up and said: "I'll go take a look in the operating room."
"Inside there's intermittent radiation leakage, what are you going to look at?" Director Xu said, "Besides, inside there's only equipment; it's better to honestly sit here and watch the operating field."
"Watching the livestream has no soul." Mao Chi said, after finishing, he put on the mask he'd been holding in his hand and walked out.
Without conditions, naturally it's better to do a livestream surgery. But doing surgery in the 912 main operating room, of course it's better to communicate with the surgeon, isn't it?
Upon arriving at the operating room, you don't even need to ask to know which operating suite it is. It's definitely the innermost, most spacious hybrid operating room.
Walking into the control room, Mao Chi saw the radiology technician intently watching the surgery. Through the leaded glass, he could see many people inside.
"How come there are so many people?" Mao Chi asked.
"They're all people who finished surgery but didn't step down; standing outside they still felt they couldn't see well, so they put on lead clothing and went in to watch the surgery." The technician glanced at Mao Chi and said helplessly.
And look, another one has come.
Usually, when mentioning interventional surgery that involves radiation exposure, if possible nobody wants to go in.
But for Boss Zheng's surgery, everyone seems to have forgotten the danger of radiation, all crowding in to watch. Mao Chi sighed; it looks like he arrived late.
He glanced at the screen; there was no radiation leakage for the moment, so he put on a set of lead clothing, opened the airtight lead door, and walked in.
"Director Wei, why are your gastroenterology surgery people coming to join the fun?" Mao Chi, facing him, saw Director Wei standing at the patient's head, having squeezed Lao He to the side.
Mao Chi muttered to himself, the old guy really does know the best spots to watch surgery.
"What, just because you split off from General Surgery you don't need to learn surgery anymore? Thirty years ago, this was all General Surgery's procedure." Director Wei said.
"Watching it is useless; it's not like you guys can do arterial angiography with contrast infusion. It's just giving medication through peripheral veins; if you can't see clearly, you just have to guess." Mao Chi, angry that Director Wei had taken the best spot, could only grab a footstool and stand behind Su Yun to watch.
Behind Boss Zheng, the place was already packed with people, especially those wearing lead clothing to watch the surgery, taking up considerable space; you couldn't squeeze in.
"Director Mao, don't squeeze me." Su Yun said, "Boss's temper is big now; if this surgery isn't done well, he'll give me a three-day cold shoulder later. You can't see anything, so don't squeeze me, let me tell you."
"Xiao Feng." Zheng Ren said in a low voice.
"Chief Zheng." Feng Xu Hui had been standing in the corner of the operating room, wearing lead clothing, holding possibly needed supplies in his hands, waiting unnoticed for Zheng Ren's summons.
"Give Director Lin a call, have him come keep watch; no more people can enter the operating room." Zheng Ren said while dissecting the tumor near the external carotid artery.
"Okay." Feng Xu Hui responded, turned, placed the supplies on a cart, and walked out.
The lead clothing on him was heavy; as he stepped out, his footsteps made a louder thud.
Mao Chi paused, a strange feeling welled up in his heart.
Boss Zheng's temper really has gotten big; although there are… quite a lot of people watching the surgery, it's not to the extent that a single phone call would summon Director Lin to guard the door, right?
But upon reflection, doing that seems not to be wrong.
I guess when Lin Ge gets the call, he'll be happily rushing over. Fortunately I came early; if I'd been later, I might not have been able to get into the operating room.
Mao Chi cautiously moved a few centimeters behind Su Yun, found a good angle, and first surveyed the surroundings.
To his right were the monitor and ventilator; to his left was the interventional angiography screen; further left, at the patient's leg position, was another screen hanging from a robotic arm, its image a vivid green.
This is the screen of an infrared camera, used to observe the distribution of tumor tissue.
And the camera said to be attached to the shadowless lamp is actually not large; its installation position is quite clever, presumably the center of the visual field is where the lamp's light converges, i. e., the area the surgeon's gaze can reach.
The space had become quite cramped; standing to Boss Zheng's left was the professor from Northern Province and the daughter of Director Lin of the Medical University Affiliated Hospital, who was still waiting for Boss Zheng's instructions; if needed, he would press the button on the high-pressure injector to inject contrast agent into the patient's artery.
It's truly treating a steamed bun as dry rations; Mao Chi felt this in his heart.
If the daughter of Director Lin of the Medical University Affiliated Hospital were working under me, it would be impossible for her to be squeezed into a corner of the operating table. Moreover, this kind of surgery where one wears lead clothing onto the operating table wouldn't be assigned to her; it's treating women like livestock.
Boss Zheng, however, is fine; the daughter of Director Lin did get on stage, but she's wearing lead clothing and standing in a corner, with no presence at all. She's become livestock, yet unnoticed.
How many hours will this surgery take? Probably not less than seven or eight, Mao Chi estimated. Although Boss Zheng works fast, orthopedic surgery is basically just that; it's not much better than the orthopedic team-leading professor.
To remove the cervical vertebra and also do a vertebral body replacement, you need time.
Can one endure wearing lead clothing? Mao Chi had doubts.
But he soon stopped thinking about those miscellaneous matters; the surgery continued, and watching Boss Zheng's procedure, Mao Chi felt as if he had entered an art gallery admiring a masterpiece, gradually becoming immersed, unable to extricate himself.
After a dozen or so minutes, Lin Ge walked in.
"Boss Zheng, do you need something from me?" Lin Ge was still fastening his mask's strap. He had rushed over in a hurry, to the point that he hadn't even caught his breath.
"Hmm, trouble Director Lin to help me keep watch; the others who are done with surgery can go back and watch the livestream, the operating room can't hold this many people." Zheng Ren said without looking up.
"Okay."
Saying that, Lin Ge glanced at the many directors inside the operating room.
Whether it was Director Wei or Director Mao, their hearts gave a slight jolt; they quickly lowered their heads and focused on the surgery.
As for Lin Ge, just pretend he doesn't exist.
With thick skin standing here, could Lin Ge actually drag people out by force?
In the midst of speaking, Mao Chi saw Boss Zheng already beginning to block the external carotid artery, preparing to excise and replace it with an artificial vessel.
The surgery was truly clean and efficient—an expanded neck dissection plus external carotid artery replacement—and it was about to be finished.
"Boss Zheng, Director Wei and the others…" Lin Ge, after a few seconds of silence, asked.
"They're in the operating room; in a moment we'll have to change position, and they'll help out a bit." Zheng Ren lifted his head, looking at Director Wei and Director Mao, and said: "In a moment we need to set up the posterior cervical approach position; a few of you, lend a hand."
