Chapter 3070: with translation of chapter title

~7 min read 1,212 words

2868 Operating room……haunted?

Just as I was about to chat with Zheng Lao Ban for a bit, to cultivate some feeling, Sun Chao's phone started ringing wildly.

Actually, the phone ringtone has always been the same; it's just that Sun Chao received a lot of information today, so he was fully focused on 'digesting' various information, and the ringtone startled him, making him feel the ringtone was 'crazy'.

He picked up the phone, hadn't even expressed dissatisfaction, when a hoarse, strained shout came from the other end: 'Director, something happened in the operating room!'

The voice was urgent and loud, even openly… fearful.

'What's going on?!' Sun Chao asked blankly, recalling today's surgeries in his department.

Vascular Surgery is a hybrid department, doing both external surgeries and interventional procedures. Today Sun Chao himself was doing an interventional surgery, and over in the Big External Operating Room there were two cases of arterial malformation, performed by a very reliable professor.

But those two surgeries are done; the remaining are minor issues like great saphenous vein varicose. Because the patients' conditions are mild, they were scheduled for the afternoon.

'What could possibly go wrong with great saphenous vein varicose?' Sun Chao, after sorting it out in a flash, felt even more bewildered. What's happening?

'Director, it's haunted, it's haunted!' the nurse on the other end wasn't pretending; her fearful voice poured straight out of the speaker.

Zheng Ren sighed, 'Damn it, what the hell is a haunted operating room?'

In broad daylight, under a clear sky, how did we end up with this superstitious nonsense?

Sun Chao felt a bit embarrassed; he glanced sheepishly at Zheng Ren, then sternly said, 'Today isn't April Fools' Day!'

'Director, Director…' the nurse on the other end said with a choked voice, 'Come take a look, I've called security.'

After saying that, she hung up, never clarifying the matter; now we just know the operating room is haunted.

'Director Sun, you're quite something,' Su Yun laughed heartily, not really believing the operating room could be haunted.

What era is this? Science is advanced; although there are countless unsolved problems, the words 'operating room' and 'haunted' really don't go together.

Sun Chao was extremely embarrassed; he frowned and stood up, his anger bottled up. After a few seconds' pause, he sighed, 'Director Mao, could you entertain Zheng Lao Ban for me? I'll go take a look.'

'Let's go together; I'd like to see what's going on with this haunting. Speaking of which, the sun hasn't even set yet—how could ghosts appear?' Su Yun said with a grin, not taking it seriously at all.

……

……

Ten minutes ago, at the Medical University Affiliated Hospital, Professor Ning of the Orthopedics Department had completed six spinal surgeries; his work for the day was finally done, and after checking the rooms he could go home.

This is undoubtedly the most joyful thing: returning home, changing into pajamas, sitting on the sofa to watch American dramas, completely relaxing—Professor Ning enjoys this.

He had the interns send the patients down, Professor Ning humming a little tune from his hometown, leisurely preparing to leave the operating room.

Strange, why haven't the nurses cleaned the operating room yet? As he was about to leave, Professor Ning gave the Shujian a puzzled glance, feeling odd.

Normally, after surgery and once the patients are sent down, nurses would come to clean the Shujian and start disinfecting. It's work; leaving it undone won't make it disappear, only delay his own quitting time.

Never mind! Professor Ning, feeling light-hearted, turned and left the Shujian.

Today's surgeries went quite smoothly, although with three surgery days a week there's overtime work. The remaining two days are for outpatient clinics to see patients, and on weekends he still has to go to Flying Knife, his schedule packed, yet Professor Ning still finds joy in every minute and second.

People, after all, earn money just to be happy.

Leaving the Shujian, Professor Ning thought about his weekend Flying Knife plans; thinking about earning money, although it's a bit hard, he has no complaints, just a little happiness.

The hallway of the operating room was somewhat quiet; it was now 3:30 p. m., have today's surgeries really been that fast? Normally, for a hospital of the Medical University Affiliated Hospital's level, outpatient surgeries would continue until after work.

Just as he stepped out of the Shujian, Professor Ning heard a piercing scream, full of terror.

Um… hearing a scream anywhere isn't surprising. But this is the operating room—what kind of gruesome, bloody scenes aren't there already?

Professor Ning frowned, focusing his gaze; a nurse stumbled backward out of the Shujian, seeming to have lost her soul, her steps unsteady, and she almost tripped over herself, nearly falling to the ground.

Before Professor Ning could go help her up, the nurse scrambled to her feet and ran away as if fleeing.

Looking at her panicked back, she ran while clutching her phone, trying to call; probably her hands were shaking too badly to dial.

What's going on? What happened?

Soon after, Professor Ning heard a hysterical shout from inside the Shujian, roughly meaning something like a doctor hitting someone—utterly unthinkable.

Professor Ning's heart jolted—hitting someone? In the operating table? This is bloody nonsense. Are we doing stand‑up comedy now, letting a patient do whatever they want after anesthesia?!

Having worked for decades, I've basically never seen a fight in the operating room.

Except for drunks, but even when encountering drunks no one would beat them up; if word got out that a patient was beaten in the operating room, even the director might be dragged into the scandal.

Besides, no matter the grudge, you can't kill someone… what am I thinking? Professor Ning shook off the chaotic thoughts and walked over to see what had happened.

'Damn it, just beat me to death!' a voice shouted, and then chaotic, crashing sounds erupted in the operating room.

They really started fighting! Professor Ning's heart tightened. He doesn't fight and rarely sees fights; hearing the sound of breaking glass mixed with roars made him tense up involuntarily.

His blood pressure spiked instantly, a rush of blood almost shooting out of his forehead.

Several miserable cries rang out, then doctors and nurses rushed out, one person's head had been split open, blood flowing.

What the hell is going on! Professor Ning pressed himself against the wall, not knowing what had happened.

Even back when the underworld still existed, people came to the hospital polite and respectful. Those gang big brothers even had a 'belief' that they shouldn't beat doctors, otherwise they'd die on the street with no one to care.

But rites have collapsed and music has crumbled… though that was just a few years ago; now the crackdown on organized crime is winding down, and there's hardly any underworld left.

His mind racing with chaotic thoughts, Professor Ning witnessed a scene he would never forget.

A burly man waved an IV pole, roaring as he crawled out of the Operating Room. He glanced toward Professor Ning, and the moment their eyes met, Professor Ning was terrified out of his wits.

The burly man's face was smeared with blood, his eyes blood‑red, and red tears streamed down his cheeks—utterly bizarre.
