Chapter 56: Ambush? The wisdom of Kobolds!

~6 min read 1,097 words

Fifty kilometers away from Vanguard Valley.

On the vast wasteland, a huge army was densely gathered.

The main body of this army was Kobolds—short, hunched over, with gray-green skin, long snouts, and sharp teeth.

Their numbers were astonishing; looking at them, they seemed endless.

This Kobold army of over five thousand was led by a Kobold commander who was exceptionally tall, wearing tattered leather armor, and holding a serrated greatsword.

His eyes flickered with cunning light, and unlike the barbarism and fanaticism of other Kobolds, he appeared exceptionally calm.

He was Kaersasi.

A Kobold who had been temporarily pushed to the position of commander during the great unrest.

Beside him stood several Kobolds who were slightly smaller but also poorly equipped; they were the tribal chiefs.

"Commander Kaersasi!"

A Kobold chief named Geluomu had a fanatical expression on his face.

"When are we attacking that damn human territory?"

"We can't wait to tear those humans apart and grab their wealth and women!"

Another chief, named Sika, was equally impatient.

"That's right! Kaersasi!"

"The great Orc Kingdom has issued an order!"

"This time, we want to let humans know who the master of this land is!"

Kaersasi coldly swept a glance at these fanatical chiefs.

His heart was full of disdain.

These idiots didn't even know what this expedition meant.

Did they think this was going to rob a few small villages?

This was war!

A war launched by the Orc Kingdom against the human kingdom!

And their Kobold troop was nothing more than the cheapest cannon fodder in this war.

Kaersasi knew his positioning very clearly.

He was not like those chiefs who were overwhelmed by fanaticism.

His primary goal was not so-called wealth and glory, but to lead his troop to survive in this cruel war.

"Shut up!"

Kaersasi roared, his voice carrying a sense of oppression.

"Do you think humans are that easy to deal with?"

"That human territory called Vanguard Valley, being able to be developed in such a short time and rising rapidly, proves they are definitely not soft persimmons!"

He looked into the distance, in the direction of that human territory.

"Our mission is to pin down part of the human army in New Wind Province and clear obstacles for the main force of the Orc Kingdom."

"As for conquering cities and seizing land, that's not something cannon fodder like us should think about."

Geluomu and Sika were choked by Kaersasi's tone, but they didn't dare to refute.

After all, Kaersasi was a powerhouse at the Great Warrior Peak realm, comparable to the Great Knight Peak realm among humans, with strength far exceeding these ordinary Kobold chiefs.

"Commander Kaersasi, when do we act?"

Sika asked cautiously.

Kaersasi looked up at the sky.

"Rest well tonight."

"Tomorrow morning, we set off."

"Remember, don't disperse, and don't be attracted by those scattered human units."

"Our target is only that castle in Vanguard Valley!"

He calculated in his heart.

If that castle could be easily taken, that would naturally be a good thing.

If it couldn't be taken...

He wouldn't let his troop die in vain.

He would look for an opportunity to bypass that hard bone and continue to advance into the human hinterland.

Early the next morning, the first ray of sunlight just pierced the horizon.

Kaersasi led the vast Kobold army and stepped onto the road to Vanguard Valley.

The wasteland trembled under the dense footsteps of the Kobolds.

The air was filled with a fishy and dusty smell.

During the march, Kaersasi keenly sensed some abnormalities.

"Stop!"

He suddenly raised his hand, and the entire Kobold army stopped immediately.

"Commander, what's wrong?"

Geluomu stepped forward and asked.

Kaersasi didn't answer him.

His gaze scanned the front.

Not far from Vanguard Valley, there was a small human village.

But now, that location appeared exceptionally quiet.

No cooking smoke, no human figures, not even the calls of livestock.

Too quiet.

Quiet to the point of being eerie.

Kaersasi's cunning eyes narrowed slightly.

"That village is not right."

He said in a low voice.

"If humans knew we were coming, they would definitely evacuate the residents in the village."

"And they would leave a unit there to set an ambush!"

Geluomu and Sika looked at each other; they hadn't thought of so much.

Kaersasi sneered.

"Those human nobles love to play these little tricks the most."

"Do they think we Kobolds are all brainless idiots?"

His serrated greatsword spun in his hand.

"Pass my order!"

"Bypass that village!"

"We'll go straight to attack that castle!"

"Yes! Commander!"

The messenger Kobold ran out immediately and conveyed Kaersasi's order.

The Kobold army changed its direction of travel, bypassed the quiet village, and accelerated toward the castle of Vanguard Valley.

Vanguard Valley Castle.

Roko stood on the tall city wall, looking into the distance calmly.

Beside him stood Hart, Fura, and Martina.

Hart's expression was somewhat grave.

"Master, those Kobolds bypassed the village."

He said in a low voice.

Roko nodded.

"It seems that Kobold commander is not a simple character."

Roko had originally thought that if the Orcs attacked, that village would be a good place to set an ambush.

So he had evacuated all the residents of the village into the castle in advance and sent a squad to hide there, preparing to lure the enemy into the ambush circle.

But he didn't expect the Kobold commander to be so cautious and bypass it directly.

"Since they came directly, we'll meet them directly."

Roko's tone had no waves.

"Hart."

"Order everyone to sound the alarm gong!"

"Vanguard Valley, enter a state of war!"

"Yes! Master!"

Hart immediately took the order and left.

"Dang! Dang! Dang!"

The urgent and loud alarm gong sound instantly resounded throughout Vanguard Valley.

This sound was like a war drum, instantly igniting the tension and fighting spirit in the hearts of the territory's people.

The people in the castle, under the command of Martina, Bake, and others, quickly entered their respective posts.

Young and strong people stood on the city wall with simple weapons, while women and children were arranged in safer places.

The Knight Order and soldiers were fully armed, looking ahead with vigilance.

Fura leaned tightly against Roko, and in her heterochromatic pupils flickered firm light.

Her hand unconsciously gripped the hilt of the sword at her waist.

Martina also returned to the city wall; she hugged the ledger and stood on Roko's other side.

Although her face still carried a trace of nervousness, more of it was a determination to fight side-by-side with Roko. ===== CHAPTER 57 =====
