Chapter 683: 673 Fireworks Flickering Uncertainly in the Dark (Alliance Leader lunar_coco Bonus Chapter 3)
There's no need to be polite now.
Zheng Ren made no effort to hide his tears, rubbing them dry hard with his sleeve, then he pried open the vent window and slipped out.
The outside air was much better; the rain had stopped, carrying a fresh vigor.
He took a deep breath of fresh air, Zheng Ren gazed at the distant, pitch-black horizon, slightly raised his hand, and made a punching motion.
Some people, some things, are never forgotten and will never be forgotten.
"Chief Zheng, are you alright?" Zhao Yunlong appeared beside him and asked.
At this moment, his way of addressing Zheng Ren reverted back to the original "Chief Zheng".
"I'm fine." Zheng Ren grinned, laughed briefly, "The wounded underwent successful surgery; send them to the rear, as long as they get a transfusion they'll survive. For now, give them as much fluid as possible, their condition will improve."
Speaking, Zheng Ren suddenly noticed a bruise on Zhao Yunlong's face and his mouth swollen, and asked puzzledly, "Did the aftershock accidentally hit you?"
Zhao Yunlong noticed Zheng Ren's gaze, felt a bit angry, and cursed fiercely: "That mad dog Su Yun went crazy and got beaten by him."
""
"It took four soldiers from a reconnaissance company to hold him down. He's still a top hand in the army; ordinary people really can't handle him." Zhao Yunlong said.
"Where is he? Take me to see." Zheng Ren said.
"Where's the smoking area?" Zhao Yunlong was visibly angry; perhaps Su Yun had threatened something, and he didn't want to meet face‑to‑face, pointing to the dark patch of ground in the distance and said.
That side was pitch‑black, no silhouettes visible, only a flickering point of fire.
Zheng Ren immediately strode over.
Su Yun sat on a rock, with two soldiers keeping watch not far away.
"Are you crazy?" Zheng Ren asked.
"Idiot." Su Yun replied listlessly, his black hair sticking to his forehead, lacking energy.
"Give me one."
Su Yun didn't know who he'd gotten the cigarette from; he shook his hand, a cigarette popped out of the pack, and he tossed it to Zheng Ren.
After lighting it, Zheng Ren took a deep drag, sat beside Su Yun without speaking, merely staring at the dark, distant sky, wondering what he was thinking.
Silence, the fire flickered on and off.
After a long silence, Su Yun suddenly said, "If there's a next time, I won't listen to whatever you say; I'll definitely go down together."
"No need." Zheng Ren knew Su Yun couldn't hold back this habit, gave a slight smile, and replied.
Facing each other without speaking, I don't mind, but Su Yun definitely can't stand it.
"If you're capable, watch from outside." Having said that, Su Yun took a fierce drag on his cigarette, and the starlight flared up.
"My skill is higher; I can play a bigger role going in. If you went, you'd probably not finish even by the next aftershock." Zheng Ren spoke frankly.
Such a sharp retort left Su Yun feeling a tightness in his chest, a needle‑like pain in the front chest area, as if he had a myocardial infarction.
Su Yun wanted to retort, but what could he say? Perform a heart transplant? He had a premonition that if he relied on his strongest technique to argue, he might end up being slapped in the face when he returned.
MD, really holding back anger.
"Next time, don't get worked up, just wait for me outside." Zheng Ren said: "You're pretty good at fighting, huh?"
"Guys like Zhao Yunlong are just embroidered pillows—look sturdy but topple at a touch; I could take on five of them." Su Yun said resentfully.
All his pent‑up frustration was vented onto Zhao Yunlong.
"After training, it's just different."
"Young master, I can learn anything after seeing it twice."
"Impressive."
The topic was killed off by Zheng Ren, and they fell silent thereafter.
After a long while, Su Yun finally asked, "We leave at dawn? Coincidentally, there's a batch of patients that need to be sent to the rear. The helicopter can't carry that many, so we'll have to carry them back on foot."
"Mm, we'll go together." Zheng Ren said, "Here, even with all my skills I can only exert about thirty percent."
"I've never seen you so narcissistic." Su Yun said disdainfully.
"Speaking frankly." Zheng Ren said: "In general and thoracic surgery I'm just at the level of an ordinary team‑leading professor; maybe I'm a bit better at tough cases? But for interventional surgery I'm absolutely world‑top; there's no need to be modest. If I were modest, would anyone else still dare to practice medicine?"
""
Honestly, it's really unpleasant to hear; won't this guy ever be a little modest?
Just that when he tries to be modest, even his smile looks awkward.
Su Yun didn't look at Zheng Ren; instead he gazed at the eastern sky.
"Take a break, don't just sit here waiting eagerly for dawn." Zheng Ren said.
"Not tired, just wondering if the rear is swamped with work." Su Yun whispered.
"The front line isn't easy, nor is the rear." Zheng Ren said: "In this area alone I estimate the number of surgeries could easily exceed a hundred thousand."
Roughly the same as Su Yun's estimate; if we finish quickly, everyone—including the local doctors of Rongcheng plus the newcomers—will be worked to the point of vomiting blood.
This campaign has only just begun.
Zheng Ren had already prepared himself for the impending storm, not starting from tomorrow. Ever since he set foot on this land, this struggle has never ceased.
After sitting for less than twenty minutes, catching his breath, Zheng Ren and Su Yun then joined the rescue efforts together.
More and more survivors were pulled from the ruins, filling the town square. Zheng Ren no longer hid his feelings; as he walked by, he treated what could be treated, assessed the urgency of what couldn't, and then decided whether to evacuate by helicopter or to trek over the mountain road to Pengxi Xiang ahead.
Zheng Ren was very careful; for each critical patient transferred, he wrote out a clear diagnosis and recommended treatment plan.
At this point he no longer bothered to conceal anything; he had no mind for it.
Perhaps if they set out at dawn and took the mountain road, a mudslide could strike, leaving both him and the Big Pig Trotter doomed.
Well, he himself would surely perish, but the Big Pig Trotter might not.
Moreover, when lives are at stake, hiding things serves no purpose.
He wrote out the diagnoses for over a hundred patients in one go, and only then did this phase come to an end.
Zhao Yunlong looked at Zheng Ren with a complex expression; he had examined all those diagnoses, and compared to Zheng Ren's, his own was simply fucking garbage.
In his mind appeared a little figure, like Su Yun standing there, speaking sarcastically: "Chief Zhao, you, you can also see patients?"
He really wanted to ask Zheng Ren just how he made his diagnosis.
At first he was doubtful, but after seeing a few patients, Zhao Yunlong noticed that the thoracic department's diagnosis was similar to his own judgment, yet deeper by a few degrees, and he immediately knelt down.
If he could make it back alive, he would definitely seek proper advice from Chief Zheng; Zhao Yunlong planted a seed in his heart.
Being able to participate in the Nobel Prize review is certainly no empty boast.
There is still a gap; just keep striving to catch up.
After dawn, several wounded who were serious enough but not enough to merit a helicopter were placed on stretchers and tied down. Each stretcher was carried by four Faction soldiers; Zheng Ren and Su Yun were responsible for handling emergencies as they rushed all the way to Pengxi Xiang.
