Chapter 2755: 2557 Abnormal Electrophysiological Reflex

~7 min read 1,250 words

"Zheng Lao Ban, I've changed my clothes, may I come in and take a look?" an elderly voice said in the hall.

"Master Yan, please come in." Zheng Ren, without raising his head, said softly while performing the surgery.

Master Yan, what a familiar name—Director Qiu felt his hands and feet stiffen as soon as he entered and saw Master Yan.

In Tian Nan, Master Yan is a legend. Today that cold-as-ice folklore master is merely an outer disciple who can't even get past the mountain gate—like a resident doctor in my view, that person holds no status at all in Master Yan's eyes.

Many resident doctors claim to have studied under some master, but those great powers would never remember a particular resident doctor. If one values talent, upon encountering someone truly gifted, they would spare no effort to keep that person close and cultivate them.

Today that feng shui master and folklore expert was previously arrogant, but his expression instantly became humble and submissive after taking the phone call—from a small matter one can see Master Yan's status and identity.

Director Qiu felt his heart tremble, but he must absolutely not make a mistake in front of Master Yan. He kept telling himself, fearing any problem.

This surgery wasn't done in a hospital; instead, he brought himself to the deep mountains and old forests. What this meant, Director Qiu had his own guesses. At the very least it was of great importance and involved some secrecy; he kept muttering to himself that he absolutely could not make a mistake.

"Zheng Lao Ban, Xiao Su, what did you see in the surgery?" Master Yan entered wearing an isolation gown, a sterile cap, and a mask. He was obviously not used to this attire, appearing somewhat ill at ease.

"Master Yan, it's the same as the preoperative diagnosis—the protruding object is a migrating Kocher needle." Su Yun said, tapping the already dislodged Kocher needle with a hemostatic forceps.

Master Yan stood behind Su Yun and saw a steel needle appear amidst the clean, separated flesh and blood; he was instantly stunned.

"Turning the illusory into the real?" No, that's certainly not true qi taking form—it's a migrating Kocher needle.

This mix-up is really rather big; Master Yan felt both amused and exasperated.

But after he steadied his mind and carefully observed the Kocher needle's position, he found the needle tip pressing near the Changqiang point of the Du Meridian.

The earlier diagnosis wasn't wrong either—the Changqiang point of the Du Meridian was indeed compressed, causing impaired flow of the Du Meridian.

"Zheng Lao Ban..."

"Hmm?"

"It's nothing." Master Yan wanted to speak but held back; his great disappointment left him somewhat flustered.

"Master Yan, as your junior I ought to say a few words." Su Yun said while performing the surgery: "As long as one lives, that's enough—what nonsense about daytime ascension? You really intend to bring your chickens and dogs to heaven? Up there might not be better than down here."

"Cut the nonsense, science, science." Zheng Ren's blunt scissors in hand separated the adhered tissues; the dissection was clean, yet that Kocher needle was never touched, remaining completely still.

"Boss, I'm not saying this to Master Yan." Su Yun defended himself: "If I talk science with Yan Zhangsen, he understands; if I talk science with Master Yan..."

"I understand too." Master Yan said with a hint of bitterness.

"You understand, yet you still say it's turning the illusory into the real—you haven't seen how ugly Boss's face got when he mentioned dharma protection and crossing the tribulation." Su Yun laughed and said: "It's fine, just remove the Kocher needle. In previous fixation surgeries, the Kocher needle's tip wasn't always bent into a 90° right angle; now we avoid using it if possible. Even when we do use it, we guard against migration."

"..."

Master Yan remained silent, watching a metal needle gradually become clear in his field of vision; he lamented inwardly, everything was like flowers in a mirror, moon in the water—mere illusion.

The patient lay silently on the "operating table," saying nothing; Zheng Ren didn't know what he was thinking.

After several minutes, the entire Kocher needle had mostly migrated; Zheng Ren softly requested an appendix retractor, gently lifting the needle tip adhered at the sacrococcygeal region to begin the final basal dissection.

At the instant the needle tip was lifted, Zheng Ren faintly felt the patient move a bit.

He paused, puzzled, stopped the surgery and observed the patient's condition. Perhaps the anesthetic concentration was insufficient, the patient had…… impossible! Could it be that I misread?

Zheng Ren looked carefully, but saw no further movement from the patient.

"Senior Brother, the Du Meridian is open!" the patient said in a hoarse voice while lying on the "operating table."

"Has the Changqiang point opened? Zheng Lao Ban just moved the Kocher needle aside." Master Yan said.

"Yes! True qi can flow through the Changqiang point—it's open! Open!!"

Zheng Ren couldn't see the patient's expression, but from his voice he could sense deep inner joy—or perhaps ecstasy.

With continuous epidural anesthesia, the patient remained conscious, which was quite troublesome. Zheng Ren suddenly thought general anesthesia would be better; he doesn't like chatting during surgery, let alone talking with the patient.

Making a gesture, Zheng Ren handed the tail end of the appendix retractor to Su Yun, then began dissecting with the blunt scissors and hemostatic forceps.

But when the blunt scissors were just lowered, they didn't land where they should have. It seemed as if a force in the tiny space pushed the scissors aside. An abnormally proliferating connective tissue kept trembling, causing trouble for the surgery.

"Hmm?" Su Yun noticed something odd and asked in surprise: "Boss, is the lighting poor?"

"No, there's an electrophysiological reaction in a proliferating tissue." Zheng Ren said solemnly.

He didn't continue speaking, but instead felt and resisted that force. Perhaps it's what Su Yun said—poor lighting making his vision blurry. Or maybe he was too tense, causing a slip in the surgery.

Zheng Ren glanced at the energy value on the system panel; it was nearly full, so it shouldn't be a hallucination from his own lack of energy.

Su Yun was surprised; he used the tip of the bipolar electrocautery to locate the position of Zheng Ren's blunt scissors.

Immediately he also felt a force that shouldn't have been there—very weak, yet perceptible.

Before Su Yun could move, Zheng Ren opened his slightly closed eyes, and his blunt scissors and hemostatic forceps began moving again.

It was as if nothing had happened; after a brief pause the surgery returned to the right track. Zheng Ren's hands were steady, each operation flawless. The earlier mishap of misplacing the instruments never recurred.

The disturbance caused by the trembling hyperplastic connective tissue due to the abnormal point physiological reflex was quickly overcome; he focused on dissecting the Kocher needle, moving upward from the coccygeal region.

Su Yun silently watched his own boss's operation, abandoning his previous habit of chattering while "driving" in the operating room; he fell silent and wholeheartedly cooperated with Zheng Ren's movements.

After removing the Kocher needle and suturing layer by layer, the gauze in Zheng Ren's hand wasn't soaked through; the specks of blood seemed to show just how perfect this surgery was!

After continuous suturing, the final stitch emerged; Zheng Ren, holding the blunt scissors in his palm, cut the thread, and the surgery was declared complete.
