Chapter 298: He Took It for Her

~4 min read 643 words

Chloe Reed stood at the door of the emergency room, her hands still trembling.

Just then, Daniel Hayes called.

"Miss Reed, how are you? Are you hurt?"

"I’m not hurt." Chloe Reed took a deep breath, steadying her emotions. "What about you guys? Are you okay?"

"We’re fine, but the two of them got away." Daniel Hayes sounded very discouraged. "So brazen, using a gun in this country!"

Chloe Reed said, "Investigate them thoroughly. Find out exactly who they are."

"Okay, I will." Daniel Hayes’s tone was very serious.

This was clearly an attack aimed at Chloe Reed. He had to get to the bottom of it.

"By the way, what about Mr. Grant? How is he?" Daniel Hayes suddenly asked.

Chloe Reed’s voice was a little hoarse as she said, "He’s hurt. I don’t know how badly. He lost consciousness not long after we got in the car."

Daniel Hayes was silent for a moment, but then he said, "You’re at the hospital now, right?"

"Yes."

"As long as they treat him quickly, he’ll be fine. Miss Reed, try not to worry too much," Daniel Hayes consoled her.

Chloe Reed acknowledged him, then immediately asked, "How is my grandmother?"

"Grandma Sutton is fine. I’ve already arranged for someone to take her back to the hospital. She still doesn’t know what happened outside. Miss Reed, if you don’t want to worry Grandma Sutton, it’s best not to say anything," Daniel Hayes advised.

An elderly person like her couldn’t handle that kind of shock.

"Yes, I know."

Chloe Reed hung up the phone. She leaned against the wall as if she’d finally found something to support her, and her tense body relaxed slightly.

A short while later, Dylan Finch rushed over. He found a nurse to go inside and check on the situation.

His expression was grave as he said, "Ma’am, Mr. Grant has been investigating the person from that last incident. Unfortunately, that person is very good at hiding, and we haven’t been able to find any trace of them. Do you remember anything else?"

Chloe Reed thought for a moment, then shook her head. "It was too dark that day. I only saw that he was wearing a sanitation worker’s uniform. He said he had scratched my car. I let my guard down, and when my back was turned, he used some kind of drug to knock me out. When I woke up, I saw Walker Grant."

As Dylan Finch listened, his expression grew even more serious.

Just then, the nurse came out and said to Dylan Finch, "The bullet hit Mr. Grant’s shoulder. It barely missed piercing his lung. He’s currently in surgery."

Dylan Finch nodded. "Okay, I understand."

Hearing this, Chloe Reed thought back to the scene.

He had pulled her into his arms and spun them around.

’So, that bullet was meant for me.’

"Ma’am, you should sit for a while. Mr. Grant will definitely be okay," Dylan Finch said hurriedly when he turned and saw how pale she was.

Chloe Reed didn’t speak. She just lowered her gaze, trying hard to suppress the trembling brought on by the lingering fear.

Time passed, second by second. After what felt like an eternity, the doors to the operating room finally opened.

A nurse came out pushing a hospital bed. Walker Grant was unconscious and pale, an oxygen mask on his face.

Dylan Finch went forward to ask about his condition. "How is he?"

"We’ve removed the bullet, but he’s not out of danger yet. He needs to be moved to the ICU for observation," the doctor said gravely.

Dylan Finch nodded. "Understood."

Chloe Reed stood to the side, her gaze on the unconscious man incredibly complex. A whirlwind of emotions churned within her.

Her phone vibrated. It was a message from Daniel Hayes: Grandma was asking where she had gone.
