Chapter 400: 392 Trap-style Fraud
Fan Tian Shui's aura shifted instantly; he didn't ask why, his eyes narrowed, and he followed Zheng Ren into the Emergency Department Building.
Zheng Ren walked slowly, unsure what the man holding a child was after.
Was he here to get a death certificate from the hospital, or to do something else?
Because of Xiao Liu's incident, hospital disturbances had vanished from City First Hospital, and Zheng Ren hadn't considered that.
But one should always be careful; that was Zheng Ren's code of conduct.
About twenty meters behind, roughly separated by a corridor turn, Zheng Ren followed the man at an even pace to the Emergency Department.
The man's silhouette finally entered the Pediatric Emergency.
Zheng Ren stood at the door, listening intently.
"Doctor, my child has a fever; please prescribe some fever medicine," the man said in the Emergency Internal Medicine.
Since it was early morning, the Emergency Department was at its quietest, with few people.
Anyone seeing a doctor, if it wasn't especially urgent, wouldn't compete with those bringing children for treatment.
Pediatric doctors are now as rare as gold nuggets, with shortages nationwide.
City First Hospital had also scraped together all it could, managing to transfer two pediatric doctors to the Emergency Department; they only handled daytime shifts, while night emergencies went straight to the Inpatient Department.
If pediatric doctors dwindled further, even the pediatric inpatient wards would likely have to close.
Zheng Ren's mind filled with doubts; he stood quietly in the hallway, carefully listening to the conversation in the examination room.
"Let me examine the child," the doctor said.
"Doctor, the child is drenched in sweat; don't look, or else if he catches a worse cold, what then?" The man's words had lost their earlier politeness, turning harsh.
"How can you just take medicine without an examination?" the pediatrician insisted, though her tone carried some fear.
In pediatrics, those who shout at and abuse doctors and nurses are all too common—could it be that I've run into one today?
"All you know is to check and charge! I just want to get some medicine for my child!" he shouted, "If you don't do an exam, you won't see a patient?!"
Zheng Ren's brows were knotted like two iron chains.
This man was clearly no ordinary person; he unconsciously shifted concepts, turning a physical examination into a demand for tests.
Although to the doctor these were two utterly different approaches to treatment, the patient wouldn't understand.
He bellowed loudly, hoping to draw a crowd so as to pressure the pediatrician.
Holding a dead child, he pressured the pediatrician…
Zheng Ren's heart sank into an endless abyss.
"Zheng Ren, what do you want?" Director Pan stepped out of his office, saw Zheng Ren standing at the pediatric examination room door, and asked.
"Director Pan, someone's causing trouble, and it's quite serious," Zheng Ren said.
Su Yun pursed his lips, but because Director Pan was present, he refrained from habitually sniping at Zheng Ren twice.
"Hmm?" Director Pan also heard the arguing and conversation from inside the pediatric examination room and strode in.
"What's the matter? Why all this shouting first thing in the morning?" Director Planting his stance like a towering mountain.
The man was coercing the pediatrician to prescribe medicine when he suddenly saw Director Pan enter; behind him he could also see Fan Tian Shui's vigorous figure, and his momentum instantly deflated.
"I just want some medicine; if you won't give it, fine—I'll go to the pharmacy." The man held the child, turned to leave, muttering, "Healing and saving people—everything's just about gouging money."
Director Pan's face turned cold, but he said nothing.
Just as the man was about to step out of the examination room, Zheng Ren blocked his way.
"You came to see a doctor and just leave like that?" Zheng Ren said, "No need to spend money—I'll examine your child."
The man panicked instantly.
"You black‑hearted doctors!" he shouted hoarsely, wanting other patients in the hallway to hear.
"Don't want to spend money, can't understand human speech?" Zheng Ren's voice also rose, refusing to yield an inch.
Director Pan and Su Yun were somewhat surprised; this… seemed not like Zheng Ren's style, as if his persona had collapsed in an instant.
The man wore a menacing glare, staring ferociously at Zheng Ren, his one hand clenched into a fist.
Fan Tian Shui stepped forward half a pace, standing behind Zheng Ren's flank, his whole body emanating a sharp aura.
That was the killing intent of someone who had taken a life; no matter how tough the man was—just a thuggish ruffian—he could not possibly oppose Fan Tian Shui.
Even merely sensing Fan Tian Shui's aura, the man's arrogant blaze was instantly snuffed out.
"I'm not seeing a doctor anymore—can't I just go?" the man muttered, under Fan Tian Shui's oppressive presence, unable even to get out a polite line.
"No way!" Zheng Ren shifted sideways, blocking the man, and said sternly, "You said it yourself—the hospital is for healing and saving lives. I must take responsibility; let me examine your child."
All of this exceeded the man's expectations.
Not only him, but even Director Pan and Su Yun were utterly baffled.
Was Zheng Ren basically asking for a lightning strike?
The man felt a hint of despair—where did this idiot come from? If he wanted to leave, why would Zheng Ren stop him?
Having visited countless hospitals, this was the first unexpected situation he'd encountered.
Making up his mind, he hurled the swaddling bundle in his arms at Zheng Ren, then slipped away through a gap.
Zheng Ren grabbed the swaddling cloth in one hand and bellowed, "Fan Tian Shui, stop him!"
Fan Tian Shui's mind held only orders; in his consciousness, Zheng Ren was his lifesaver and also his squad leader, the old squad leader.
Just like carrying out a mission, he never questioned what the task was—whatever the old squad leader said to do, he did.
Fan Tian Shui bumped with his shoulder; the man staggered and fell to the ground.
Zheng Ren didn't bother with what had happened behind him; he opened the swaddling cloth, and a tender, pallid face came into view.
Director Pan asked, "Dead?"
Su Yun poked the child's cheek with a finger, feeling its firmness and temperature, and said, "Dead for at least twelve hours."
Several people instantly flew into a rage!
What the Hospital fears most nowadays is trap-style extortion.
For example, the child is already dying, they go to another Hospital for treatment, and after the child dies they immediately cause trouble.
For example, a physical examination discovers a malignant tumor, the family waits downstairs, the patient jumps from the upper floor, the whole process is recorded, and then they extort money.
The Hospital is like a bank; they come to withdraw money at will, completely disregarding how much psychological trauma the attending doctors will suffer, and not caring how many doctors will quit practicing medicine because of this.
As for this matter right before our eyes, it is obvious that the man came to get medicine, deliberately showing his face in front of the camera.
If the pediatrician does not Persistence, or if Zheng Ren does not happen to discover it, a few hours later he will again come causing trouble with the dead child in his arms, claiming that the child died from taking the medicine prescribed by the Hospital.
Whether it's Director Pan, Zheng Ren, or Su Yun, they all understand the ins and outs.
Malicious, devoid of conscience!
"He hit me! He killed my son with treatment and still hit me! Everybody, judge fairly!" The man shouted crazily in the hallway.
Zheng Ren placed the child on the examination bed, his face frosty, and walked out of the consultation room.
He kicked the man in the face with such force that blood spurted out.
"Damn it!"
