Chapter 360: The Grandsons' Marksmanship Is Terrible
The violent rain had just ceased, but the night sky over Wuzhou remained shrouded in dark clouds, oppressive enough to make one breathless.
Lin Dongfan, Yang Qing, Xu Yue, and two children sat around a table by the glass wall of the restaurant, the table laden with sumptuous dishes.
What should have been a joyful celebration was utterly shattered by a sudden gunshot.
"Bang!"
Lin Dongfan felt only a wave of heat graze the top of his head.
A few strands of hair floated down.
Immediately afterward, a huge blast came from the other side of the restaurant as the fish tank exploded, water spraying everywhere, and several lively groupers flopped on the floor, snapping their tails.
"Holy shit!"
Lin Dongfan turned his head, then reached up to feel his slightly cool scalp, his eyes widening in shock.
Had he just brushed past the Grim Reaper?
After a moment of stunned disbelief, Lin Dongfan quickly realized that, sure enough, being handsome attracted many enemies; next time he'd have to change venues for hot pot. This restaurant wasn't safe—you could see inside from outside.
"Someone's shooting—get down!"
Before the assassin could fire a second shot, Lin Dongfan sensibly ducked beside his chair. Xu Yue, sitting opposite, hearing the shout, also pulled the two children down with her.
"Someone's shooting!"
In a world where firearms are strictly banned, those four words are undoubtedly a terrifying signal.
The private room instantly descended into chaos; surrounding diners threw down their chopsticks and bowls, crouching frantically under the tables, too afraid to even peek out.
Nine-year-old Yuan Shuang cried out in fear, whimpering.
Xu Yue's face turned as pale as paper, her body trembling, yet she forced back her fear, clutching the two children tightly to her chest: "Don't be afraid, don't be afraid, I'm here as your teacher..."
In truth, she herself was panicking; such a terrifying scene had previously only been seen in blockbuster movies.
Yang Qing reacted the fastest.
He almost drew his sidearm from his waist the instant the gunshot rang out, crouching like a cheetah while keeping his eyes fixed on the outside of the glass wall: "Show-off, you protect Xu Yue and the kids!"
As a detective, Yang Qing clearly possessed all the keen observational skills one would expect.
He quickly deduced the bullet's flight path merely from the bullet holes in the glass wall and the position of the shattered fish tank at the restaurant's far end.
From that he further inferred the shooter's approximate location.
What met his gaze was a black business vehicle parked at the curb; the shooter must be hiding in that vehicle.
"Damn it, I just earned the provincial public security model award, and now some clueless fool pops up to hand me merit— isn't this forcing me to improve?"
Yang Qing excitedly leapt to the restaurant doorway, raised his gun, and aimed at the black business vehicle at the curb.
He was about to fire, intending to blow out the tires.
To prevent the enemy from driving away from the scene.
"Bang!"
The other side fired first, startling Yang Qing into covering his head and ducking back into the shop.
"How… how did this happen?" Xu Yue gazed at Yang Qing, who had almost been shot, worry flashing across her face; she never imagined that a detective's daily life meant risking life and limb even over a meal.
Lin Dongfan pondered, then explained to Xu Yue: "It's obvious this is a vicious revenge attack; someone wants us dead. I suspect the culprit is Lu Han of the Han Chao Group. The Lu family failed to obtain those eight pieces of golden-thread nanmu from Wushi Village, and they lost a brother. They certainly can't swallow this grudge."
"Sorry, Big Brother Lin, we've dragged you into this."
Xu Yue wore a look of shame; she had thought the disputes in the village were already settled, never expecting that deadly retaliation had only just begun.
Lin Dongfan smiled faintly: "Don't talk nonsense; fighting corruption and cracking down on crime is my and Yang Qing's duty."
As he spoke, Yang Qing slipped back, hunched over.
Yang Qing glumly told Lin Dongfan: "I messed up—outside there are two sniper points. One assassin is lurking to the left of the main door, another to the right. We probably need to call for backup..."
"Bang bang bang bang!"
Before Yang Qing could finish, a deafening volley of gunfire rang out again.
Four shots in succession!
The dishes and glasses on the table were shattered, scattering like fragments.
Xu Yue, crouched beside the table, was so frightened she dared not open her eyes, clutching the two children tightly, terrified they'd peek out and get hit.
Lin Dongfan, accustomed to big scenes, remained calm.
Lin Dongfan brushed off a cumin‑flavored lamb chop that had fallen onto his head, then calmly analyzed for Yang Qing: "By the time reinforcements arrive, the daylilies will be cold. The other side aren't idiots; they won't just wait here to be caught. They could burst in at any moment and spray bullets— with so many people in the shop, we mustn't implicate innocents."
"What do you suggest?" Yang Qing said, a headache forming.
Lin Dongfan furrowed his brows: "They're after me; as long as I leave this place, they'll follow and try to kill me."
"Lure them out of the bustling city?" Yang Qing questioned.
Lin Dongfan replied: "Nonsense—this place is crowded; you can't trade firepower with them here. We must draw them to a remote spot."
"I fully agree with your view, so I didn't fire back here." Yang Qing said worriedly: "The problem is how we get out of here—the entrance is completely covered by them; not even a fly could escape."
"The back kitchen surely has a door; we'll withdraw via the back door." Lin Dongfan instructed Yang Qing: "I'll take Xu Yue and the two children and pull back first; you cover the rear."
"Okay, you go first." Yang Qing gripped his pistol tightly, warily watching the entrance for any sign of the assailants rushing in: "If anything happens to my Teacher Xu, you'll bear full responsibility and compensate me with a Teacher Xu."
Upon hearing that, Lin Dongfan slapped Yang Qing on the head: "Get lost—I'll cover the rear, you pull back first, drive the car to the back door and wait for me."
"That's what you yourself said—don't accuse me of favoring lust over friendship."
Yang Qing chuckled smugly, turned, and spread his broad arms like a hen shielding her chicks, guarding Xu Yue and the two children from behind as they retreated through the back door.
Almost at the same moment, another gunshot rang out.
The chandeliers in the restaurant were all shattered.
Terrified, Yang Qing and the others felt their hearts leap into their throats; as they ran forward, their souls lagged behind, and they could only pray to their ancestors for protection, hoping desperately not to bring about the extinction of their line.
Lin Dongfan quietly edged over to the cashier's counter.
He asked the terrified female cashier, whose soul had fled her body: "Beautiful lady, a few days ago when your store opened, is the loudspeaker you used to drum up business still here?"
Here.
The cashier squatted under the counter, not daring to show her head, and reached out to place the loudspeaker on the counter,
Thank you.
Lin Dongfan opened the loudspeaker.
Having timed it, expecting Yang Qing to have already opened the car's back door, he picked up the loudspeaker and shouted outward: "Out there, you little trash who want to kill me, listen up, old man! I am your nemesis, Lin Dongfan! Now I'm about to flee out the back door—if you've got the guts, come chase me; if you don't dare, you're grandsons!"
Bang!
Just as his words fell, a bullet shot in from outside the door, shattering the cash register display on the counter.
The girl hiding under the cashier counter screamed in fright.
"What terrible shooting—this big guy standing here can't even be hit, go die!" Lin Dongfan shouted while running, holding the loudspeaker.
His heart rate and breathing rhythm were indeed absurdly fast.
But it was really exhilarating.
At the moment he burst out the back door, seeing Yang Qing already had the car door open waiting for him, Lin Dongfan was absolutely certain of one thing—tonight he could wildly push the Lu Han family's crystal tower!
