Chapter 2863: 2768.2661 Poisoned? (Alliance Leader Anxi Huixiang extra chapter 5)
2768.2661 Poisoned? (Alliance Leader Anxi Huixiang extra chapter 5)
The new inpatient chief of the gastroenterology surgery department surnamed Dong is an outsider. After falling ill, he didn't go home but stayed in his duty room with an IV drip.
After Lao He figured it out, he told Zheng Lao Ban the situation.
Zheng Ren hardly had any impression of this new inpatient chief; the inpatient chiefs are as steady as iron and as numerous as the 912 assembly line. People as unfortunate as Zhou Litao are rare, and if he really became such an ironclad inpatient chief, Zhou Litao would probably cry to death.
Even if he didn't cry himself to death, he'd eventually be worked to death.
Not having gone to see Feng Jianguo, Zheng Ren felt something was fishy. From Quan Xiaocao's words, Zheng Ren sensed that it should be Director Dong's illness, and then Feng Jianguo fell ill as well.
If it weren't for the system panel, Zheng Ren would surely suspect a new, contagious disease.
But it's just an atrioventricular conduction block, which really doesn't indicate any problem. The key is that this thing isn't transmitted between people, and heart disease isn't contagious.
Arriving at the gastroenterology surgery department, Zheng Ren hurried to the inpatient chief's duty room. He knocked, entered, and saw an IV stand and a bottle half-filled with liquid.
A man around thirty sat half-upright in bed, earnestly reading a thick tool book.
"Director Dong, you're sick but still reading?" Zheng Ren greeted with a smile.
"Uh… Zheng… Zheng Lao Ban? How did you come?" Director Dong almost jumped up from the bed, obviously excited, nearly pulling the needle from the back of his hand.
"Lie down, lie down, don't move." Zheng Ren quickly said, "No need to be so polite."
"Zheng Lao Ban…" Director Dong looked rather restrained, he sat up excitedly, wanting to do something. After all, Zheng Lao Ban had come to see him, yet he himself remained lying in bed, which really wasn't proper.
At the very least, doing so is too impolite.
Zheng Ren glanced and saw that the book he was holding was not *Huang Jiawei's Surgery* nor *Gastroenterology Surgery*, but a text on *Internal Medicine Diagnosis*.
"How come Director Dong is reading an internal medicine book?" Zheng Ren smiled, sat down aside, and chatted casually to keep the atmosphere from becoming too awkward.
"I can't move; any activity makes me uncomfortable." Director Dong sighed, "It's really boring, so I'm looking at a diagnosis book."
"You say any activity makes you uncomfortable—what do you mean by that?" Zheng Ren, seeing Director Dong hit the point, dropped the pretense and asked directly.
"Lately I've had some diarrhea, possibly from dehydration due to loose stools. When I get up and move, I feel uncomfortable all over and dizzy. Twice I've seen a red haze before my eyes, which startled me." Director Dong scratched his head, a bit embarrassed, and said, "I fell ill right after becoming inpatient chief—it's definitely not on purpose."
"It's fine; everyone gets sick." Zheng Ren said gently, "Director Dong, what discomfort have you been having lately?"
"Nausea, vomiting, dizziness—once I get sick I sweat profusely, just like after a steam sauna." Director Dong said sheepishly, "I don't usually feel weak, but after just a few shifts I'm like this……
He seemed to hold a grudge about falling ill right after becoming inpatient chief, constantly emphasizing that it wasn't intentional.
"Just before Feng brother went into surgery, he also said he felt unwell, and an ECG showed third-degree atrioventricular block." Zheng Ren looked at Director Dong and asked, "Have you had an ECG?"
"No." Director Dong replied.
"Let's check it out; what you described sounds somewhat similar to Feng brother's situation." Zheng Ren said, "Once it's done, you can relax—no need to keep worrying."
"Uh… Zheng Lao Ban, is that really necessary?" Director Dong chuckled, "I'm so young and have no heart disease history; the chance of a problem is small."
Zheng Ren shook his head slightly, "Not necessarily."
Seeing Zheng Lao Ban insist, Director Dong didn't argue, called the ward nurse to bring the bedside ECG machine over and had an ECG done.
Zheng Ren took the paper spit out by the machine and examined it bit by bit.
Second-degree atrioventricular block—just like Feng Jianguo's! Zheng Ren's eyes narrowed, the abnormal signal on the ECG echoing in his mind.
The QRS complexes looked a bit off, showing the same narrowing.
What's going on?
"Lao He." Zheng Ren mused aloud.
"Zheng Lao Ban." Lao He immediately appeared before Zheng Ren's eyes.
"Please check how Feng brother's side is doing." Zheng Ren said.
Lao He pulled out his phone and dialed, quickly saying, "Zheng Lao Ban, Yun Ge'er says Old Feng still has an atrioventricular block issue, but it should probably become first-degree in about an hour."
Looking at Director Dong's ECG and listening to Lao He's report about Su Yun's situation, Zheng Ren suddenly recalled something.
"Do you feel uncomfortable now, Director Dong?" Zheng Ren asked.
"I'm fine; just a bit dizzy when I stand up, otherwise nothing's wrong." Director Dong replied.
"Please give Director Dong a shot of atropine." Zheng Ren told the nurse.
The nurse stared for a moment, and Director Dong, also puzzled by what was happening, gazed blankly at Zheng Lao Ban.
"I suspect you've been poisoned." Zheng Ren said, "The test is a bit troublesome, so let's start with diagnostic therapy."
"It's just one shot of atropine, and it won't endanger his life—no reason to offend Zheng Lao Ban over this." Director Dong nodded and smiled, "Zheng Lao Ban, what do you suspect the problem is?"
"Has anyone else in the department shown these symptoms lately?" Zheng Ren asked.
"No." Director Dong shook his head, also finding it strange, "I fell ill first, and I didn't even know Professor Feng was feeling unwell. Others……
He had initially answered offhand, possibly feeling not serious enough, then after thinking a bit more he firmly said, "Everyone else is fine, Zheng Lao Ban."
So it's not a group issue, and environmental factors are ruled out.
For Zheng Ren, the answer had become fairly clear.
"Director Dong, have you and Professor Feng eaten the same food? The only thing you two have eaten." Zheng Ren immediately followed up.
Upon hearing Zheng Ren say that, Director Dong's expression turned odd; he scratched his head and didn't respond.
Zheng Ren didn't press further, waiting to speak after the atropine injection was given.
While the nurse went to fetch medicine, Zheng Ren sent a video call request to Su Yun.
"Huh? Strange, why would this block of wood ask for a video call?" Su Yun bluntly asked after accepting the video call.
"How's Feng brother's side?" Zheng Ren asked.
"Director Zhang has looked it over and said there's nothing wrong. However, Director Zhang also finds it odd that such a quickly reversible atrioventricular block is uncommon, and is currently seeking the answer."
Before Zheng Ren could finish speaking, Su Yun added, "You're in gastroenterology surgery? You went to see Director Dong? Boss, do you have an idea now!"
"Mm, just thought of it. I'll give Director Dong a shot of atropine on my end and then see how things go."
"Uh… what do you suspect?"
"Wood lily poisoning."
