Chapter 3032: 2832 When the Time Comes, Heaven and Earth Work Together
Lao He was preparing the equipment and medicines needed for the surgery in the interventional surgery room; he had received a notice from Su Yun last night that today they would perform a thoracoscopic surgery.
At the time he didn't think much of it; thoracoscopic surgery is just a very basic procedure, and it's not 20 years ago anymore—basically, doctors of inpatient chief level in the 912 ER have already used the thoracoscope to death.
For the anesthesiologist, single-lung ventilation is a prerequisite skill to ensure smooth thoracoscopic operation. Unlike laparoscopy, where the abdomen is insufflated to create space, thoracoscopy requires the lung tissue to collapse so that a view can be obtained.
Lao He didn't think there would be any problem; after all, whether it was his own surgical skill or Zheng Lao Ban backing him up, the chance of something going wrong was almost zero, so he didn't consider it for now.
After handing over shift, Lao He went to the interventional surgery room.
"Xiao Hua, there's no emergency case, right?" Lao He asked.
"The director said to keep an emergency operating room for Interventional Zheng Lao Ban, saying they want to do a thoracoscopy," the on-duty anesthesiologist said.
It turned out they had already said hello; Lao He came smiling to an emergency interventional operating room and first plugged in the USB drive.
With Good Luck Come playing as BGM, Lao He felt twenty years younger, his steps a bit lighter. Monitor…… ventilator…… double-lumen intubation…… emergency drugs……
Lao He carefully checked each item; although the 912 ER surgery had its own established process, he still did a final double-check, uneasy. Moreover, this is the interventional surgery room, where general anesthesia is relatively rare, so Lao He had to make sure everything was flawless.
If they started the case and were missing something, that would be fucked up.
"He Jun Jin!" a voice he wasn't familiar with but that made Lao He's scalp tingle came over. Lao He blinked, his relaxed, pleased expression froze, then he switched to another face, turning his head with a smile like a blooming chrysanthemum.
"Director Ye, how come you're here?"
"Director Xu went down to see the patient; I'm just taking a look. Are you checking the equipment?" Ye Qingqiu asked.
"Yeah, I'll take a look first; the surgery slip hasn't been issued yet. Once I get the surgery notice, I'll go see the patient." Lao He said, and suddenly realized that the patient for today's surgery must be a big shot.
Otherwise Ye Qingqiu wouldn't have come up, and Director Xu wouldn't have gone down.
"Everything ready? Nothing missing?" Ye Qingqiu asked.
"Yeah, all done; the patient can be anesthetized as soon as they come up."
Ye Qingqiu nodded slightly, glanced over the operating room, then asked, "Is this the Good Luck Come that Zheng Lao Ban listens to when he does surgery?"
"Yes, Director Ye." Lao He, not understanding why, answered cautiously, not daring to add a word.
When facing the head of the Medical Department, all clinical doctors will give a certain respect, as long as they still have some sense in their hearts.
Ye Qingqiu neither affirmed nor denied, just gave a slight nod; seeing Xie Yiren walk in carrying the surgical instruments, the creases at the corners of her eyes deepened a bit—she must have been smiling.
But the two didn't exchange words, and Ye Qingqiu turned and left.
"Yi Ren, who are we operating on today?" Lao He asked after letting out a breath.
"I heard early this morning it's an 84‑year‑old elderly patient who had already prepared to give up and go home, but yesterday Zheng Ren saw him and arranged for him to come to our hospital's emergency surgery."
Xie Yiren handed the disinfected instrument box to the circulating nurse, who was going to disinfect it, and told Lao He some information.
It wasn't a major open‑chest surgery, so Dr. Charles's instrument box wouldn't be of much use, but Xie Yiren still carefully prepared the surgery set, lest they need it and be scrambling.
Lao He began to think, 84 years old—likely an elderly patient, with various possibilities of intubation failure.
He took out the fiber bronchoscope and placed it somewhere out of the way. A second‑generation Explorer laryngeal mask…… well, forget that; even if they needed to use Zheng Lao Ban's side, they have a third‑generation one.
What other equipment might be needed but isn't used often?
As he was pondering, Lao He heard another familiar voice coming from the hallway.
"Peng Lao, we've prepared a resting room for you—would you like to lie down for a bit?"
It was Director Yan! Lao He's heart gave a little jolt. It seems the patient's background is bigger than he imagined—even Director Yan has come along.
"No, wouldn't my being a family member watching the surgery put pressure on the surgeon?" Peng Lao said, not showing any tension, with a cheerful laugh.
"That's not it; Zheng Lao Ban's surgery is very steady, he has a big heart." Director Yan laughed, "I'm not worried about that—I'm just afraid you'll tire yourself out, old sir."
"It's only an hour total, nothing tiring."
Lao He pretended to be busy, putting on a wordless performance of his diligence, care, steadiness, and conscientiousness.
Work needs to be done, and even the false show must be done well—Lao He knows this inside out. If his luck hadn't been bad in the first half of his life, he would have risen long ago. As the saying goes, "When the time comes, heaven and earth work together"; now his luck should be turning, Lao He thought with a grin.
"Oh? Doctor Zheng usually listens to … when he does surgery…"
Stepping outside the operating room, Peng Lao heard the song Good Luck Come drifting from inside and remarked offhand. But how to describe it? Back when Peng Lao and his peers did surgery, they didn't have such good conditions, but that doesn't stop him from knowing that today's surgeons each have their own preferred music.
In the operating room they've heard countless songs, but never Good Luck Come.
Frankly, this song is a bit noisy, the rhythm a little fast—if it were for square dancing… it seems even square dancers would reject this tune. Peng Lao smiled slightly and said, "Such an old‑fashioned song is really rare."
"Zheng Lao Ban might be doing it for a good omen," Ye Qingqiu said softly from the side.
Peng Lao nodded.
"This is Deputy Chief of Anesthesiology Dr. He Jun Jin," Ye Qingqiu introduced.
Although Lao He had never been this close to Peng Lao before, he had always heard his name. Plus, when Ye Qingqiu introduced himself he directly said "deputy chief," Lao He felt a glad surge—this must be legit, otherwise Director Ye wouldn't stare straight and tell a lie just to make Peng Lao feel that the 912 ER values him.
So it's the surgery of this old gentleman's lover—no wonder.
Lao He turned, greeted Peng Lao, but at the door of the operating room a dark crowd pressed in—like they were about to hold a hospital director's meeting, with all the hospital‑level leaders trailing behind.
"Peng Lao." Lao He didn't dodge the friendly greeting or fawn; he simply gave a plain hello, gave a slight bow, and then resumed his wordless performance.
Seeking no merit, only to avoid fault— the credit all belongs to Zheng Lao Ban, and Lao He thinks it's already pretty good to be able to tag along and get a share.
"Peng Lao, take a rest." Director Yan brought over a small round stool, placed it in the corner of the operating room, and firmly pressed Peng Lao onto it.
"Don't have too many people in the operating room; Director Yuan can stay, the rest should withdraw." Director Yan glanced at the people behind him, then lowered his voice and started shooing them out.
