Chapter 3180: then translation of title

~9 min read 1,701 words

Zheng Lao Ban

From October 26, 2018 to March 28, 2020, spanning 520 days, the Surgery Livestream Room was finished.

At the moment I finished the book, the time I spent at my desk was the same as with Zheng Lao Ban and Xiao Shitou—afternoon, the sunshine was splendid.

At this moment, there was no excitement, but rather calm.

In 520 days, I updated 628.73 ten-thousand characters, something I could never have imagined before starting the book. Apart from ranking first in monthly tickets, I basically achieved all attainable achievements; looking back, it feels like a dream.

I chose this day; I deeply love this book, and I deeply love you who like the livestream room. Having chosen this day, ending is also extremely good.

Habitually, I start to nag, talking about my regrets.

During the New Year period, I wrote a single chapter briefly describing my distress and helplessness. Originally, in the final stage, I secretly kept a major plot twist, intending to give readers a surprise, but the sudden outbreak of the epidemic interrupted the outline.

Yes, the original outline was to write about resisting H8N10, then create a contradictory conflict at the Nobel Prize award ceremony. I have never been interested in the Nobel Prize or Sweden, and readers have teased me about this for a long time.

Under WHO's invitation, Zheng Lao Ban, as an overseas expert providing support, turned the tide, achieving a glorious moment; under the N-shaped lights, he spoke everything out, with even greater force.

This was expected; the outline and plot were already ready—who knew COVID-19 would erupt like this?

Not writing about the present is my principle; writing a contemporary urban novel now is extremely difficult, I hope everyone can understand.

However, the gloom of that period and the hardship of working in hazmat suits have been shattered by countless recent events; while watching the spectacle in stunned silence, I have sighed countless times—great Chinese people, truly invincible!

When designing the plot originally, it was adapted from World of Warcraft's Corrupted Blood incident.

Briefly, in World of Warcraft version 1.7, the final boss of the Zul'Gurub instance is Hakkar the Soulflayer. During combat, Hakkar releases a negative spell called Corrupted Blood; affected players not only receive a damage-over-time debuff, but also spread it to teammates within 5 yards.

Simply put, the player is poisoned. Moreover, this poison spreads; players near him also get infected.

During the extensive advertising for WoW Classic, I could think of many things; most prominent was the Corrupted Blood incident, and also I used a colleague's Night Elf Rogue to mine in the depths, endlessly resetting instances, becoming the richest on the server. (Five instances per hour, modified because of mining black iron.)

This Corrupted Blood skill is dubbed the biggest bug in gaming history.

As a contagious debuff, the player character is not the sole host of Corrupted Blood—players' pets can also be infected.

When a hunter dismisses his pet, it's equivalent to pausing time; the pet does not die, but the effect does not disappear.

Briefly, I believe smart readers know what my original plot was.

Whether it's the medieval Black Death or the nineteenth-century cholera and smallpox, their cross-regional spread is due to long-distance travel by virus carriers. In the game, a single Hearthstone, one action by a hunter, will spread Corrupted Blood.

There are videos online; you can look them up.

For top-tier players with 3000-4000 health at that time, this negative effect was not fatal, but for players not yet at max level, it was practically disastrous.

Thus, in the major cities of both Alliance and Horde, corpses lay scattered everywhere, bones everywhere; Blizzard stepped in to shut down the major cities, preventing gatherings. But… after all, it's a game, so some players deliberately infected the main cities' NPCs, using warlock summoning rituals to spread infection elsewhere.

This process made the bug uncontrollable; it was directly patched before the Chinese server opened Zul'Gurub.

However, this incident left a legacy; an Israeli World of Warcraft player, Lovfgren, with his professor's help, turned his personal experience of this 'plague' into a paper, which was finally published in the top medical journal Willow Leaf Blade·Infectious Diseases.

Being able to write a paper from a game and publish it in a top journal, I am also convinced.

Lovfgren later became an expert in epidemiology, currently employed at Washington State University.

Ahem, I have briefly recounted the events; you should understand why I deleted this plot back then.

When I started drafting the outline, it was still before January 23, but the help requests on Weibo kept increasing; as soon as I put pen to paper, I felt uncomfortable all over.

Only on January 23, this unforgettable day, did I decide to reject this plot; I couldn't write it, it was too damn heartbreaking.

The hasty, panicked, slightly chaotic last-minute changes resulted in no particular highlight; I still need to apologize for this.

Getting back to the point, theoretically the Corrupted Blood incident cannot be stopped. Only when Blizzard's top developers stepped in and fixed the bug did the matter finally come to an end.

This is also why I felt discouraged at the time; I thought my research was profound, so I believed no country could successfully resist it. I was extremely pessimistic, my mood sank to the lowest point. In the end, the result was not much different from the medieval Black Death.

World of Warcraft Classic (optional)

Over 42000 public hospital medical staff and military medical personnel rushed to the frontline (Liu Xu zhi led a team to Wuhan Xiehe Hospital for support on the third day of the lunar new year, and has not yet returned).

Cities everywhere were locked down; everyone just experienced it firsthand, so no need to say more.

We experienced a catastrophe; although not yet over, the first step's victory is epic, a legend!

In the 2011 film Infectious Disease, the virus's R0 is 2; they wouldn't dare film a disease with an R0 of 3.77 or higher. Because it's too terrifying, humanity has no recourse…

But such a terrifying event, the most vicious, most lethal super-high infection, super-long latency, sudden outbreak, quickly lethal virus in the Plague Inc. company was simply choked to death.

Although there are still imported cases everywhere, we must still be cautious, but just speaking of these two months' performance, it can be called great!

Um, awesome!

When finishing the book, I even felt a little relieved. Earlier, no matter how wildly I imagined, even if Zheng Lao Ban cheated, I never dared think the virus would be solved by a nationwide pause, with some fighting on the front lines, some going to the grassroots, some enduring at home, just like that, head-on.

Countless medical workers, countless street workers, countless…… countless of the countless, including every honest, quiet person enduring at home are great. To speak without exaggeration, it is truly great.

Moreover, we gave up immeasurable wealth just for lives; this point deserves countless praises, especially under the exaltation of a higher-level humanitarianism…

To be honest, when I first saw regions successively lifting seals and more and more cities' confirmed cases dropping to zero, I just thought it unbelievable, ending just like that? Was the Willow Leaf Blade I read earlier fake?

Is the mathematical model fake?

Is there a problem with the R0?

But seeing herd immunity emerge, everything became clear.

No, these are all true; it's just that our nation, our people, are truly truly—invincible in battle!!!

I feel a little relieved; an epic victory wasn't written hastily. As a writer, this victory is beyond imagination, beyond ordinary, it is… great!

Next book, after things settle, I will depict a tiny locality.

I dare not write the whole picture; Teacher Nanshan stood with a ticket and rushed to the front line, confirming the nature; Teacher Li Lanjuan suggested lockdown, and even now I cannot imagine the pressure they bore then.

How great the pressure exactly, looking around, one can see a spot through a tube—i. e., get a glimpse.

This is an epic victory; while others waited for Noah's Ark, lay flat for total immunity, and shamelessly clamored to abandon the elderly, we held on with our unyielding iron bones.

Awesome!

Mighty!

Overbearing!

Great!

Chinese people!!

Invincible in battle!!!

Really, each of you is great and irreplaceable.

The plot's regrets and expectations have been addressed. Speaking of which, the Surgery Livestream Room has ended. Originally, the final plan was that, no matter how things went earlier, in the end Xiao Shitou would have his surgery completed, and then in the good afternoon sunshine he would bump fists with Zheng Ren.

Whether Xiao Shitou recovers or not doesn't matter; he is a symbol representing the patient. Medicine gathering dust on the rack is always a wish.

Hope that the doctor-patient relationship can forever be this Harmony and amicable; doctors and patients are Comrade-in-Arms, the enemy is always disease—this is the book's theme, and also what I truly want to express.

Indeed, there are such or such disappointments in reality, but what of it? This is life~(dog head).

The story's ending is not abrupt; Zheng Lao Ban, Yi Ren, and Yun Ge'er will continue living in another time and space, their future in their own hands—healing the sick and saving people, marrying and having children, each day plain as water yet extraordinarily fulfilling.

What changes is time and life; what does not change is the Persistence and faith in healing the sick and saving people.
