Chapter 879: Despairing Discard
Huang Jintang stared at the incoming call display on his phone screen—City Bureau 002—and his scalp went numb.
"Answer." Gao Yicheng handed the phone to Huang Jintang, then warned further: "Remember what I just told you—don't play tricks!"
Under this high-pressure situation, Huang Jintang instinctively struggled a bit with his handcuffed hands.
The struggling was utterly useless.
Gao Yicheng had already pressed the answer button, turned on the speaker, and held the phone to his ear. Meanwhile, the law‑enforcement recorder placed beside him was also recording everything on the scene.
From the phone came Zheng Political Commissar's scolding: "Director Huang, what are you up to? Taking so long to answer the call. Is Captain Gao at the scene? Have him call me back."
Huang Jintang glanced at Gao Yicheng beside him.
Gao Yicheng first made a shushing gesture, then waved to summon the clerk responsible for taking notes, and had him take the phone.
Gao Yicheng quickly wrote a sentence on a piece of paper.
He gestured for Huang Jintang to read it aloud.
Huang Jintang took a close look, then replied glumly: "He's fishing his phone out of the toilet."
"His phone fell into the toilet? No wonder I couldn't get through." Zheng Political Commissar asked again: "What's the situation on your end now?"
Huang Jintang glanced at Gao Yicheng again.
Seeing Gao Yicheng hold up another sheet of paper with three characters—"You're the best!"—
Huang Jintang couldn't help but chuckle, but as he laughed his brows furrowed glumly: "Don't worry, nothing's happening on my end; everything's under my control."
Zheng Political Commissar asked again: "Who was responsible for beating up Ye Jiaying's younger brother?"
This time Huang Jintang didn't look at Gao Yicheng's cue card, and replied directly: "A clueless underling did it—whoever hurt him bears the responsibility; it's got nothing to do with me."
"Then that's fine."
Zheng Political Commissar paused for a moment.
He then instructed Huang Jintang: "Remember, under no circumstances let Lin Dongfan catch you with any leverage. Don't say I didn't warn you beforehand—if you get taken in, no one can save you."
"!!!"
Huang Jintang broke out in a black line; if he hadn't been arrested, hearing this would just make him laugh it off—but the problem is, he really has been arrested.
In silence, it felt as if ten thousand mythical alpacas were galloping through his heart!
This time Gao Yicheng's cue for him read—"I understand!"
Just two simple characters.
But Huang Jintang couldn't suppress the fury of those ten thousand alpacas in his chest, and he blurted out: "You surnamed Zheng, what the hell do you mean? When you need us, you…"
He hadn't finished speaking when the clerk hung up the phone.
The clerk admonished: "Huang Jintang, how did Captain Gao just tell you? He said don't play tricks! What nonsense did you just spout?!"
"Damn it!" Huang Jintang's face flushed red: "These damn bastards who burn the bridge after crossing it—aren't I even allowed to curse a couple of times?"
"You should curse."
Gao Yicheng, however, laughed and pulled a cigarette from his pocket, first offering it to Huang Jintang's mouth, then lighting it for him.
Huang Jintang first took a strong drag.
After inhaling, he felt a bit startled, then belatedly realized—Gao Yicheng is also a damn bastard, so how could this damn bastard be so righteous?
Huang Jintang questioned: "You give me a cigarette—what the hell does that mean?"
"I sympathize deeply with your miserable plight." Gao Yicheng sat down opposite him, smiling as he looked at Huang Jintang: "Now no one can protect you—you know what to do, right? Look at those eight characters on the wall: Leniency for confession, severity for resistance. This is no joke; think it over before answering me."
"What the hell do you want me to answer?" Huang Jintang said: "I already made it clear earlier—whoever hurt someone, you go interrogate that person; it's none of my business."
"Back then, you were the one who first kicked Ye Jiayan in the leg, right?" Gao Yicheng said: "You can refuse to answer any questions, but the evidence won't act along with your performance."
"That kick of mine didn't cause him any injury. His bloody head has nothing to do with me—someone else beat him, and afterward I didn't hit him."
Huang Jintang obviously knows nothing about the law, yet he continues to argue with full confidence.
Gao Yicheng stood up and took the cigarette from Huang Jintang's mouth; Huang Jintang immediately widened his eyes: "You damn well let me smoke just now, and now you're snatching it back—are you messing with me?!"
"Sorry, I thought you were a sensible person, but I didn't realize you're still unenlightened." Gao Yicheng tempted him with the cigarette: "If you want to smoke, go ahead—but first open up a bit so I can see."
"I'll open your mother's enlightenment!"
Huang Jintang grinned and swore: "It's just one cigarette—I won't die if I don't smoke it, damn it! You think one cigarette can control me? My life isn't that cheap!"
"Not smoking really won't kill anyone." Gao Yicheng said: "But I have plenty of time to gather your criminal evidence. When the time comes, whether the court sentences you to death depends on how tough your life is."
As soon as collecting criminal evidence was mentioned, Huang Jintang immediately went mute.
Recalling Zheng Political Commissar's words on the phone just now—"If you get taken in, no one can save you!"—
Huang Jintang's heart turned to dead ash.
Over these years, the reason Huang Jintang has been able to thrive in Wuzhou is that he's clung to two big trees!
In business he can rely on the Zhao Group; for power matters he can lean on the City Bureau's 002.
The Zhao Group has collapsed, and now the City Bureau's 002 is putting on an act of abandoning the ally after crossing the river.
Right now those two big trees can no longer be leaned on; for this rough road ahead, who else can we hope to lend a hand? It seems we can only rely on ourselves.
Thinking of this, Huang Jintang glanced at the eight large characters on the wall—Leniency for confession, severity for resistance!
His feelings were a mixed bag.
Having lost protection, how is he supposed to deal with these damn bastards?
If Gao Yicheng really wanted to take down Huang Jintang, he has plenty of methods! In this high‑tech era, there's no case that can't be solved—only these damn bastards who don't want to solve them.
The more he thought, the heavier Huang Jintang's mood became.
His whole person resembled a frost‑beaten eggplant—his former arrogance had vanished completely, leaving only a sorrowful face, desperate eyes, and a drooping head.
Gao Yicheng suddenly asked again: "Have you figured it out?"
"I've figured it out." Huang Jintang lifted his head to look at Gao Yicheng: "But before I answer any questions, I have one condition—I need to see Mayor Lin in person and talk to him face to face."
"You think Mayor Lin is your own big brother, that you can see him whenever you want?"
Gao Yicheng wore a solemn expression: "Don't be so pretentious as a person. If you actively confess the issue, I can apply to have you protected on the grounds that the case is serious. If you don't confess, tonight they'll send you to the detention center. By then your safety will be out of my control—will you even survive until tomorrow? Think for yourself."
!!!
Huang Jintang furrowed his worried brows, silent for Along while.
Having mingled in society for so many years, he now counts as someone who's been through it all, and naturally he's heard this heart‑wrenching social truth—the more you know, the faster you die!
Gao Yicheng raised his wrist to check the time.
He reminded him, "Everyone's already written you off as a discard, why are you still hung up on it? You don't have much time left—be quick about it, don't hold me up from going home to coax my daughter."
