Chapter 260: Fine, I’ll Withdraw the Lawsuit

~4 min read 633 words

The look in Preston Vance’s eyes, seen through his glasses, turned somber. He gazed at the mother and daughter duo desperately trying to stop him and let out a soft sigh.

"All right, I won’t go."

In the end, he gave in.

...

"Chloe, I’m so sorry. I couldn’t find a top-tier doctor." Preston Vance’s voice was filled with guilt.

Chloe Reed’s eyelashes fluttered, the last glimmer of hope in her eyes extinguished.

Gripping her phone tightly, she did her best to remain calm. "It’s okay," she said, her voice hoarse. "I’ll figure something else out."

Preston Vance wanted to say something more, but the call abruptly ended.

He couldn’t help but sigh. The memory of the pronounced tremor in Chloe Reed’s voice sent an inexplicable wave of frustration through him.

Chloe Reed stood in the hallway. There wasn’t a breeze, but she felt bone-chillingly cold, as if she’d been plunged into the depths of hell.

Just then, the sound of steady footsteps approached. As a familiar presence drew near, she closed her eyes.

A man’s even voice sounded beside her ear. "Chloe, have you made up your mind?"

Chloe Reed looked at him, her expression that of a complete stranger. "Walker Grant, you will regret this."

"I don’t think about the future." Walker Grant stared at her. "I only want right now, with us together."

"Hah..."

Chloe Reed scoffed, but her heart was filled with desolate sorrow.

She had no time left to hesitate. The countdown on her grandmother’s life had begun.

Finally, her voice raspy, she said, "Fine. I’ll drop the lawsuit."

The next second, she was pulled into an embrace.

The man’s arms were powerful, and his scent enveloped her, inescapable.

Her body went stiff, and her face, pale and drawn, remained unresponsive.

Walker Grant’s voice murmured in her ear, "The doctor is already at the hospital. As soon as the consultation is over, your grandmother can have the surgery."

Chloe Reed bit her lip hard, not saying a word for a long moment.

Walker Grant looked at her pale face, then reached out to cup her cheeks, his gaze earnest.

"Chloe, let’s start over. I won’t do anything you don’t want me to. We can go back to how we were before, okay?"

"I’m going to see my grandmother."

Chloe Reed suppressed her emotions with great effort, abruptly shoved him away, and walked toward the hospital room.

Walker Grant’s brows drew together. Seeing her back, usually so straight, now slightly stooped, his heart sank for reasons he couldn’t name.

He lowered his gaze. ’We won’t get a divorce,’ he thought. ’We’ll start over. We’ll go back to the way things were.’

’The goal has been achieved. The process doesn’t matter.’

Her grandmother was still unconscious. Chloe Reed took her hand, pressing it against her own cheek. "Grandma..." she whispered, her voice soft and trembling.

The unconscious woman didn’t respond, and Chloe could only weep in silence.

「The surgery was scheduled for two days later.」

Doctor William, the specialist Walker Grant had hired, spoke with Chloe Reed, explaining the potential risks involved in the surgery.

But he also reassured Chloe, telling her that he had experience and had performed similar surgeries before.

This eased some of Chloe Reed’s anxiety.

Standing at the end of the hallway, she dialed Miles Hawthorne’s number.

The phone rang three times before it was answered.

"Hello, Chloe."

Chloe Reed’s voice was hoarse. "Miles, I’m dropping the lawsuit."

"Why?!" Miles Hawthorne was stunned. "What happened?"

Clutching her phone, Chloe Reed told him everything that had happened in the last couple of days.

"Fuck!"

Miles Hawthorne couldn’t hold it in and cursed out loud. "Could he be any more of a bastard?! After everything that’s happened, does he really still not get that your marriage is over?"
