Chapter 71

~7 min read 1,326 words

In the afternoon there wasn't much going on; the patients were all stable. Zheng Ren was reading a book, and after Chang Yue finished writing the case notes she wandered from ward to ward, chatting with patients and their families.

The Chu Family Sisters and Xie Yiren were in the operating room, nostalgic for the day they'd performed 49 appendectomies. Chu Yan zhi wanted to burn calories but had nowhere to do it—she couldn't possibly tidy Zheng Ren up and toss him onto the operating table to have him operated on, could she?

Zheng Ren had already forgotten about receiving a huge amount of experience points; he sat quietly in the office reading, waiting for the emergency department to have a corresponding patient, then he'd call himself down to make a clear diagnosis.

Around three in the afternoon, a series of footsteps echoed down the Jizhenbingfang ward corridor.

Zheng Renye didn't pay it much mind, perhaps it was just a patient's relatives or friends coming to visit.

The Jizhenbingfang could not implement fully closed management, after all, if it were fully closed each patient would need more than 1.4 nurses.

Nowadays, not even assigning 1.4 nurses per patient—Director Pan had scoured the whole hospital and barely managed to staff the Jizhenbingfang with nurses.

So, let those who should enter enter and those who should exit exit; these things are just the higher-ups making up ideas on the spot and the lower levels coping with them. If anyone actually took them seriously, they'd lose.

"Doctor Zheng, hello."

A knocking came from the door of the doctors' office; several people stood there, the person in front wearing a black hoodie and large sunglasses, looking like a star.

"Who is this person?" Zheng Ren stared for a moment.

Looking at that person's appearance…… Zheng Ren's mind went blank; he had no impression at all.

"I'm Zhou Jinxi, Doctor Zheng—do you still remember me?" The person took off the sunglasses, revealing a sweet smile.

Zhou Jinxi seemed to be the patient who had undergone a laparoscopic transanal reverse resection of the appendix. The name rang a bell, and so did the case, but Zheng Ren simply couldn't match the sweet‑smiling girl before him with that memory.

He shook his head.

The atmosphere instantly turned awkward.

"Doctor Zheng, hello." Someone stepped out from behind Zhou Jinxi, wearing a professional smile, calm and elegant, saying, "I gave you my business card—do you still remember?"

"I don't remember." Zheng Ren scratched his head, having completely forgotten the business card that the agent had handed him with both hands in the laparoscopy corridor, and the promise to entertain him in Modu someday.

"Doctor Zheng, important people tend to forget things." The agent's smile stiffened a bit but remained composed, "Miss Zhou won the championship in the modeling competition; tonight's flight back to Modu, she came especially to thank Doctor Zheng."

"Oh oh, please have a seat." Only then did Zheng Ren utter a proper sentence.

Zhou Jinxi wore a pair of jeans; her thighs were slim but her curves were ample, every movement bursting with surprising elasticity.

Watching the fairy‑like Zhou Jinxi walk in, Zheng Ren felt no inner turbulence and casually asked, "How's the recovery?"

"Pretty good." Zhou Jinxi smiled, "She got out of bed the first day, started on liquids the second, and entered the competition the third. Sister Wu had worried the stitches might tear, but nothing happened at all. Doctor Zheng, your skill is truly high!"

Saying that, Zhou Jinxi gave a thumbs‑up to Zheng Ren.

Her hand, carved like white jade, emitted a warm, moist sheen.

Zheng Ren checked the System Panel again; Zhou Jinxi had indeed fully recovered, with no risk whatsoever.

"Chief Zheng, little sister wants to ask you when her father can be discharged." While they were chatting, Chang Yue squeezed through the crowd and asked.

That young girl, seeing many people inside, looked especially nervous and didn't dare follow Chang Yue in.

Zhou Jinxi's agent let out a "Huh," as if noticing something. She sprang to her feet and strode straight to the girl, looking down at her from above.

She wasn't taller than the girl, but her presence was overwhelming, utterly looking down from above.

The girl felt guilty under her gaze and timidly asked, "What are you looking at me for?"

"How old are you?" the agent asked.

"17."

"Are you still in school, or are you working?"

"I was planning to work, but my father fell ill and I'm caring for him. Once he returns to our hometown, I'll look for a job." The girl said this while her head gradually lowered, seeming somewhat shy and inferior.

Seeing the agent's overbearing attitude, Chang Yue turned, stepped between the girl and the agent, took the girl's hand, and walked inside.

"Chief Zheng, little sister wants to ask you when her father can be discharged."

"About three days; if you're not in a hurry you can wait a week, have the stitches removed and then go back. If you are in a hurry, you can go back and have any township health clinic remove the stitches." Zheng Ren answered without hesitation.

If absorbable sutures had been used, Zheng Ren might worry about the wound bursting after activity; but today's surgery used No. 7 triangular needle thread, which is extremely sturdy, and Zheng Ren expressed full confidence in it.

"Did you hear that, little sister?" Chang Yue said: "Don't worry too much—Chief Zheng may be a bit ugly, but his surgical skill is top‑notch. He said it's fine, so your father will definitely be fine."

Zheng Ren regretted Chang Yue's description.

"Hmm." The little sister bowed deeply to Zheng Ren and then hurried away.

Zhou Jinxi's agent's eyes held a hint of amusement; seeing the little sister run off, she asked, "Doctor Zheng, is that a relative of your patient?"

"Hmm."

"What do you want to do?" Chang Yue's emotional intelligence, which is only directed at patients' families, is normally on par with Zheng Ren's.

She was wary of the agent's behavior and immediately asked.

"The company is preparing to form a girl group; seeing that the girl's figure and looks are suitable, we just wanted to ask." The agent, noticing Chang Yue's wary expression, immediately understood and smirked slightly: "You wouldn't think I'm going to sell her, would you?"

"Hmm." Chang Yue really is a blunt girl—she actually just said "hmm" outright.

"So many people beg me to sell them, I can't be bothered." The agent said arrogantly: "Opportunities to change one's life aren't that many, Doctor—are you sure you can make the decision for her?"

Chang Yue hesitated right away.

The little sister's family situation—she knew it very well. So…

Zheng Ren's phone suddenly rang, cutting off their standoff.

"Director Pan, ah, I know, I know."

"Why?"

"Okay, I'm on my way."

Zheng Ren chuckled, said a few sentences, then hung up the phone; his tone was apologetic, but his face showed a relaxed expression as he said, "ICU urgent consultation—I won't entertain you all."

"No problem, Doctor Zheng." The agent again took out a business card from her handbag, handed it to Zheng Ren with both hands, "If you have the Opportunity to go to Modu, please give me a call. This time Doctor Zheng helped me and Zhou Jinxi a great favor; if you have the Opportunity, please don't be polite at all."

Zheng Ren smiled, took the business card, and casually slipped it into his upper pocket.

Chang Yue, help me see him off; I'm going to the ICU consultation.

"There shouldn't be our Emergency Department in the hospital-wide consultation, right?" Chang Yue wondered.

"Director said, as long as it involves emergency rescue, it's related to us. I'll go and come back quickly, you wait for me to return before leaving work." After saying that, Zheng Ren threw the 1.8-meter tall beauty in the office, and without saying goodbye, left.
